President’s Message
Wow! What a fantastic October we had here at
Cave Spring Elementary! I want to thank everyone
who came out to the Fall Fun Run and to the
McTeacher’s Night! We had a fabulous turnout at
both and raised lots of money for CSES! Details are
in this newsletter!
This is the time of year that we all reflect and
give thanks. We have a lot of be thankful for here
at Cave Spring Elementary School: a dedicated and
supportive staff, a giving school community, a
hard-working group of volunteers, an enthusiastic
and curious student body, and so much more!
Please take the time to give thanks and
appreciation!
Let’s not forget to thank the Veterans of our
country! The 5 th graders will put on a Veterans
Day Program at the next PTA meeting, scheduled
for November 14 th at 6:30pm. Please come out
and show your support!
From all the PTA Board, we thank you for your
support of the PTA programs and wish you a very
Happy Thanksgiving!
And remember Gratitude is the best Attitude! A
simple thank you can go a long way!

From the Principal’s Desk. . Here we are, it’s NOVEMBER! Time for cooler weather, leaves changing, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences! I hope your calendar is marked for Tuesday, November 7 for conference day and family shopping at the CSES bookfair. Conference day is 12:00-7:00 pm and the bookfair will be open for families to shop together 11:30 am – 6:00 pm. Hope to see you there! Okay, so I have never proclaimed to be an expert parent nor have I ever worn the “Mother of the Year” crown, not even for a second! But over the years raising my now 20, 17, and 15 year old kids, I now see how little time parents have in this ever-changing role. One of the biggest, fastest moving evolutions in parenting has been the im-mersion of screens into the world and kids’ hands. Children and adolescents today are growing up in a world totally immersed in media. Kids have easy access to be both consumers AND creators of electronic content. They may watch a broadcast show on television, but more likely they’re watching streamed shows or movies. Kids today play video games, of course, and some of the games are actually active or interactive. Although what the media landscape looks like is ever-changing, parents’ role in helping children navigate media remains constant and is absolutely crucial. Balancing life is hard enough without balancing the screens in a house, but just humor me and keep reading for a minute. In October of last year the American Academy of Pediatrics announced new recommendations for children’s media use. This renowned organization also recommended that parents and caregivers develop a family media plan, with parents serving as “media mentors” for kids (www.aap.org). A family media plan is a good way for your family to be proactive in thinking about media use and the balance between it and physical activity, studying, talking, and sleeping. Balance is the key – for elementary and early adolescent students, adults should help kids balance media use with other healthy habits.
When parents and caregivers set expectations and boundaries, we
help kids establish positive media habits. After all, media is such a
part of our world today and it is a great tool for creating,
connecting, AND learning. The AAP recommends the following: • “For children ages 6 and older, place consistent limits on the time
spent using media, and the types of media and make sure media does not take the place of adequate sleep, physical activity and other
behaviors essential to health. • Designate media-free times together, such as dinner and driving,
as well as media-free locations at home (i.e., bedroom).
• Have ongoing communication about online citizenship and safety,
including treating others with respect online and offline.”
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have
questions, concerns, or ideas! I appreciate the partnership we have in your child’s education.
