I was fortunate to be able to spend last week attending the Australian primary principals Conference in Sydney. There were a number of international and local speakers who were able to give a great insight into education across the globe and be involved in hearing good debates about funding and equity of Education. Particularly memorable was a presentation by John Mclean who featured on 60 Minutes last night. It is a truly inspirational story of a first grad footballer, hit by an 8 tonne truck while training for a triathlon; rendering him a paraplegic. Despite this, he was able to recuperate the rest of his body to represent Australia at the 2000 Olympics in the demonstration sport of wheelchair racing and also in the 2004 Beijing Olympic as a rower, gaining a silver medal. His biggest win was learning to walk again for the first time in 25 years. To top it off yesterday, he completed the Nepean Triathlon – the same event he was training for 25 years ago when he was hit. Touch Gala Day
What an extremely satisfying day! All the children are to be congratulated for their efforts under hot and steamy conditions. They are also to be com-mended for their excellent sportsmanship. The Girls played four matches including three con-vincing wins and one narrow loss. This is a fantas-tic achievement considering many of the girls have had limited experience on the touch field. They can all be very proud of how hard they tried and for the huge improvement they made as a team as the carnival progressed. The Boys were equally impressive recording three convincing wins and one loss. They improved sig-nificantly with every game, while displaying tre-mendous teamwork, which resulted in some won-derful tries and a lot of busy defence. The main emphasis of the day was to have fun while improving their skill level and there was plenty of both happening on the field. I would like to thank all the parents and relatives who were able to come along and support the children, especially to those who provided transport. The children were certainly boosted by your rousing cheers from the sideline. A special thank you goes to Mr Kelly who, once again, gave up his valuable time to coach the boys and guide them around the field. Your assistance is very much appreciated.
