y The Tata Group is a multinational conglomerate companyheadquartered in Mumbai, India.
y It has interests in steel, automobiles, information technology,
communication, power, tea and hospitality.
y Operates in more than 85 countries across six continents andits companies export products and services to 80 nations.
y Comprises 114 companies and subsidiaries in seven businesssectors, 27 of which are publicly listed. 65.8% of theownership of Tata Group is held in charitable trusts.

y The beginnings of the Tata Group can be traced back to 1868,when Jamshedji Nusserwanji Tata established a trading companydealing in cotton in Bombay (now Mumbai), British India.
y Taj Mahal Hotel in Bombay (now Mumbai) was opened for
business in 1903. This was the next big milestone for the TATAGroup
y The History of the group can be divided into three phases
1868-1931- Foundation
1932-1989- Consolidation
1990 onwards- Expansion

y There are two decision-making bodies that define and directthe business endeavors of the Tata group. These are called
the Group Executive Office and the Group Corporate
Centre.
GEO GCO
Group Executive Office
The Group Executive Office (GEO)
defines and reviews the business activitiesof the Tata group and is involved in
implementing programmes in corporate
governance, human resources, the
environment, etc. The chief objective of
the GEO is to make the Tata group more
synergistic;
Group Corporate Centre
The Group Corporate Centre (GCC) is
a forum at which broad policy issuesrelating to the growth of Tata
companies are reviewed and the entry
into new areas are discussed. The GCC
also plays a key role in
protecting and promoting the Tata brand
in India and across the globe.

The first layer of this structure is the law of the land.
The second tier is based on the Tata code of conduct, acomprehensive set of tenets that all Tata employees have toadhere to.
To ensure that a culture of self-motivated ethics percolates to therank and file, They lay plenty of emphasis on communication, the
third layer of its corporate governance structure

y Today's buzzword, Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR has been
part of the Tata Group ever since the days of Jamshedji Tata.
y From granting scholarships for further studies abroad in 1892 to
supporting Gandhiji's campaign for racial equality in South Africa to
giving the country its first science centre, hospital and atomic
research centre to providing relief and rehabilitation to naturaldisaster affected places - they have done it all.
y While today eyebrows are being raised about corporate doing
social work, the Tata Group feels it is the need of the hour.

Tata Consultancy Services runs an adult literacy programme
Titan has employed 169 disabled people in blue collar workforce at
Hosur
Telco is fighting against Leprosy at Jamshedpur
Tata Chemicals runs a rural development programme at
Okhamandal and Babrala
Tata Tea's education programme and Tata Relief Committee (TRC)
which works to provide relief at disaster affected areas.After the Gujarat earthquake they built 200 schools in two years.

Tata's youth-centric, knowledge-based and social entrepreneurship
initiatives, inspire youth to become better citizens and leaders of
tomorrow

In the West, companies are doubtful of spending theshareholders money and corporates are considering
discontinuing Corporate Social Responsibility but its of prime
importance in country like India.
y Indian companies should be a part of Global Compact, a UN
initiative under which companies adhere to universal
principles on human rights, environment and business ethics.
