APRIL April 10th Compost education centre opens for the season April 13th ALL ABOUT MASON BEES Time: 10:00 am - 11:30 am Learn about one of nature’s great pollinators. Hosted by the City of Campbell River with support from CSWM compost education centre, learn how you can have mason bees in your own backyard. Our guest speaker: AL MORTON will cover topics such as: -The life cycle of our native ason bees and the importance of pollination -How, when and where to start your bee colony -Building bee houses, nesting boxes and nesting tubes Please note location: CR Community Centre 401-11th Ave (Donation to the food bank would be appreciated) April 19th EARTH WEEK FILM FESTIVAL Time: Doors open at 6:30 pm event starts at 7:00 pm Location: Tidemark Theatre, 1220 Shoppers Row, Campbell River Join Elaine “the Compost Diva” and Gayle Bates, waste reduction educator for the ‘Power of R’, at this fun Earth Week event. We will also be unveiling the youth “Green Team” for the compost education centre. The “Green Team’ is new program at the centre for youth between 7 - 12 years of age. Drop by and sign up your child for ongoing environmental programs. April 22nd EARTH DAY April 27th WAKE UP YOUR COMPOSTER! Time: 10:00 am Spring composting! Learn how to divert approximately 1/3 of your household waste while creating fabulous nutrients for your plants and gardens through composting. This interactive workshop demonstrates the basics including a variety of compost techniques. Elaine, the compost diva will assist you in successful composting techniques. * This is an outdoor workshop. MAY May 4th ST. PETER’S PLANT SALE Time: 9:00 am - 2:00 pm Join CSWM educators, Elaine Jansen and Gayle Bates, at this amazing plant sale. Drop by the compost education centre, tour the gardens, and ask questions about composting, pesticide awareness and upcoming workshops. We also will have master gardeners on site to answer all your gardening questions. Please note: If bringing samples for the master gardeners to identify, please make sure they are in a sealed clear plastic bag for identification. May 18thLong weekend – closed Saturday

May 25thGARDENER’S LENDING LIBRARY OPENS!Drop by the centre and take a look at our “new” lending library of gardening books. Gardeners in Campbell River have kindly donated these books to the centre. You are welcome to stop in when the centre is open, take a book home or just to sit in the gardens at the centre on a nice sunny day and read. Please note: Some books are only for reference use. If you have books you would like to donate please contact: Elaine: 250-287-1625

JUNE

June 8thCOMPOSTING & RECYCLING FOR KIDS!Time: 10:00 am Kids teaching kids compost class. Hands on event with Jessica and Katie Revoy winners of the City of CR compost challenge demonstrate hands-on composting and how your children can get involved with your backyard compost. Gayle Bates, waste reduction educator will then show the children how important recycling is to their family. Ages: 6 + with adult in attendance. * This is an outdoor event.

June 15CAR SEAT RECYCLE EVENT!Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm Join us for our 1st car seat recycle event on the North Island. Do you have an expired or damaged car seat you’d like to keep out of the landfill and dispose of it in an environmental friendly way? Bring it to the CSWM compost education centre and we will recycle it for you. We can ensure that every part of a car seat will be recycled including metal, plastic and all useable parts. We will also have certified car seat technicians on hand to assist you with proper installation of your car seat and answer all your questions. This is an outdoor event.

June 22nd & 23rdCR ART GALLERY GARDEN TOURTime: 10:00 am - 4:00 pmJust for these 2 days, we will host our “2nd Annual Recycled Art” in the gardens. We will showcase a collection of home and garden décor created from re-purposed and recycled materials. With pieces ranging from functional to just fun, we hope to inspire you to think about diverting and creating instead of land filling.You don’t have to be a part of the tour to visit us, and admission to our centre is free as always.

There will be lots of examples and ideas – please bring yours to share with the group. This workshop will be in St. Peter’s Church.

October 31stCentre closes for the season

NOVEMBER

November 2nd & 3rdPUMPKIN SMASHTime: Noon – 5:00 pm Join us to keep tons of organic waste out of our “local” landfill by having a smashing good time! This is a fun event for the whole family, enter to win prizes, enjoy refreshments and “SMASH” your jack-o-lantern. These pumpkins will be turned into rich compost instead of becoming a ghoulish waste. Location: parking lot of Strathcona Gardens recreation complex
