Stitching the designThe design is stitched in the centre of the cushion front then covered piping is attached round the edge when you make up the cushion. Fold the evenweave in half both ways to find the centre and start stitching at this point. There are no backstitch details in this design because all of the shading and detail is achieved using cross stitch in close shades of stranded cotton. So, do

take time to identify each colour on the key to ensure you stitch correctly. The cross stitch is worked in two strands over two threads of the fabric. The shaded area beneath the vase is worked in half cross stitch using two strands of pale lilac. Make sure that you work all these half crosses in the same direction so that they look even.

Adding the detailsWhen you have finished all of the cross stitch you can add the French knots, which are used to represent the ends of the stamens on the anemones. These are worked using one strand

of very light petrol blue.

Stitch Collection comes through my letterbox. When I opened this one, I found that it contained two of my favourite things for stitching. Firstly, I love to stitch anything to do with flowers, and secondly, I love stitching on evenweave. The anemones were very realistic when stitched and the colours were beautiful. There wasn’t any backstitching, so when I did the fractional stitches, I thought about the design in 3D and then decided which colour should be most dominant. I’d make that the three-quarter stitch and the other colour the quarter stitch.”

Welcome to our new redesigned Chart of the Month section! Each issue we’ll bring you one special design which we think is really worth shouting about. With so many fantastic projects in this the issue, it was a very tough decision to make, but this month we’ve chosen to wax lyrical about Lesley Teare’s beautiful anemones. They’re so bright and cheerful – the perfect project to wash away those winter blues!

I wanted this design to be a real splash of bright flowers to cheer us up through the winter months and help us through those post Christmas blues! With these gorgeous anemones I think Lesley has created just that. In wonderful rich reds, purples and pinks these flowers are lovely to stitch and the French knots in the centre add lifelike depth and texture. The finished piece makes a really special cushion for your home – I hope you enjoy stitching it!

Stitch a flower for every month with this beautiful floral sampler by Lesley Teare

Featuring a delicate bloom for every month,

including a snowdrop, bluebell, anemone

and chrysanthemum, this wonderful floral sampler

is the perfect project for any gardening or flower

enthusiast. Helping you to keep track of what’s in

bloom throughout the year, it’s both beautiful and

practical. We love the vibrant colours and the

swirled backstitched lettering, which both stand

out wonderfully against the natural linen fabric.

each flower has been designed in a very stylised

Stitching the designFold your fabric in half both ways to find the

centre and start stitching at this point. All the

cross stitch is worked in two strands of stranded

cotton over two threads of the fabric. It’s really

important that you double check the positioning

of your stitches as some of the spacing is tricky.

Crossing off your stitches on the chart with a pen

as you go will help with this. Normally we would

suggest working all of the cross stitch before the

backstitch but it’s best to work each flower at a

time, backstitching after the cross stitch to help

with counting. Work the backstitch lettering for

each month after you have worked the flower.

When you have finished working the individual

flower motifs, stitch the floral border and lines

around them.

Adding the detailsAll the backstitch details on the flowers are

worked in one strand of stranded cotton over two

threads of the linen fabric. Each backstitch colour

is represented on the chart by differently coloured

lines. The names of the months are worked in

backstitch using two strands of very dark bluebell.

Making up the hanging1. When you have finished working the design cut

the stitched linen to 16x13in (41x33cm) with

the design placed centrally widthwise and 1¾in

(4.5cm) up from the lower edge.

2. Turn all four sides of the linen under ½in

(1.5cm) and press. Repeat this with the cotton

backing fabric.

Shopping list...

3. Now place the linen right side down, then place

the interlining centrally on top with the linen

edges folded on top of it. Stitch the interlining

to the turned over linen making sure your

stitches can’t be seen from the front.

4. Place the lining fabric right sides up, on top,

making sure the folded-under sides meet up.

5. Tuck the length of lead weight tape inside the

fold of the lower edge of the lining and work a

few stitches to hold it in place at either end.

6. Slip stitch the lining into place all around.

7. Turn the top edge of the linen 1in (2.5cm) to the

back of the hanging and slip stitch into place to

make a casing for the dowel.

Finishing off

1. Take the wooden pole off the hanger and slip it

through the casing at the back of the hanging.

2. Push the ends of the wire hanger back through

the holes in the wooden pole to complete.

different sizes and styles. They start at just 1in (2.5cm)

wide for £1.09 and go up to 12in (30cm) wide for £5.70.

Using… lead weight tapeFor a hanging this big, you should weigh down the lower

edge so that it hangs properly. Lead weight tape is perfect

for this. Used in blind making to hold the blinds down, lead

weight tape is simply a narrow tube of fabric with

small pieces of lead inside. There are gaps

between each lead piece to

make it flexible but heavy,

and it can be bought in

different weights

depending on the use.

You’ll find it in curtain

fabric shops or online

for around £1 a metre.

More nursery designs…

Stitching the designFold your fabric in half both ways and start

stitching from this point. You will find it easier if

you concentrate on working one element at a

time starting from the centre and working

outwards. Finish by working the inner and outer

borders. The cross stitch for the main design of

Humpty on the wall and the bushes behind him

and grass and flowers in front is worked in two

strands over one thread of the aida fabric.

The remainder of the stitching is worked in a

mixture of cross stitch in one strand and half

cross stitch in one or two strands to give the

design perspective. The grass, path and castle

directly behind Humpty is worked in cross stitch

using one strand. The sky is worked in half cross

stitch: one strand for the purple, light blue and

very light blue and two strands for the top

section of light blue sky. Make sure you refer

carefully to the chart to ensure you use the

correct stitches and numbers of strands to give

depth to your finished design.

Adding the detailsWhen you have finished all of the cross stitch you

can add the backstitch and long stitch outlines

and details. These are all worked in one strand of

stranded cotton: light red for the flowers and

mouth; dark green for the hedge and stems;

dark grey for the wall, castle and guards; very

that your knots are nice and tight so they lie

snugly on top of the cross stitch.
