Representatives from Davenport High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter returned from last week’s State Business Leadership Conference in Spokane. This conference was a huge success as the chapter brought home several different awards, which include a trip for seven members to attend this year’s National Leadership Conference, which will take place in Orlando, Florida at the end of June.

For the American Enterprise project, Washington State FBLA said the purpose of the project was

to “promote an awareness of some facet of the American Enterprise system.” In efforts to do so, Conner Van Pevenage and Sam Graber decided to look into how each business in Davenport contributes to the diverse economy that we enjoy. “Due to these factors, we felt it would be beneficial for our students to learn about the small businesses at the cornerstone of our local economy,” states Conner Van Pevenage. This project earned second place and gave Sam and Conner a ticket to Orlando. Conner Van Pevenage also placed second place in Accounting I.

As stated in previous editions, Davenport FBLA partnered with the Lincoln Hospital for the Community

Service project and the Partnership with Business project. After many months of hard work both of these projects received second place as well; giving Samantha Sawyer, Cheyenne Pace, Peter Rustemeyer, Rosie Cruz, and Tanner Perry the right to compete at nationals as well.

Davenport also competed in the Local Chapter Annual Business Report and received third place. Our annual report was written by Samantha Sawyer and Ian Bouchard and it was to explain what the chapter has done throughout the school year (i.e. fundraising, recruitment, leadership development, service to school and community, etc.).

Elizabeth Wandling and Andie Stri te took on the Business Financial Plan entitled Backyard vacations. “We were to create a financial plan for a business that provided families the opportunity to have a vacation without leaving the comfort of their own home,” Wandling explained. “Overall it was fun. Both Andie and I learned that running a business can be a very consuming task, and it wasn’t even real!”

Lastly, Nick Halverson, Matthew Rosman, and Allie Johnson

competed in the Banking and Financial Systems competition. The three team members had to take an objective test and if they scored high enough, they would have an oral presentation. During their presentation they were given a case study consisting of a problem encountered in the banking and financial business community. Even though Nick, Matthew, and Allie did not get to go on stage, they took eighth place out of over 70 teams.

A l s o , P e t e r R u s t e m e y e r completed his second term as a state officer for Washington FBLA, serving this year as the State Parliamentarian. In addition, he received a $1000 scholarship f rom the Washington Sta te FBLA Professional Division. Congratulations to all the members from Davenport FBLA who competed at the State Business Leadership conference and good luck to Samantha, Cheyenne, Conner, Sam, Peter, Rosie, and Tanner at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando!

For twelve years we’ve waited to walk up that gym floor aisle,

And say goodbye to all the people that made school worthwhile.

Who gave us homework to prepare us for a test once called the WASL,

Unfortunately we all found out it was just some pointless hassle.

We thank you for the things we’ve learned and the values we hold dear,

Like how Mrs. Parsons can throw a shoe like a bombardier.

Oh, the memories we have in high school will remain with us forever,

But Senioritis blurs our minds and leaves us feeling, “whatever.”

As we go about our lives and find our destinies, All of us will think back on these high school years

with ecstasy. To the underclassmen we leave behind, we leave you

with this advice, Try your hardest, have fun and play; high school is

quite a trice. We hope you miss us our class of two-thousand eleven. And hope the time you had was us was like that of in

heaven.

By Sarah SotoEditor

We all have waited for that day, that day of pure freedom and a chance to “get away”; a chance to move forward with our lives and on to higher education. We all thought it could never come soon enough, but here it is; graduation.

Those twelve years, which sometimes felt like prison, are finally over. Now we have come to the point where we will create our different paths in life. Most of us will go on to Eastern and Spokane colleges, staying close to home, and the rest of us will venture off to farther cities and even states. The journey throughout high school was quite an adventure for the class of 2011 and will surely be a great memory to never forget. But as we go on with our separate lives, just like high school, we will always come upon obstacles- whether they are big or small, life changing, or a pondering thought; they will always be there.

High school tried its best to prepare us for the “real world” and now it is our job to make a use of that knowledge. I was always taught everything is possible so shoot for my goals (big or small), but I always had my doubts and questions. Is it worth the hard work and time? Do I want

to go through that much effort? Well, there is a simple answer for that-

yes. We have all had our goals we would like to accomplish; maybe it is trying to pass an impossible class, something in your own personal life you want to overcome or even going to the moon. While trying to gain your accomplishments, you may fall- but just as Dory from Finding Nemo says, just keep swimming. When you are at the point of self doubt and are about to give up- tell yourself in the end it will be worth it and just keep swimming.

You over came high school and you will surely overcome life outside of it. No matter which path we choose to walk, there will be something in your way of making it to your final destination; remember everything is possible and just keep swimming. I wish the best of luck to the graduating class of 2011!
