REPORT
1 Introduction
Associated Engineering (AE), supported by Iredale Group Architecture, Donald Luxton Associates
and PBA Consulting Engineers, was retained by the City of Vancouverto complete the rehabilitation
and retrofit design of the Burrard Street Bridge. The scope of this design assignment includes several
proposed modifications that have the potential to impact the visual aesthetic and heritage character of the
bridge, particularly at the bridge deck level. This report presents the design concepts considered as well as
our recommendations for the proposed deck level rehabilitation and modifications.
The bridge design elements being considered within this report are:
x Improved vehicle barrier.x Sidewalk fence rehabilitation.x Suicide deterrent barriers.x Cycle facility upgrades.x Functional street lighting.x Restoration of pedestrian scale lighting.x Celebratory lighting.x Sidewalk rehabilitation.

2.1 VEHICLE BARRIERS
Currently the vehicle containment on the Burrard Street Bridge is provided by the existing curbs and to a
lesser extent by the concrete fence at the edge of the sidewalk. A review of the existing bridge traffic
levels, speed limits, and alignment against the requirements of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code(CHBDC) requires a Performance Level 2 (PL-2) barrier for the bridge.

2.4 CYCLE FACILITY UPGRADES
The existing bike lanes are located in the curb lane of the bridge deck for southbound traffic and on the eas
sidewalk for northbound traffic. Continuous precast concrete barriers have been placed to separate the
bike lanes from vehicle traffic. This configuration was implemented at the outset of the bike lane trial.

2.6 HERITAGE AND CELEBRATORY LIGHTING
In 2005, PBA completed a heritage lighting study and documented its findings and recommendations in a
report entitled Burrard Bridge Heritage Lighting Study. PBA then updated the Celebratory and Heritage
Lighting Design concept drawings to illustrate the decorative lighting design concept for the Burrard Street
Bridge. The intent of the decorative lighting is to accentuate the architectural features of the bridge and
provide a gateway to Downtown Vancouver by land, or to False Creek by water.
In accordance with the study recommendations the heritage and celebratory lighting fixtures on the bridge
will be LED with dimming and colour-changing capabilities. This will allow the lighting to be customizable
on-site to achieve the desired lighting effect. It will also allow for the option of programmed lighting themes
and displays for special events.
The decorative lighting on the bridge can be broken down into two sections, namely heritage lighting and
celebratory lighting. Heritage lighting includes all light fixtures that were installed on the bridge when it was
constructed in the 1930s. Celebratory lighting includes all new lighting intended to highlight the bridge
architecture and emphasize the desired Road Gate and Sea Gate concepts.
As discussed in the Burrard Bridge Heritage Lighting Study report, it is intended that all of the original light
fixtures on the bridge be replicated and installed as they were when the bridge was built. The original and
replicated fixtures that comprise the Heritage lighting are:

1 IntroductionAssociated Engineering (AE) was retained by the City of Vancouver to prepare the retrofit andrehabilitation design for the Burrard Street Bridge. As part of that assignment, we investigateddesign alternatives for the rehabilitation of the existing pedestrian fence. The following reportsummarizes the alternatives considered and our recommendations. The Burrard Street Bridge is one of the City's landmarks and is considered a civic icon. The bridgeis also listed on the City's Heritage Register. The details of the existing fence on the exterior of thesidewalk have been identified as one of the heritage character defining elements.

1 General Information
Associated Engineering (AE) was retained by the City of Vancouverto complete the retrofit and
rehabilitation design of the Burrard Street Bridge. As part of that assignment, we have completed
a feasibility study for widening the north end of the concrete approach spans to accommodate a
north bound bike lane on the bridge deck plus a traffic queue due to turning traffic.
The Burrard Street Bridge, shown in Figure 1-1, consists of steel truss main spans and concrete
approach spans.
