Crow Times February, 2017 2

The early 20th century was a period of rapid technological change. In 40 years, the world saw changes that had not happened over the previous four centuries. That was the period when the telephone, the motorcar and, most notably, photography was born. Since photography replaced realistic painting with perspective, an abstract form of painting called Cubism was created which is the inspiration for our cover this month.

Even now, the world around us is changing rapidly and it behobes to accept and adapt to these changes. Likewise in BGC, in just the last few years we’ve seen the advent of the smart membership card, a very grand club house, unprecedented demand for membership and lastly, uninterrupted water to ensure green fairways through the year. Let’s be thankful for all the good things that come our way as we welcome the summer of 2017.

Rules of Golf

Question on the rules? If I play a ball that is not mine what are the consequences in the rules of golf?

This answer is covered under rule 15-3.

maTCH PLayIf a player makes a stroke at a wrong ball he loses the hole, if the wrong ball belongs to another player, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.

If a player or opponent exchange balls during the play of a hole, the first to make a stroke at the wrong ball loses the hole. When this cannot be determined, the hole must be played out with the balls exchanged.

sTroKe PLayIf a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes, the competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the rules. If he fails to correct his mistake before making a stroke

on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, fails to declare his intention to correct his mistake before leaving the putting green, he is disqualified.

exceptionThere is no penalty if a competitor makes a stroke at a wrong ball that is moving in water in a water hazard, any strokes made at a wrong ball moving in water in a water hazard do not count in the competitors score. In match play the player must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the rules.

Key takeaway from this ruleIt is always advisable to make a distinctive mark on your ball, to assist you identify it on and off the fairway, as at most times there are other players on the course with similar make of ball and number.

(The above is contributed by Mr. Jude Lobo our in-house referee and rules official based on an actual enquiry by a member)

competition in 50mts. breast stroke event. Her sister Malavika Gubbi was in the water polo team and that attracted Varshini to get interested in water polo. She was soon to find out that a water polo match goes on for 45 minutes to an hour and is a very tough and rough sport. Nevertheless, she enjoyed water polo and has many accomplishments under her belt. She participated for the first time, in the Junior Nationals in 2005 held at Kolkata in which the Karnataka team won the Bronze medal. In 2007, she was a part of the Indian team that participated in the Asian Age Group Championship held at Indonesia and secured the Bronze medal for the country. Captaining the state team in 2009, Karnataka won the gold medal after 6 years at the Junior Nationals. She was also chosen as the captain for the India team in 2009 when the team again won the bronze medal at the Asian Age Group Championship held at Tokyo.

In 2010, she participated in the Asian Games, Guangzhou, China and in 2012 at the Asian Swimming Championship at Dubai.

Varshini has participated and also won many medals at the Junior and Senior Nationals from 2005 till date.

Varshini muses that being a part of the team sport has made her a better person and taught her to be disciplined, manage her time well, be practical and not fussy, learn to cope with highs & lows and made her into an extrovert.

Varshini is a qualified swimming teacher having being certified in AUSTSWIM TSW, competitive strokes and infant swimming as well as ASCA (American Swimming Coaches Association) Level 3. Swimming is her passion and her career.
