Respect Opening
Lead the following discussion with the Cub Scouts:
Our Core Value for the month of December is “Respect”.
Who can tell me what they think “Respect” means?
[Cub Scouts probably have an idea of what “Respect” means.] Integrate as many
of their answers as possible while you make sure that they understand that
Respect means showing regard for the worth of someone or something.
How can a Cub Scout have respect for people?
[Listen to their responses and remind them that they can show respect when they
take turns or help others. They can also show respect when they learn about
other people – their cultures, their religions, and their lives. If you need to, give
some examples or stories of how you have shown respect.
Let’s have a great day in Cub Scouting today.
Let’s say the Pledge of Allegiance and the Cub Scout Promise.
What Do You Like about December? Poster
Materials:
Paper (copy paper or manila paper)
Markers/Crayons
With just paper and markers/crayons, the Cub Scouts need to express what they
like about the month of December. They can use pictures and/or words. It can be
something about holiday celebrations, being out of school for a little bit, traveling
with family, etc.
Depending on your time restrictions, this activity can take 10 minutes or even 20
minutes.
Communication Games The Body Language Game and Charades
We communicate in many different ways. Lead a short discussion and have the Cub Scouts list as many ways as they can showing how they can communicate. [Examples might be: telephone, email, letters, television, sign language, emotions, body language, billboards, etc].
The Body Language Game:
We often send messages without meaning to do it. People can see how we feel by a frown or a smile, or by a shrug of our shoulders. Such facial expressions and gestures are called body language. Animals use body language, too. When a dog's tail is wagging, you know it is happy. When a cat arches its back, or bares its claws, you know it is prepared to fight.
1. As a group come up with 10 to 15 feelings that you can show. Examples: happy, sad, angry, excited, relaxed, strong, compassion, energetic, sorry, proud, miserable, scared, guilty, uncomfortable, tired, confused.
2. Taking turns have each Cub Scout show one of the discussed feelings. 3. Scoring: the first person to guess correctly gets a point; if no one guesses
correctly, the "actor" gets a point.
Charades
This is a "parlor game" that became popular at about the turn of the century. In it, the "actor" tries to convey a name, title, or other clue by only using body actions - no words. You can create teams to compete against each other or you could have individual scores. Some words that could be given to the Cub Scouts to act out are: frog, train, Indian, elephant, angel, ghost, monkey, scarecrow, bear, robot, airplane, caterpillar, lion, pig, swim, cowboy, umpire, penguin, pirate, butterfly, comb, camera, hammer, banana, thermometer, hot dog, boat, toothbrush, apron, badge, scissors, volcano, ladder, milkshake, crash, telephone, dance, sleep, money, horseshoe, guitar, mask, shoot, whiskers, arrow, glove, tent, campfire, flag, drum, bugle, bunk bed, bicycle, heart, socks, shovel, star, lollipop, wheel, bandage, gate, tepee, see-saw, door, bald, ant, witch, key, kiss, cat, puppy, skate, grasshopper, cell phone, alligator, ketchup, zipper, cowbell, king, artist, alligator
Communication Closing
Materials:
None
Have everyone gather in a circle.
Cubmaster: We communicate with other people every day of the year. We know
that we can communicate with words and without words. We can even
communicate through our facial expressions and our feelings.
Let’s remember that we all communicate differently. We can respect those
differences. Some of us are better at communicating with words. Some of us are
better at drawing pictures to communicate.
In whatever way we communicate, let’s always try to do our best to
communicate good ideas to everyone.
Have a great week Cub Scouts!
