Whee Wednesdays

Join us on Wednesdays for a time of food and fellowship beginning at 5:30pm, followed by classes from 6:15pm-7:00pm (yoga will begin at 6:00pm in the Small Fellowship Hall). We come to church to serve and build relationships with one another, and our church family has the privilege of hosting college students and at-risk

youth from the HIGHTS program on Wednesday nights, giving us another opportunity to be in service! This semester the meal will be free, but we ask that you bring a side dish that will feed your family plus 3-4 other students. The church will provide a catered meat, drinks, and dessert. Please RSVP each week so we have a count for the main dish! There will also be a fundraiser meal the last Wednesday of each month, which will allow us to support amazing ministries in our church and in our community. We look forward to another wonderful semester of Whee Wednesdays!

United Methodist Women (UMW) began on a stormy evening in 1869. Women from 28 churches in Boston were invited to hear two missionaries speak about the desperate needs of women in India, but only six women attended because of the terrible weather. Yet that handful of women started a movement that grew into today’s UMW, which supports 95 National Mission Institutions and 120 international ministries.

Harvey. Irma. Maria. More stormy evenings, but far worse, with torrential rain and fierce winds resulting in destruction and death. In response to the hurricanes, our church recently packed cleaning buckets for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The buckets made their way to the UMCOR Sager Brown Depot in Louisiana for distribution to flooded areas.

Sager Brown Depot is just one of 95 institutions supported by UMW. The history of the Depot goes back to shortly after the Civil War, when a UMW predecessor group built an orphanage and school for African-American children. The property later served other functions as needs changed. It was repurposed to be the center of relief operations for UMCOR after Hurricane Andrew hit Florida and Louisiana in 1992. Sager Brown Depot is a powerful symbol of the impacts UMW has in lives everywhere and its ability to change as needs change.

Cullowhee UMW typically contributes around $2000 annually to local and global ministries, including Cullowhee Kids ‘camperships’, United Christian Ministries, Wesley Foundation, and our Pledge to Mission for the national and international ministries of United Methodist Women. We are able to do this because of the individual pledges of local unit members, contributions given at our monthly meetings, and donations from church members.

In lieu of a fundraising luncheon this year, we are asking for your support in response to this letter. Checks may be made payable to Cullowhee UMW. (If you prefer to make the check to the church for tax purposes, please be sure to write “UMW” on the memo line so it is properly directed.)

A handful of women met on a stormy night in 1869 and their legacy continues today. What will be our legacy?

Thank you for your support. JoAnn Black, unit President Bonnie Stephens, unit Treasurer Lisa Bacon, unit Missions Coordinator

Jackson County Council on Aging

Dear Friends, As the weather turns cooler, we start thinking of the holidays and the fast approaching Christmas season. Each year at this time the Jackson County Department on Aging asks that you befriend our county’s elderly residents who have little or no family in the area. Many of these elderly residents are also homebound, preventing them from getting out to enjoy the decorations and events of the season. With these needs in mind, the Department on Aging is organizing Operation Christmas Box 2017. We hope that again this year we can match the generosity and good will of last year when we collected over 500 Christmas Boxes to brighten the holidays for our elderly residents. The following flyer describes the Christmas Box we ask you to consider giving to our County’s elderly. Church groups and civic organizations can consider preparing one or two boxes for your group. If anyone in your group would like to wrap, pack or deliver Christmas boxes this year, please contact Karen Davis at the Department on Aging, 631-8041. There is no better way to enjoy the season than by giving to others. In Sincere Appreciation, Eddie Wells, Director Jackson County Department on Aging.

Please bring items to the church office by

November 31.
