Old Stone Food Pantry
Volunteers needed to serve at Old Stone Church Food Pantry on Thursdays
from 9:30 to 12. Tasks include packing food bags, stocking shelves, greeting
guests and carry out of bags. Work the entire shift or what you can.
Currently the Pantry is serving an average of 60+ families each week as it
serves the residents of Rockton, Roscoe, Shirland, Harrison, and South
Beloit. The Pantry is located inside the church at 101 East Union Street in
Rockton. Please contact Duke Sims at 815-298-1773 if you have any questions.
Social Concerns Committee Projects
“God’s work, Our hands” Please join this ELCA church wide
celebration of caring: “One church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.”
We will be donating items and assembling “Blessings in a Bag” for our service project. Area shelters and
the Synod office give a gallon Ziploc baggie filled with essentials to homeless people. (For example: I
would have handed a bag out to the homeless person I noticed at a Beloit area McDonalds.)
Step 1. Bring donated items to a drop off box in the narthex beginning in August. Items needed are:
warm socks, hand warmer packet, scarf, chapstick, chewing gum, granola bars,
crackers & cheese or peanut butter packets, beef jerky, Capri sun drink pouch-
es, McDonald’s $5 gift card, packet of multipurpose wipes. Choose one or a few
items and bring as many as you can.
Step 2. Join us during community time on September 24th to fill the bags.
Ledgewood School needs volunteers who will read and listen to 1st grade students. If you can share
½ hour per week for the semester or year, you could be the consistent mentor and
friend that a child needs. The reading specialist will provide initial guidance as
we learn how to work with these students. This program will begin in October on
a day and time according to your mutual schedule. Please consider sharing your
love of reading in this intergenerational project. Further information- contact
Ann Chamberlain, (815-289-2026) Social Concerns.
Attention Parents! Cross and Crown Sunday
School will be handing out Bibles to students on
Sunday, October 1st! 3 and 4 year olds will be
receiving the SPARK story Bible. This Bible
has great pictures and readable stories for
parents to help early learners. 3rd and 4th
graders will be getting the Connect NRSV
Bible. This Bible is easy enough for Elementary readers to
use but will grow with them through Confirmation. Please
let us know ahead of time so we can put your child’s name in
the book. Call the church office at 815-623-6853.
Quilters will be meeting twice in
September and most months after.
Check the church calendar and
Sunday Bulletins. In September, we
are meeting September 12th and the
26th. We start around 10am, eat
lunch here and finish up about
2pm.We provide the coffee and
usually a dessert, bring your own
lunch. No experience
needed, its a great
time for fun and
fellowship. We donate
the quilts to local
charities.

Preschool Pitter Patter
The 2017-2018 school year is here! Julia Leslie is our new Preschool
Director/Teacher and Mary Dempsey is on staff as our Bookkeeper and Classroom
Aide. A BIG thank you to Warren Jacobs for his help and support. Also, a special
thank you to Pastor Megan, Mary Dempsey, preschool parents and the preschool board for their
dedicated work through the summer.
The classroom is being decorated and two tricycles have been ordered. There are 20 children in the
morning session and 7 children in the afternoon session. Volunteers are needed to join the preschool
board. We are also need qualified subs to teach or assist in the classroom. A special thanks to Dean
Snowden, Tim Anderson and Violet Bane for their help in painting the classroom! Please contact
Pastor Megan or any board member if interested in volunteering. Let the school year begin!
The preschool board is happy to welcome Julia Leslie as the new Director. Julia has over
8 years of experience in early childhood education. She is excited to get started and has
lots of great ideas on how to make our program grow. Julia and her husband Dave along
with their four children, Timmy, Reyde, Wyatt, and Jessyka are active members of Cross
and Crown. Join us in congratulating Julia on her appointment!
Bell Choir rehearsals
will begin on Thursday,
September 7 at 5:30 pm.
We are always looking for
new members. The ability to read music is
helpful but not necessary. If anyone is in-
terested in joining please contact the Bell
Choir Director, Matt Guschl, at (217) 417-
5952 or [email protected].
Blood pressure
screening will resume
in September, on the
17th. Following months
blood pressure screening
will be offered on the 3rd Sunday in one of
the classrooms during community time.

Anniversary Blessings
Carpenter's Place meal prep and serving will be September 22nd. This is a great opportunity to share your food and or mealtime by serving the guests who comes to Carpenter's Place for support of body and soul. The signup sheet goes around on Sunday during the service.
Meet with people of various faiths. This is a chance
to increase your understanding of people who may
have different beliefs than yours, but may also have
some very similar beliefs. We will meet in small
groups of people from different faiths to discuss a question, then move to another group.
This activity is sponsored by the Rockford Interfaith Council, which has been active in
Rockford for 25 years.
