ELDONA ARNS: Makingthe World a Better PlaceBy Dr. Jim Kok, Pastor of Care Ministries

If you’ve attended any wonderful musical in So Cal with our Singles Ministry in the last tenyears, Eldona Arns probablyarranged it. One can't find amore reliable, committed, andthorough person than Eldona.

Another surprise: If you orsomeone you know took horse-riding lessons in Fullerton duringthe ’70s or ’80s, it is likely El-dona was the teacher. As a six-year-old living in Denver andTexas, Eldona already lovedhorses and read every book inthe library about them. Havingcome from a long line of read-ers, a family of five generationsof college-educated women, her own colleges were Col-orado College and the Univer-sity of Texas, where shemajored, naturally, in English.

When still a youngster, shebecame a horse owner whenher hero-father returned fromWWII. By the time she finishedhigh school, she had becomean expert rider. To this day, El-

dona remains an equestrian, living on herfive-acre Arabian Horse ranch in ChinoHills.

Life has not always been very smoothfor Eldona. Her young sister was killed inan auto accident, and her husband lefther and their three children.

To support the family, Eldona over-came the loss and abandonment byteaching horseback riding. And she wassuccessful at it, with students numberingup to seventy at a time. Though herteaching days continue, her riding daysare done due to leg injuries. Thankfully, this past March, Eldona qualified for one

monthly devotion An Attitude of Gratitude - Part II:GRATITUDE IS BEING THANKFUL FOR EVERYTHINGBy Dr. Bill Bennett

We are told, in Scripture, that we are to be “always giving thanks to God the Fatherfor everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Ephesians 5:20). I believe this“everything” would cover at least two things that would come to us in everyday living.

For example, FOOD; how often do we thank God for ourdaily bread? Did you know that two-thirds of the world goesto bed hungry every night? One-third of the world is underfed,

and one-third of the world isstarving. In fact, thirty peoplestarve to death every minute, and yet we, who have plenty, often complain about dirtydishes!

Even if we do thank Godfor food, how often do wethank God for WATER? Did you know that only 3% ofthe water in this world is fit to drink? That only one-third of one percent of the world's water is available todrink? And that most of that clean water is right herein the United States of America? It’s startling to dis-cover that over one-half of the world’s populationdoes not have easy access to pure drinking water.

“The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and headds no trouble to it” (Proverbs 10:22 NIV). Accord-

ing to this verse, as a Christian, God has blessed you. And, if youhave been blessed by God, you are rich. Let us thank God for the blessings of life, inparticular the simple yet profoundly valuable everyday blessings. Oh, how grateful weought to be for the blessings of God, especially the blessings of food and water!

Dr. Bill Bennett is an ordained RCA Minister serving the Crystal Cathedral as the Lead Pastor for theEvening Service. This devotion is based on a message Dr. Bennett delivered during a recent Evening Service.

Let us thank

God for simple

yet profoundly

valuableeveryday

blessings.

nativity premiered in 1981, one year after theCrystal Cathedral was dedicated, and con-tinues to evolve, with something new to de-light audiences with each holiday season.

During the performances, eight angels fly, some as high as 80 feet and as fast as 25miles per hour. Animals play an integral role inthe production's recreation of the ancientland. You’ll see one camel calf and three adultcamels, six horses, a yak, a llama, a waterbuffalo calf, sheep, and goats. Pre-recordedorchestration by the London Symphony Or-chestra provides the musical backdrop for liveperformances by adult and child soloists. TheCathedral's world-renowned pipe organ alsofills the all-glass structure with glorioussounds.

It’s interesting to note that more than 300Crystal Cathedral volunteers dedicate over160 hours annually as cast members, pro-duction crew members, ushers, traffic hosts, and more. We couldn’t reach out to believersand seekers, alike, without the time and talentthey generously provide.

The Glory of Christmas opens on Thurs-day, December 3, and continues throughSunday, January 3. Early reservations are required for good seating and dates. For information and reservations, go to the boxoffice, call 714-54-GLORY (714-544-5679),or go online to www.crystalcathedral.org.

of America’s first ankle transplants! (Maybe having an M.D. daughter helped her qualify!)One sacrifice she made as she became more involved in the horse world was church

attendance. A church-going Christian since early childhood, Sunday horse shows andriding classes kept church on the sidelines during those most active years. Neverthe-less, something in her connected her children to the faith, and two of her grandchildrenhave since attended Bob Jones University, a very Christian college!

While politically conservative, Eldona is a strong environmentalist. She is a leader ofthe “trails and greenways” committee in San Bernardino, and one of her passions is theSanta Ana River Trail, which will connect the mountains with the ocean. Because of herinvolvement in these and various other community projects and Arabian Horse Associ-ations, she was named “Outstanding Citizen of Chino Valley” in 2002, honored for her“dedicated and honorable community service.”

Eldona Arns, an active Crystal Cathedral Ministering Elder, is one of our treasures. There are many, but this month Eldona gets the prize. She is a special Kingdom Builderat church and in the community. Thank you, Eldona, for making our world a better place.

ask sheila Encourage Your Kids to Be Encouragers

Dear Sheila,My daughter recently lost a classmate to suicide. It’s

been hard on many of her high school friends. However,I have no idea what to say to them. Can you help?- Speechless Dad

Dear Speechless,When I was in college far away from home, a class-

mate, Jane, took her own life. I was beside myself at thenews but God, in His infinite mercy, made sure my dadwas visiting my college that very day. So, I ran acrossthose icy sidewalks with tears streaming down my faceto where he was, and he walked andtalked with me about Jane.

He said, “Sheila, never forget Janebecause you will, during the rest ofyour life, encounter more than oneJane. There are many Janes out there. And they need to hear the message that frees them froma dead-end life. It’s a message that says that they canhave a life that is filled, full filling, overflowing. Let God useyou to speak His message to all the Janes, men orwomen. Give that message to as many people as youcan the rest of your life.”

Once your daughter and friends have had plenty oftime to grieve their friend, I would encour-

age you to encourage them to bekind to those who are feeling

down. Pray with them, “Lord, Ichoose to lose my life, giving mydreams and my doubts aboutmy future to you, so you can

use my life in a meaningful way.Help me to encourage others,

especially those who are feelinghelpless and hopeless to do the same.”

In Christ,Sheila Schuller Coleman

I realized that our school providedan incredible arena to give younger studentsolder role models to look up to.” That pro-gram eventually grew into the GEL (GrowingExceptional Ladies) program where juniorhigh girls continue to meet with senior highmentors, discussing issues like self-confi-dence, making healthy choices, and growingin relationship with the Lord.

gifts poured in and we had just enough! How do we begin to thank you?The year 2009 was not only a miraculous year for the ministry, but it

was a milestone year for the min-istry and me personally. I was to-tally surprised when my fatherand the board asked me to ac-cept responsibility for the futureof my father’s legacy and thisministry. Although reluctant at first(saying yes required HEROIC FAITH, to say the least!), I was further sur-prised by the absolute joy and delight it has been to serve in this position.

How wonder FULL it has been to serve side by side with my father.Having the opportunity to help him share the message of hope hasbeen extremely FULL filling!

In addition to the miracles and milestones at the ministry, my husbandJim and I experienced a joy FULL milestone this year when Jason, our first-born son of four, married the love of his life, Annie (see photo, left).

We praise God this Christmas for so many, many miracles. Most of allwe thank him for the miracle of his Son, Jesus, who is the source of our joy,our love, and our life.

May you and your family experience miraculous milestones this Christ-mas! We are eternally grateful for you and your HEROIC FAITH in us. Godis counting on you and me to make 2010 our 55th year as a congrega-tion—the best year yet.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Dr. Kok’sKindnessKornerIt’s All Greek!By Dr. Jim Kok, Pastor of Care Ministries

MERRY X-MAS! When I was a child, Iwas told that to write X-mas instead ofChristmas was bad. X-mas was, the teach-ers said, an unbeliever’sway of having “Christ-mas” but leaving Christout. My children, thirtyyears later, carried homethe same woeful tale.

Guess what! It isn’t true! For one thing, the X in X-mas isn’t really an X. It is the Greekletter chi (ki), transliterated as kh and repre-senting the Greek word Khristos, which isChrist, of course. So, X-mas is really Christ-mas, too. If you don’t believe me, look upX-mas in the dictionary. Unfortunately, youhave to look it up under the letter X.

IXTHUS. Speaking of Greek, do youknow what IXTHUS means? It is the Greekword for fish. So what!? Well now, for thefirst time, you may understand why a fish isa well-known symbol of Christianity. Here iswhy: the first letter of the Greek word for fishis the first letter of the Greek word for Jesus,

(I) Iesus. The second let-ter X stands for theword Xristos (Christ). The two letters THstand for THEOS (God). The U stands for theGreek word for Son(Uios). The final letter Sstands for the Greekword Savior (soterios).

Put it all together and the letters of theword give this message:

I = JesusX = ChristTH = God’sU = SonS = Savior

So, IXTHUS (FISH) = a symbol of Christianity.

X-mas isreally

Christmas,too.

motto "Ixthuszonton," which

means “fish (JesusChrist God’s Son

Savior) of the living.”

Soul CareLook to the Birds!By Bill Gaultiere, Lead Pastor, Spiritual Formation

One day I was thinking of Jesus’ words:“Don’t worry. Look at the birds... YourHeavenly Father cares for them. Aren’t youmuch more valuable than them?” (Matthew6:25-26, paraphrased). That inspired me tosit down and do some bird watching whileI prayed one day. As I watched and listenedto what was going on above my head,Jesus spoke to my heart.

At first, many things distracted me:lawnmowers and grass blowers, a coldwind blowing, my own concerns and wor-ries. But, I kept looking at the birds in theheavens (the lowest level of the kingdom ofthe heavens is the air right around us), andI kept listening. I discovered that, indeed, Iwas alive in the Kingdom of God with theTrinity, the angels, Christ followers – ancientand present – and all of God's creation, including the birds who were God’s mes-sengers to me on this day. I wrote down thisprayer poem that I heard Jesus whisper to me:

Don’t Worry: Live Like the Birds Don’t worry: Look at the birds; Trust my

Father as they do, feeding each day fromhis hand.

Don’t worry: Listen to the birds; Rest inmy Word as they do, sitting quietly andalone on the branch.

Don’t worry: Learnfrom the birds; Sing withmy angels as they do,harmonizing with thechoruses of heaven.

Don’t worry: Live likethe birds; Fly with mySpirit as they do, re-sponding to the currentsof my breath.

Don’t worry: Love likethe birds; Gather with myfriends as they do, travel-ing in formation as myflock.

COMMUNITY MISSIONS

“Monday Meals” Now Serving. Our Crystal Cathedral volunteers began

our weekly freelunch program,“Monday Meals,”for the homelessand the needy of our community on Nov. 30.

The new program was the idea of our Di-recting Leader of Ministries & Mission, Dr.Sheila Schuller Coleman. Sheila choseDonna Sivachenko, a ministering elder andactive volunteer, to head the program.Though our church has participated once amonth in feeding the poor for the past 20years at Friends Church in Garden Grove,Sheila believed that it was time to take thisoutreach a step further, especially in light ofthe current economic downturn.

“Sheila announced during a group meet-ing her desire to develop a program as anoutreach to feed the homeless and needy inthis area,” Donna said. “We felt, given thegrowing need in our community, that weneeded to offer weekly meals on our cam-

pus to anyone on the street who is hungryand in need.”

Fully funded and run by volunteers, morethan 100 stepping forward to sign up for this

program. “We raisethe money, we buythe food, and weserve it,” said Donna.“We did not want the

church to spend any money for this pro-gram.”

If you desire to serve those in need in ourcommunity, contact Bonnie Balloch at 714-971-4039 or [email protected] volunteer for the preparation team, serveteam and/or clean up team.
