Dear Parents/Guardians
Thank you to all our parents who came to Year 9 Parents’ Evening on 10 January and Year 10 on 7 February.
On 17 January all our Year 11 pupils took part in a Taster Day where they experienced life in our Sixth Form. They were joined by pupils from other local schools who are very welcome to register with us for September.
At the end of January Mr Goodenough ran a trip to Leyland DAF for our Year 10 and 12 Design & Technology pupils. Then on 6 February we took some of our Key Stage 4 pupils to Scarisbrick Hall to inspire them to study Science at A Level and higher, and later that week a similar trip was run for pupils interested in studying English.
National Safer Internet Day was observed on 5 February. The aim of this is to think about how to use technology responsibly, respectfully, critically and creatively. This year the focus was on how online consent works in an online context, ie how they ask, give, and receive consent online, including how they take and share images and videos or how they manage their privacy and data.
On 11 February I was invited to be a judge at CTK’s Bake Off final. I assumed my Paul Hollywood persona for the occasion and had the very difficult job of tasting all the delicious bakes – well, someone’s got to do it! Full details, including photos, will be posted in our next newsletter.
On Friday we will be observing Go Orange Day which is a charity fundraiser, suggested by the joint School Council division of the Southport Learning Partnership. Many schools from across the region will be taking part to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK. Our pupils are invited to wear an orange jumper, tie, tee-shirt or accessories in return for a £1 donation.
Your trousers/skirt and shoes must be standard school uniform, and blazers and jumpers must be worn. Alternatively, if you are wearing an orange jumper then you must wear your shirt, tie and blazer. If you do not wish to take part in Go Orange Day, you can still make a donation to the cause. Listen to Bertie’s story to hear about some of the people you could help by taking part in Go Orange day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vONj2y5X-Io&feature=youtu.be

COMMUNICATION Good communication is very important between
everyone in the school community. We try to keep
good links with families in the following ways:-
The Pupil Planner is great for short messages and
we will try to respond to these as quickly as
possible.
We use our website, Teachers2Parents text and
email service to make sure information gets to
families as quickly as possible.
If you have any general queries please email the
school office at [email protected]
and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

The correct procedure is: -
Pupils should report to Student

one of our First Aiders will assess
their symptoms. They should
not contact their parents
direct.
A member of staff will then
contact you to arrange collection
of your child.
We would be grateful if you could
wait until Student Services have
contacted you regarding your child’s
sickness before coming to school to
collect your child.
Thank you for your
continued support.
Reporting a Pupil’s First Day of Absence -
If your child is unwell please contact school
via 01704 565212 and select Option 1 before
9.30 am or email :-
Your message will be picked up and marked
accordingly on our computer system.
If we are missing register marks you will
receive an Absence Text Message requesting
you contact school advising of your child’s
absence.
PLEASE DO NOT TEXT MESSAGE TEACHER
2 PARENTS UNLESS REPLYING TO A
RECEIVED TEXT MESSAGE as this is not

The school, along with the rest of the country, will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 7th March. Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils
and Sixth Form students can come into school dressed as a character from their favourite book. There will be prizes for the best
costumes. You could use the half term to start cutting, sewing, gluing and painting your own individual costume or, alternatively,
pop to the shops to get one! Also Design a National Book Token
Competition sheets have been given out in registers for pupils to join in. The closing date for entries is Friday 29th March 2019. Winners will be announced in early summer 2019.
There will be quizzes on the day in the library and around the school. We will be having a mini ‘book themed’ fair in the library where there will be different stalls for pupils to visit. Junior librarians will also be holding a
cake sale and there will be book inspired stalls like the Hunger Games Wheel of Destiny. A small fee will be
charged for some of the events. All proceeds will be shared between the school’s charity – Queenscourt - and the School Library Fund.
On the day all pupils will be given a World Book Day token which they
can exchange for a £1 book or put towards a more expensive book at supermarkets and bookshops. We will also be holding a book swap in
our AR lessons throughout that week.

Parking/Picking Up and Dropping Pupils Off
I would like to remind parents that parking on school property to collect pupils is not condoned by school. We request that parents do not park in the rear car park and do not drive onto the school site.
We would also ask parents to consider the safety of pupils on
Stamford Road. In the mornings, particularly, some parents are pulling over on the yellow lines completely blocking the road.
This clearly poses a safety risk to our pupils. Please do contact school
Year 9 Tall Ships Cat - Merseyside Police
PC Maggie Howard attended our Year 9 assembly to inform the pupils about the exciting opportunity
opened to ten schools in the borough by entering their competition.
Pupils had to write a short letter/paragraph stating why they should participate in this ‘once in a
lifetime’ adventure and we’re pleased to announce Harry White has been selected as one of the pupils
to sail on the Catamaran from Portsmouth to the Channel Islands during the May half term.
Just a heads up Year 9 will be taking part in a CELL's day on Friday 15th
March 2019, details to follow.
If anyone would like any more information please contact me or have a look at this link - https://www.cells-itsup2u.org/

Guidance We would like to welcome you to our Guidance Programme here at Christ the King Catholic High School.
We operate a programme which provides lessons in six key areas, each delivered by a team of specialist teachers. These areas are designed to address topical issues relating to today’s youth and thus prepare them for life as a student and beyond. The Guidance groups include: PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education), Economics and Enterprise, Learn to Learn, Citizenship, CIAG and Year 7. All of the groups, with the exception of Year 7, are delivered to year groups 8-11 inclusive. Pupils are taught on a two-week cycle whereby they receive one Guidance lesson delivered to their form groups; this is then supplemented throughout the year with assemblies and outside speakers. To discover more regarding the teams and what content they deliver, please visit our school website. We assess pupils formally on a yearly basis and on some occasions throughout the year. Year 7 - Guidance is mostly delivered to Year 7 form classes by their form teachers. It covers relevant topics such as: New School Anxieties (with starting secondary school being a big step, we recognise this and try to alleviate any worries they may have pertaining to this), Ready to Learn (ensuring pupils are equipped and understand what is required of them), Child Protection, Radicalisation & Extremism and Internet Safety. A complete list of the lessons/topics covered is available via our Guidance timetable which is located on our school website. PSHE - Personal, Social and Health Education. As this suggests, it is based on the healthy aspects of life and also deals with issues that are pertinent in today’s society. Such topical issues include: Knife Crime, Child Sexual Exploitation and Forced Marriages. These lessons also focus on forging healthy relationships, the effects of smoking, First Aid and Sex Education. CIAG - The aim of this group is to prepare our pupils for extended study or work. Lessons focus on preparing a curriculum vitae, interview techniques, applications for college and further study, careers guidance, the labour market, your rights as an employee, making the right choices and employability skills.
Citizenship - Our Citizenship Group prepares our pupils for becoming valued members of society and contributing towards it. Topics covered include: Radicalisation & Extremism, Volunteering, Rights & Responsibilities, the Electoral System, Human Rights and The Law. Many more topics are addressed; please refer to the Guidance timetable for more information. Economics & Enterprise -These lessons aim to assist pupils with learning about monetary issues; they prepare them for opening the correct bank accounts to calculating APR and understanding how it works. Pupils are taught about stocks & shares, pensions and loans. The enterprise aspect is delivered via a series of lessons including: Marketing, Consumer Rights, The Economy & Sweatshops and The Household. Learn to Learn - Learn to Learn provides pupils with the tools to assist their revision and time management - invaluable skills when preparing for examinations. Pupils are taught to appreciate different learning styles, self-assessment, resilience, working with others and higher order thinking skills. Together, these and more contribute to the pupil’s wellbeing and preparation and reducing anxiety during examination periods. If you require more information on the above, please visit our school website. Guidance update - We are pleased to announce that after performing a recent pupil survey, our Guidance lessons are proving beneficial and our pupils rate them highly. Our Guidance curriculum has been amended this year to incorporate valuable issues that are pertinent in today’s society. We continue to be open to ideas from pupils regarding the Guidance lessons and welcome any suggestions they may have. Our school website has now been updated with the 2017-18 Guidance timetable and links explain the groups that deliver the curriculum (please refer to the information above).
If you require more information please do not hesitate to contact me via [email protected].

This has been another busy half term in Sixth Form. Year 12 students have completed their mock examinations and will receive progress reports in their subjects shortly. Year 13 students have finished their UCAS applications (followed by a collective sigh of relief!) and are now busy attending interviews, applicants' days and deciding which of their university offers to accept. Student Finance is now on the agenda and those intending to go to university in September should now be considering completing their applications which have to be completed online. Please visit www.gov.uk/
studentfinance for information regarding this. Mr Alexander
This event was held on Thursday 17th January. The day offered our prospective Sixth Form students from Year 11 at Christ the King the opportunity to be Sixth Form students for the day. After an introduction in the Main Hall, students followed individual timetables of Sixth Form style lessons in the subjects they are interested in studying post-16. The day was very successful with student feedback incredibly positive.
Thank you to all those Year 11 pupils who have applied to join us in September, and we are looking forward to seeing our Sixth Form continue to flourish. Informal interviews have been taking place before half term.
If you still haven’t decided what to do next year, it’s not too late to apply – just
pop into the Sixth Form Atrium.
