CSR Yearly Highlights ( April 14– March 15) 1. Construction of toilets under Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan Bokaro Steel Plant under its CSR Activities launched Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan in line with Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Sri Anutosh Maitra, CEO, BSL kicked off the mission on 10 th February by laying foundation stone for the construction of toilets in Utkramit Madya Vidyalaya , Tetulia in the presence of Villagers, Head of Gram Panchayat, Officials of Education Deptt, Govt. of Jharkhand, State head of Sulabh International and BSL officials. Tentulia is one of the Seven Model Steel Villages developed by BSL under CSR. Under the project, BSL will construct 177 toilets for both boys and girls in 114 state run schools identified by Ministry of HRD, Govt of India. A reputed NGO, M/s Sulabh International Social Service organization(SISSO) having experience of more than 3 decades in the field of construction, operation and maintenance of toilets has been engaged for the job. Every toilet will have the provision for water through hand-pump, force-lift pump and storage tank. M/s SISSO will maintain the toilets for one year maintenance. 2. CSR Yearly Highlights ( April 14– March 15)

3. Distribution of “Low cost Terafil Water filter”:

In an effort to provide clean drinking water to school children and kids enrolled in Aganwadis, BSL under CSR purchased 500 low cost terafill water filters of 30 litre capacity from CIPET, Bhubaneswar. CSIR- IMMT has developed the Terafil water filter, a highly efficient low cost device for supply of clean water. TERAFIL is a low cost burnt red clay porous media (disc/candle), used for filtration & treatment of turbid raw water into clean drinking water for domestic/ community applications. Suspended particles, sediment, iron & many heavy metals, micro-organism, colour & bad odour etc are separated from raw water effectively during filtration. All 500 water filters have been distributed.

4. Plantation of 40000 saplings:

BSL is on green drive to increase green cover in the periphery areas. The plantation drive was kicked off at Kasi Jharia a nearby village on 13/7/2014. Fruit bearing and medicinal saplings were distributed by Vanvasi Kalyan Kendra, Jharkhand. More than thousand saplings were planted with great enthusiasm by officers of BSL and Vanvasi Kalyan Kendra as well as villagers on the inaugural day. All 40000 saplings have been planted in the peripheral villages.

Some of the plants were: Indian Rosewood, Teak, Acacia, Cashew, Gulmohar, Guava, Papaya, Gamhar, Mahogani, Zameer, Blue berry, Karanj, Chatni, Wood apple etc.

Illustrative list of the places where plantations were completed are: Kasi jharia, Kusuma, Ramdih, Obra, Kushtand, Pundru, Turidh, Chotitand, Dungritand, Ranatand, Mahuda, Dabar Bahal, Hupungtand, Koiridih, Bundiatand, Aafandgoda, Babudih, Rangagadha, Silphor, Khamarbendi, TupraKurma, Girdhartand, Ojhadih, Pokhanna, Mircha, Jaamgodia, Bodra, Partand.

5. Free Medical and Health Services:

A. Renewal of the MoU with Cure International India Trust for 5 years for the treatment of Clubfoot Disease:

As a Medical-CSR initiative, a weekly club foot clinic was introduced in March 2013 in association with Cure International India Trust (CIIT) for treatment of Club foot, a congenital deformity of children. Initially the MoU was valid for a year with provision of further extension based on the impact of the project. So far 60 cases have been registered and 49 have been treated successfully. Within a short time the club foot clinic has become popular and a ray of hope for club foot affected children. The patients from distant & remote places are coming for treatment. The club foot clinic at BGH has been identified as the model club foot clinic of Jharkhand by the state Co-ordinator, CURE Clubfoot, Jharkhand.The reason of the club foot is unknown and hence it cannot be prevented but only be treatedFurther, on 4th April 2014, the MoU between BGH and Cure International has been extended for 5 years. On the occasion, on behalf of BGH, Dr. A.K. Singh, Dir I/C M&HS, BGH and Sri Ashray Ekka, State Co-ordinator, Cure International signed the MoU.

A. Bokaro Steel Sarva Swasthya Kendra, Sector V No. of patients treated at Sarva Swasthya Kendra, Sector V, a special hospital run by BSL under CSR for poor and needy people from the month April 14 to Feb 15. A total of almost 14,000 patients given free of cost treatment.

B. Details of One day Medical Camps organised under during April to Feb-14

15 One day medical camps have been organised in the peripheral areas where almost 4500 patients were examined and medicines distributed. Serious and patients needing special treatment were referred to Bokaro General Hospital.

A. Medical Camp during Shravani Mela at Deoghar :Every year BSL under its CSR activity organises a mega medical camp for the lakhs and lakhs of pilgrims who come to offer holy water to Lord Shiva. On 14th July 2014, a group consisting of Medical Practitioners, paramedicos, nurses and employees of BSL went to Deoghar for organising free medical camp in the “Shravani Mela 2014” which has started on 14th July 2014 and ended on 14th Aug 2014.

6. Gramin Volleyball Championship 2014:

Gramin Volleyball Championship 2014” was smoothly & successfully organised at Jainamore from 25th to 27th July 2014.BSL under CSR has been organising sporting events which are normally played in the adjacent rural areas. Earlier also tournaments in the discipline of Football, Kabaddi & Archery were organised in the peripheral villages. The event attracted a number of 08 rural teams. These were: Jainamore, Tand Mohanpur, Kundori , Simulia, Kanari (West),Tupkadih, Beldih & Sibutand. The Volleyball ground of Navayuvak Kala Manch, Jainamore was the venue. In semi-finals, four teams Jainamore, Kanari, Tandmohanpur and Beldih secured their place by beating their opponents. . Final was played between Jainamore and Tandmohanpur and Jainamore emerged as winner.

7. Support to differently abledA. On 15th August 2014, CEO BSL conferred a cheque of Rs. 6,84,000/- (Six lakhs eighty

four thousand rupees only) to Asha Lata Viklang Vikas Kendra, an N.G.O. working

for the education , rehabilitation and upliftment of all types of differently abled

children at Bokaro Steel City. At present 194 differently abled students are being

taken care by AVVK.  However, the income of AVVK only meets the expenditure of 99

students and they   requested for reimbursement of the tuition fee for 95 students

@ Rs 600 per student per month to meet deficit. A cumulative amount of Rs.

6,84,000/- has been provided for meeting the tuition expenses of 95 students from

April 14 to March 2015.

B. Four blind students of Asha Lata got placement offer from “Samarpan Trust for

Disables”, Banglore. Samarpan Trust assists differently abled children to get

employment. All selected students will be working in a Banglore based Call centre

and lend their assistance to needy customer. Four students who have been selected

are: Upendra Kumar, Priya Kumari, Shahnaz Perveen and Kavita Kumari. Along with

attractive pay packages, they will be provided free fooding and staying facilities in

Banglore.

8. Skill Development of unemployed youth of periphery:A. 2 week vocational training to students of Electrician trade of Rikhia Panchayat

under CSR of BSL In the month of January 2015, BSL under CSR imparted 02 week duration short term livelihood linked skill development training to students of Electrician trade of Rikhiapeeth, in the following courses. 1. House Wiring2. Ceiling Fan Winding3. Table fan Winding4. Repair & Maintenance of Stabilizer ( Auto Transformer Winding)5. Repair of Emergency Light ( LED)6. Repair & Maintenance of Water Pump7. Tube light Set-up

In brief, Rikhiapeeth was founded in the year 1989 near Deoghar, Jharkhand. They have taken up the noble cause of uplifting poor, sick, needy, downtrodden and neglected sections of society through a no. of interventions. For enhancing the skill as well as livelihood of graduate boys and girls of Rikhia panchayat, the Principal of ITI, Rikhia had requested BSL to impart training in above mentioned short term courses. It is noteworthy to mention here that as per SAIL CSR policy, 20% job can be taken up outside the periphery. It is relevant here to mention that BSL under CSR runs an ITI i.e BPITI which has expertise in imparting training in above mentioned seven courses. Therefore the job was carried out by BPITI. The entire cost on consumables and on the remunerationof 3 instructors for 2 weeks had been borne by BSL under CSR. Proposal for skill development through CIPET, Bhubneshwar is in the advanced stage of approval.

I. 116 Trainees (Fitter- 42, Electrician-42, Welder-32) of Bokaro Pvt ITI attended 2 months “On The Job” training in various departments of Bokaro Steel Plant.

II. 84 students (Electrician-42 and Fitter-42) admitted in Bokaro Pvt ITI for February Session 2014-16 .

III. Madhusudan Hembram, a fitter trade student of Bokaro Private ITI got selected in M/s New Transmission India Pvt Limited, Greater Noida

9. Gyan Jyoti Yojana:All 15 birhor students have been shifted to Kalyan Vidyala, Sector III for quality education under CBSE board.

10. Women Empowerment: Supply of uniforms for children studying in two schools being run by Mahila

B. Low cost sanitary napkin production unit at Bokaro:

a) Women empowerment has been a thrust area and several projects have been initiated by BSL under CSR to strengthen the commitment. To address the problem of feminine hygiene, BSL under CSR has set up low cost sanitary napkin production unit at Bokaro in collaboration with SRI (Society for Rural Industrialization), Ranchi. In brief, due to the socio-economic condition as well as lack of awareness, the rural women and adolescent girls are unable to maintain cleanliness & hygiene during menstruation period. As a result they become the host of many infectious diseases.

b) Training of 10 women at Society for Rural Industrialization, Ranchi for making low cost sanitary napkin

For Women Empowerment, BSL under CSR has launched a “Low cost sanitary napkin project”. The project is being implemented by Mahila Samiti. The technical partner of the project is Society for Rural Industrialization, Ranchi. Sanitary Napkin Machines have been installed at the Swablamban Kendra, 4E School. From 12th Jan to 16th Jan 15, a group of 10 women went to SRI Ranchi for attending the training program on making low cost sanitary napkin. On 21.1.15, one Technical Expert Ms. Shakuntala Oraon from SRI visited the Swablamban Kendra and demonstrated the sanitary napkin equipment.

11. CII-ITC Sustainability award to BSL/ CSR :

Bokaro Steel Plant submitted its Application of Intent in domain excellence of Corporate Social Responsibility in the CII ITC Sustainability Awards 2014. The detailed application document was sent on 30.06.2014. The first stage of assessment was completed by a team of trained assessors followed by the Jury's approval. BSL qualified for the second stage of assessment. The CII-ITC Sustainability Awards Team lead by Sri Mr. C S Kumar Mentor - Business Process Excellence, Mumbai, visited Bokaro from 12th to 15th

October, 2014. They visited some of the important CSR Projects- Kalyan Vidyalaya, Asha Lata, Sarva Swasthya Kendra, Mahila Udyog Kendra, BGH and a Model Steel Village Khutari. They interacted with CSR, Finance, Personnel, HRD, Law, PR and BE teams etc.

BSL received Commendation for Significant Achievement in Corporate Social Responsibility in category F (Independent Division/Unit) 

12. Arrangement of Aalao under CSR: Seeing the onset of severe cold in the city, arrangement of Aalao (Firewood) was made at 12 locations to protect the poor & slum dwellers from severe cold. It was started on 22/12/2014 and continued till 10.1.15 ( 20 days). On 22.12.14, ED (P&A) lighted up the firewood near Bus Stand, Naya More in the presence of rickshaw pullers. GM (CSR) & other CSR officials were also present on the occasion.

13. Distribution of 1000 blankets among poor and needy under CSR.As a preventive measure, 1000 blankets were distributed in the peripheral villages and inside township among poor and needy people under CSR of BSL. Distribution work was

started on 03.01.15 and continued for 15 days. On 03.01.15, in the presence of CSR Officials, ED (P&A) distributed blankets among poor people.

14. Inauguration of CSR Magazine: a magazine revolving around CSR activities of BSL was launched by CEO BSL. It has been named as VIBGYOR.

15. CSR Jharkhand Conference 2014:On 22nd May 2014, a workshop on “Skill Development & Labour Welfare through CSR“ was conducted by Department of Labour, Employment, Training, Govt. of Jharkhand at BNR Chanakya , Ranchi in collaboration with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). All the industry majors from Jharkhand like Tata group, SAIL/BSL, CIL, HEC, MECON, Usha Martin & Birla group of Companies were present. The workshop was inaugurated by Sri K N Tripathi, Hon’ble Minister, Labour and Employment & Training. In the technical session “Skill Development through CSR” a presentation was made by AGM I/c (CSR)covering the skill development initiatives of BSL such as establishment of an ITI, Vocational training, Gyan Jyoti Yojana, Apprenticeship training and running of an school of Nursing. The efforts of BSL were appreciated.

16. Literate to Matriculate drive for 1400 Women Drop outs:

BSL has launched a mission for women drop outs hailing from peripheral villages to

acquire education upto matriculation.The first phase of “Literate to matriculate “scheme

will facilitate 1400 illiterate girls and women who had dropped out of School, complete

their matriculation examination. This Mission Project is being implemented in

collaboration with Zila Saksharta Samiti, Bokaro and National Institute of Open

Schooling(NIOS).Zila Saksharta Samiti carried out an intensive survey in the region and

selected 1400 literate women from villages of Chas, Chandankiari and Jaridih Block. The

first phase will be executed at a total cost of Rs 57.23 lakhs out of which Rs 32.20lacs will

be paid to NIOS for registration and examination fee and Rs 25.03 lacs to Zila Saksharta

Samiti for preparatory classes, learning material materials and coordination & monitoring

the project. On 26.2.15, Regional Director of NIOS, Ranchi Centre Shri Rajeev Prasad

visited CSR Office and had a detailed discussion regarding implementation of the project.

He appreciated the effort of BSL being taken for women empowerment.

17. Promotion of Art and CultureBSL under CSR for the promotion of Art & Culture has been supporting Bokaro Sangeet Kala Academy which has been a Centre of excellence for promoting Art & Culture in Bokaro district. On 22.3.15, two renowned and noted artists – Dr. Sharad Mani Tripathy, Vocal Artist (New Delhi) and Pandit Durga Das Karmkar, Sitar Vadak (Kolkata) had been invited and gave scintillating performance. Students of Sangeet Kala interacted with these maestros and got a chance to see live performance.
