Summary
The purpose of this circular memorandum is to invite primary and secondary schools to
participate in the coming educational activities and events organised, co-organised or announced by
Curriculum Development Institute, Education Bureau. The educational activities and events to be
organized include Schools Speech Choir Showcase 2011/12 – Finale Performance, Applied
Learning Scholarship (2011/12 School Year), “Harvard Book Prize” Programme for Secondary 5

Schools Speech Choir Showcase 2011/12 – Finale Performance
Aims/ Objectives
This is to invite primary and secondary schools to attend the above Finale Performance.
Details
2. The Schools Speech Choir Showcase is jointly presented by the Arts Education Section of
the EDB and the InTuition Creative Learning. It is also supported by Youth.gov.hk and sponsored
by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
The aims of the Showcase are to cultivate students’ creativity and promote creative music making in
schools.
3. The Finale Performances for the primary and secondary sessions will be held in the
Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively on 25 May 2012
(Friday).
4. School heads, teachers and students are encouraged to attend the Finale Performance.
Owing to the limited number of seats, seating is allocated on a first-come-first-served basis in
accordance with the following:
i) Schools participating in the Finale Performance -40 seating each
ii) Schools not participating in the Finale Performance -10 seating each
5. Schools interested in attending the Finale Performance should complete and return the
Reply Slip at Appendix 1a by fax to 2336 8510 on or before 15 May 2012 (Tuesday).

Applied Learning Scholarship (2011/12 School Year)
Aims
This is to invite schools offering Applied Learning (ApL) courses (including Adapted ApL
courses) in the 2011/12 school year to nominate students for the captioned scholarship.
Details
2. The ‘ApL Scholarship (2011/12 School Year)’ (‘the Scholarship’) is co-organised by the
Law’s Charitable Foundation (LCF) and the Education Bureau (EDB) to show our appreciation to
students who demonstrated positive learning attitude and achieved good progress in their study of
ApL courses in the 2011/12 school year. A maximum of 550 students will be awarded for the
scholarship.
3. All schools with students taking ApL courses in the 2011/12 school year are eligible to
nominate students for the Scholarship. The maximum number of nominees from each school is set
according to the total number of Secondary 5 students enrolled in ApL courses in the 2011/12
school year (e.g. schools with less than 30 ApL students can nominate one student for the
Scholarship, while schools with 31 to 60 ApL students can nominate two students, etc.). Each
winner of the Scholarship will be awarded HK$1,000 and a certificate by the LCF.
4. To provide schools with more information about students’ learning progress in ApL
courses, EDB will send schools a report showing students’ interim results via the Communication
and Delivery System (CDS) by late June 2011. Schools may refer to the report in nominating
students for the Scholarship.
5. All schools with students taking ApL and Adapted ApL courses are encouraged to
nominate their Secondary 5 students for the Scholarship by completing the attached nomination
form (Appendix 2a). The completed form(s) should be submitted to the LCF Secretariat on or
before 5 September 2012 (Wednesday). For details, please refer to the website of LCF at
www.lawscharitable.org.hk.

Notes on Nomination:
1. This English form is translated based on the Chinese version of the document. For details of
the Applied Learning (ApL) Scholarship (2011-12 School Year), including the nomination
criteria and instructions, please refer to the Chinese version of the document. The Chinese
version shall prevail should there be any inconsistency.
2. Schools should use ‘Form H’ for their nominations. Course Providers (CPs) should use ‘Form
G’ for their nominations. ‘Form H’ and ‘Form G’ differ only in Part I. Part II to Part IV of
the two forms are the same.
3. Part I of ‘Form H’ and ‘Form G’ should be completed by the nominating School and CP
respectively. Each nominating school has to submit Part I once only for its nominations.
Each CP has to submit Part I once only for its nominations under each ApL course.
4. Part II of the form should be completed by the Nominator (either from School or CP). Part III
should be completed by the Student Nominee.
5. Student Nominees who would like to enter for the “Special Awards” should also complete Part
IV of the form, and should be willing to share their personal experiences in pursuing their
studies of ApL course(s) so as to encourage and inspire the other fellow students.

“Harvard Book Prize” Programme for Secondary 5 Students
in the 2011/12 School Year
Aims / Objectives
The purpose of this annex is to inform secondary schools of the “Harvard Book Prize”
programme and invite schools to participate.
Details
2. The “Harvard Book Prize”, administered by the Harvard Club of Hong Kong, seeks to
reach out to all local and international secondary schools in Hong Kong. The Club is prepared to
award Book Prizes, i.e. one winner and two runners-up, to each school. Schools may select their
own criteria for awarding the Prize(s) such as excellence in academic achievement, citizenship,
language skills, improvement, etc, in the 2011/12 school year.
3. School heads are encouraged to nominate and select the recipients for these prizes.
4. Details of the programme are available at the Harvard Club of Hong Kong’s website:
http://www.harvardhk.org/bookprize. Interested schools should apply via the Harvard Club of Hong
Kong’s website.
5. A Harvard Book Prize-giving Ceremony will begin registration at 6:00 pm and the
ceremony will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm on 23 May 2012 (Wednesday) at the Lecture
Theatre, 4/F., West Block, Education Bureau Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre, 19
Suffolk Road, Kowloon Tong, Kowloon.
6. Schools that wish to join the programme should register at 5:00 pm on 27 April 2012 or
before. Book Prize-winners or their school representatives must attend the Harvard Book
Prize-giving Ceremony to collect the Prize Book on stage. This year participation in the ceremony
is mandatory.

“Digichem” Video Production Competition
for Hong Kong Secondary Schools 2012
Aims / Objectives
This is to invite secondary schools to participate in the captioned competition.
Details
2. The “Digichem” Video Production Competition for Hong Kong Secondary Schools 2012 is
jointly organised by the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong
Association for Science and Mathematics Education and the Hong Kong Chemical Society. It is an
experiment-based video making competition and aims at promoting the interest of students in
learning Chemistry and developing students’ problem solving, communication and science process
skills through demonstrating and explaining interesting experiments.
3. Regulations and Application Form are set out in Appendices 4a and 4b.
4. Secondary schools interested in nominating their students to participate in the captioned
competition are requested to complete the Application Form and return it together with the report of
the video by post to the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau, Room E232, 2/F, East
Block, EDB Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre, 19 Suffolk Road, Kowloon. The deadline
for the entry submission is 8 June 2012 (Friday). Late submission is not accepted.

Appendix 4a
“ Digichem” Video Production Competition
for Hong Kong Secondary Schools 2012
Regulations
1. Aims
The competition aims at:
- promoting students’ interest in learning Chemistry;
- developing students’ problem solving, communication and science process skills through
demonstrating and explaining interesting experiments; and
- encouraging students to communicate scientific ideas to the public in a meaningful and creative
way.
2. Participants’ Qualification
Participant must be a secondary student of a whole-day school.
3. Requirement of entry
(a) Theme:
- Experimental Home Chemistry
(b) Video:
- The duration of the video is 1 to 2 minutes.
- The chemistry experimental work should be conducted in the school laboratory using
materials obtained at home or any daily products. Risk assessment should be conducted
before starting the experiment. Supervision from the teacher should be provided when
the students carrying out the experiments.
- The content could be presented in either Cantonese or English. Mixed-code is not
accepted.
- The video should be uploaded on YouTube (URL: www.youtube.com) before submitting
the Application Form and the report.
(c) Report:
- The video should be accompanied by a report including the experimental principle and the
safety-related aspects for the experiment. The coverage of the report should not exceed
two single sided A4 papers. The idea can be illustrated by texts, diagrams or photos, etc.
- A cover page with the title of the video, school name and full names of the students in both
Chinese and English should also be included.
- The language used in the report should be consistent with that used in the video.
4. Rules
(a) The competition consists of Junior Secondary Division and Senior Secondary Division:
1. Junior Secondary Division: Students of S1 to S3.
2. Senior Secondary Division: Students of S4 or above.
(b) Teams, comprising not more than three students in a team, must be nominated by schools.
Each school can nominate a maximum of two teams and each team can only submit one entry.
A team who submits more than one entry will be disqualified.
(c) Each entry should include a video and a report.
(d) Entries must be the participants’ original work that have not been published previously, nor
submitted for other competitions.
(e) Entries must not infringe any intellectual property rights or any other rights of any third party.
5. Submission of Entries
The report(s) for the video(s) should be submitted together with the attached Application Form via
schools by post to “Science Education Section, Room 232, 2/F, East Block, EDB Kowloon Tong
Education Services Centre, 19 Suffolk Road, Kowloon”. Please mark clearly on the envelope
“Digichem”. The deadline for the entry submission is 8 June 2012 (the postal chop date will be the
date of receipt).
6. Judging
(a) The judging panel for the competition will comprise representatives from the Education Bureau,
the Hong Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education and the Hong Kong
Chemical Society.
(b) Entries will be marked according to the following criteria:
- How the experiment and the report are presented and elaborated;
- Whether the idea of experiment is creative; and
- Whether the entry is interesting, original, scientifically accurate and engaging to ordinary
audience.
7. Awards
(a) The competition consists of the following awards for each junior secondary and senior secondary
levels:
- One Champion : One trophy and book coupons worth HK $1,500
- One first runner-up : One trophy and book coupons worth HK $1,000
- One second runner-up : One trophy and book coupons worth HK $500
- Five merit awards : One award certificate and book coupons worth HK $100 each
(b) All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
(c) Winners will be notified of the competition results before mid July 2012, and be invited to
receive their awards in a prize-giving ceremony, details of which will be given in due course.
8. Copyright
All entries will not be returned and will become the property of EDB. EDB will have the right to
use the videos and reports.

“Scientific Investigation” Poster Design Competition
Aims / Objectives
This is to invite secondary schools to participate in the captioned competition.
Details
2. The “Scientific Investigation” Poster Design Competition is jointly organised by the Science
Education Section of the Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Association for Science and
Mathematics Education. The competition aims at arousing students’ curiosity and creativity, as
well as their interest in science through designing a poster on scientific investigation.
3. Regulations and Application Form are set out in Appendix 5a and 5b.
4. Secondary schools interested in nominating their students to participate in the captioned
competition are requested to complete the Application Form and return it together with the
entry/entries by post or by hand to the Science Education Section of the Education Bureau, Room
E232, 2/F, East Block, EDB Kowloon Tong Education Services Centre, 19 Suffolk Road, Kowloon.
The deadline for the entry submission by post is 8 June 2012. The period for the entry submission

“Scientific Investigation” Poster Design Competition
Regulations
1. Aims
The competition aims at arousing students’ curiosity and creativity, as well as their interest in science
through designing a poster on scientific investigation.
2. Participants’ Qualification
Participant must be a secondary student of a whole-day school.
3. Requirement of Poster
(a) Size: A2 (420 mm 594 mm)
(b) Design:
- Participants are required to take a creative approach to identify topics or questions of
everyday context for scientific investigation and to express the innovative theme for the
investigation through poster design. Participants should consider the feasibility of the
scientific investigation. However, it is not necessary for the participants to conduct the
actual investigation.
- Participants may use drawings (e.g. cartoon, flow diagram, etc.) or photographs to express
the theme of and/or ideas for scientific investigation. The design should be
2-dimensional and suitable for mass printing.
- The titles or captions should be in either Chinese or English.
4. Rules
(a) Entries will be classified into junior secondary (S1 – 3) and senior secondary (S4 or above)
levels.
(b) Each participant may submit only one entry via the school. A participant who submits more
than one entry will be disqualified.
(c) On the back of each entry, a label must be attached with the following information: (1) the
name of participant in English and Chinese, (2) class and class number of the participant, (3)
school name, and (4) name of teacher and his/her contact telephone number.
(d) Entries must be the participants’ original work that have not been published previously, nor
submitted for other competitions.
(e) Entries must not infringe any intellectual property rights or any other rights of any third party.
5. Submission of Entries
Entries should be submitted together with the attached Application Form via schools, either by hand
or by post, to “Science Education Section, Room E232, 2/F, East Block, EDB Kowloon Tong
Education Services Centre, 19 Suffolk Road, Kowloon” (for entries by post, the postal chop date will
be the date of receipt). Please mark clearly on the envelope ‘“Scientific Investigation” Poster
Design Competition’. The deadline for the entry submission by post is 8 June 2012. The period
for the entry submission by hand will be from 6 to 8 June 2012, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
to 5:00 p.m. Late submission is not accepted.
6. Judging
(a) The judging panel for the competition will comprise member(s) of the Curriculum
Development Council Committee on Science Education, and representatives from the Hong
Kong Association for Science and Mathematics Education and the Education Bureau.
(b) Entries will be marked according to the following criteria:
- Whether the idea of the scientific investigation is creative.
- Relevance of the theme to daily life and practicality of the proposed investigation.
- Feasibility of the scientific investigation.
- Participant’s understanding of science knowledge and the application of science.
- Whether the entry is visually pleasing and interesting.
7. Awards
(a) The competition consists of the following awards for each of the junior secondary and senior
secondary levels:
- One Champion : One trophy and book coupons worth HK$1,500
- One first runner-up : One trophy and book coupons worth HK$1,000
- One second runner-up : One trophy and book coupons worth HK$500
- Five merit awards : One award certificate and book coupons worth HK$100 each
(b) All participants will receive a certificate of participation.
(c) Winners will be notified of the competition results before mid July 2012, and be invited to
receive their awards in a prize-giving ceremony, details of which will be given in due course.
(d) The EDB may consider printing and disseminating the winning entries to secondary schools.
8. Copyright
All entries will not be returned and will become the property of EDB and EDB will have the right
to use the posters.

Aims / Objectives
This is to invite secondary schools to participate in the Initial Judging cum Exhibition and
the Final Judging cum Award Presentation Ceremony of the captioned competition.
Details
2. Hong Kong Student Science Project Competition 2012 is jointly organised by the
Innovation and Technology Commission, The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, the
Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Science Museum. It aims to promote the interest of our
youth in science and technology, to develop their creativity through better understanding and
innovative application of science and technology, and to inspire their intellectual and career interest
in science and technology.
3. “From Theory to Practice Develop Science Potential” is the theme of the 2012
competition, which is the fourteenth of its series. The competition has received 220 entries by
students this year, under two divisions, the Junior Division (S1-3) and the Senior Division (S4-7) and
under the categories, Inventions and Investigations of Scientific Phenomena or Applications of
Scientific Theories.
4. The Initial Judging cum Project Exhibition will be held on 12 May 2012 (Saturday) at
Lakeside 2 of the Hong Kong Science Park from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Final Judging cum
Award Presentation Ceremony will be held on 2 June 2012 (Saturday) at Charles K. Kao Auditorium
and Conference Hall 04-07 of Lakeside 2 of the Hong Kong Science Park from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Both events are open to the public, teachers and students of all schools are invited to participate.
There will be a “Best Participation Award” for the school with the most participation in the Initial
Judging.

“Visit to Riding School and Pony Ride” 2012
Aims / Objectives
This is to invite primary and secondary schools to organise visit to riding school and pony
ride activities for helping students to strengthen their understanding and interest in Equestrian Sport.
Details
2. The Hong Kong Equestrian Federation (HKEF), with the subvention from the Leisure and
Cultural Services Department, invites primary and secondary schools to visit the Tuen Mun Public
Riding School (Address: 45 Lung Mun Road, Tuen Mun, New Territories). The participants will
watch a video on “Understanding Equestrian Sports”, walk through the stables and horse riding
arena, and gain the experience of riding on Shetland ponies.
3. Each visit may accommodate 35 to 40 students with 2 accompanying teacher(s) or school
appointed person(s). Priority will be given to schools that have not participated in similar
activities organised by the HKEF; all other applications will be processed on a first-come-first-serve
basis. The HKEF will provide free transportation service connecting the venue and the
participating school campus. Further details are available at the HKEF website
(http://www.hkef.org).
4. Schools interested in applying for the visit may complete the application form in Appendix
7a and return it to the HKEF on or before 23 April, 2012 by fax (Fax No.: 2966 5082) or by post
(Address: Hong Kong Equestrian Federation, 6/F., Central Complex, HKJC Shatin Race Course,
Shatin, Hong Kong). The HKEF will inform applicants of the accepted time slot and related
arrangement in writing or by phone on or before 26 April, 2012. Schools that are not contacted by
30 April, 2012 should deem their applications unsuccessful.
5. The visit will be cancelled when the Hong Kong Observatory issues the Red or Black
Rainstorm Warning Signal, or Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above two hours before

The Sunflower Primary Schools Epilepsy Education Programme
(Education and Training Talk on Epilepsy Knowledge and Seizure First Aid Management)
Aims / Objectives
This is to invite heads and teachers-in-charge of primary schools to arrange the above talk
for their teachers and/or students.
Details
2. Enlighten-Action for Epilepsy (www.enlightenhk.org) is a non-medical charity that aims
to benefit anyone directly or indirectly affected by Epilepsy. ‘The Sunflower Primary Schools
Epilepsy Education Programme’ is one of the Education and Training programmes of
Enlighten-Action for Epilepsy. Through this programme, they offer FREE bi-lingual ‘Epilepsy
Knowledge and Seizure First Aid Management’ educational talks to Primary Schools throughout
Hong Kong.
3. Enlighten-Action for Epilepsy has developed a 40 minutes to 1.5 hours on-site training
talk for teachers and/or students that aims to:
Improve the knowledge and understanding of Epilepsy in Hong Kong schools to
ensure that today’s children /adolescents becomes tomorrow’s supportive society.
Develop teachers/children/adolescents’ skills needed to deal with Epilepsy so that
everyone can manage seizures effectively and safely.
Ensure that teachers/children/adolescents establish an inclusive environment in which
people with, and who are affected by Epilepsy have a more proactive school life.
Develop the children/adolescents’ empathy skills and ensure that they can create and
grow up in an inclusive community, free of bias and discrimination.
Promote equal opportunity.
4. The target audiences of the above talk are (1) Teaching staff, (2) P.1 – 3 Students, (3) P.4 –
6 Students and (4) Parents. There is no restriction on the number of attendees for each talk, however,
a maximum size of 60 people is suggested to ensure the participants receive and understand the
information thoroughly. In addition, due to the limited sponsorship, the above talk will be provided
in 3 different seasons with 20 sessions at most in each season. For details, please refer to the
reply slip (Appendix 9a).
5. Schools are invited to organise the above talk in their schools. Those who wish to
organise the programme by December 2012, are invited to complete and return the reply slip
(Appendix 9a) by fax (fax no.: 3020 3314) to Enlighten-Action for Epilepsy. Schools are welcome
to indicate other preferred dates for training talks on the reply slip, should not arrangements be
possible during the specified period.
