a cooler Salinas?prospective gentrifation and the expansion from Silicon Valley in Salinas, CA

What does the Mission District, Echo Park, and Silverlake have in common (besides being in California, containing pretentious hipsters, everything conscious and artisanal)?

GENTRIFICATIONNoun. The buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper or middle income families or individuals, thus improving property values--but often displacing low-income families and small businesses.Whos to blame? The government? The real estate market? The Ellis Act passed by a real estate lobby in 1986. It permits landlords to remove rent- controlled units from the rental market and turn them into condominiums for sale.Usually in gentrified neighborhoods, real estate prices rise and theres a motivation for profit and to kick out long-term and low-

income tenants. The tech boom? Before Mark Zuckerburgs move to the Mission in 2012, the 90s tech boom was soaring. The SF neighborhood consisted of a predominately Central American families and broke college students. Today, a two-bedroom and one bath can cost up to $5000 a month. This sucks for the many people whom worked in the service sector jobs, since the 80s. Central American immigrants came to the now, so-called, sanctuary city, integrating local political with internationalist ethics. The displacement of these families is damaging to their culture and close- knit community. The new highly paid, primarily Caucasian and Asian, tech workers are moving into the long-term working-class communities of color. How....ironic?Could gentrification happen in Salinas? Or is it slowly happening already?

  • Fact#1: eating 10 times a day will keep the demons away

  • its time we stop worrying! and get angry you know! But not angry and pick up a gun! but angry and open our minds!

  • He kissed his cheek. and then he knew...that you could become home-sick for people too.

  • Happy saint pattys day

    Fact #2 : shit stinks.

  • people born in 1997 are turning 18. Now, do you know how scary that is? I am frightened by the

constant progression of time and space.

  • Its not your responsibility to keep my lungs clean. I would never burden you with the task of saving me from my-self. For many years I was strong enough to keep your head above water so therefore Im capable of being my own floatation device.

I kept my fire on ice, waiting for the day Id see you again and now its too much to handle.

  • its ok to lose touch with the people you use to be

  • in my next life I can make things right.

For now, I just have to lay here and

watch these strangers come to my bed-

side and count the rings around my eyes.

One of them smells of stale coffee and

cigarettes and reminds me of a time

when love was all we had to give. To be

trapped in a shell that was once vividly

animated is the worst kind of fate to be

had. I would give anything to walk in an

open field underneath a blazing sun but

    that times long since passed.

    hopefully

  • In case you didnt know, Salinas Valley is the fresh food capital of America and home to agricultural giants such as Dole Foods, Chiquita, Driscoll Berries, and Taylor Farms, just to name a few.In the next few years, Salinas will have innovative new uses of information in all aspects of farming--from yield optimization, to food safety and quality, to distribution, to water management, vehicles, and new methods of growing food--due to advances in technology.Like many industries, the agriculture industry is being transformed by the use of data, in all its variety, said Deborah Magid, Director of Software Strategy in IBMs Venture Capital Group (Hartnett, 2014). IBM recently announced a collaboration to use data-driven agriculture solutions to enhance efficiency by 20%.Smart-farming will accommodate the middle-class that is expected to grow from 1.5 billion to 4.5 billion. Fortunately, Americas increased awareness of healthy eating will contribute to the growth and demand of the agricultural industry. With all this techcitement and expansion of the Silicon Valley to Salinas, is it possible to have a gentrified city with artisanal yummy delights? There is an accelerated computer science degree program at Hartnell College, that is targeted at students from the agricultural Salinas

Valley community. After there coursework is complete, the students can earn their degree at Cal-State University-Monterey Bay.Were going to bring a population thats not fully represented in Silicon Valley, says Joe Welsh, one of the programs co-founders(NPR.org). United States based tech workers include way less than five percent of Hispanics and Blacks. Women make up 20%.Salinas Valley has pride and is compassionate to their community, which would make it somewhat difficult to completely gentrify the neighborhood. However, I believe Salinas is open to change and at the same time, maintain and enrich the cultures that have traditionally made Salinas what is today.

Salinas has its own kind of cool.

Next month:Would gentrification be agood thing?

Taurus, I think its time to log off Netflix and call your friends. Venus has plans for you this month and March could bring you something right out of a romantic comedy. A secret affair, perhaps?

Gemini! There are two sides to you this month (obviously) and the first half wants to forget financial commitment and break free from responsibility. The second half of you wants to retire and be low-key even if that means sleep-ing in your car.

You have big plans this month, Cancer! I hope you let those around you know because they might feel alienated by your decisions if it doesnt include them.

Leo, this month you are trying to figure out how to break the cycle. You know that you cant flip burgers for the rest of your life. Really think about going back to school.

Ever so pure, Virgo. Mars and Venus are lined up this month and its making you irresistible. You need to open yourself up to new possibil-ities for that may be the key to break from old chains.

Libra, pick a damn side already.

Scorpio! Loyalties will be tested and remember things don't always follow your plan.

It's time for you to learn that family isn't everything, Sagittarius. Now is the time to show people what you are made of.

Capricorn, you may not keep up with the Kar-dashian's but you need to keep up with what's going on outside your bubble.

Aquarius, you are on the right track even if you're the only one on the road. You need to go down the road less traveled, alone.

I can see that you're complacent, Pisces. Now is the time to strike. Start that novel you've been dreaming about.

Always the troublemaker, Aries. Your charm will get the attention you need this month but the per-

son you need to pay most atten-tion to is yourself. Oh, and Aries PLEASE DONT SPEND MONEY

    YOU DONT HAVE!
