What is the Cross Media Subcommittee?

•  The committee was formed to investigate the use of PDF in new media (smart phones, tablets, etc) to determine if the GWG should create a series of specifications for the usage of PDF in these media.

Goals of the Cross Media SC

•  Figure out if the GWG should get involved specifications for display media;

•  If so, get a sense what’s going on in the publishing world and the problems arising from the lack of PDF specifications for each output channel;

•  To analyze the current Cross Media Workflows to define standards and best practices for Cross Media workflows

Goals of the Cross Media SC

•  Can we accomplish the same results for digital publishing workflows as we accomplished in printed workflows;

•  Every publisher is trying to figure this out on their own.

•  Decide how far to go. We should look beyond PDF: HTML5, XML, e-Pub, NextPub, Ofip, and so on…

•  Do not re-invent the wheel but collaborate with others bv. IDEAlliance

Real World Examples: •  PDF readers on mobile devices do not display the

same PDF image identically −  Not only for Static but also for dynamic content −  (Didier Haazen VIGC testing results)

Real World Examples: •  CMYK print workflows not flexible enough for

repurposing of content into other output channel −  Drawings in CMYK −  Export to PNG −  Which settings should be used to maintain the best color

Real World Examples •  Visible (white) hairlines •  Build up speed of Print PDF is not optimal (to

much anchor points) = optimization PDF needed.

•  25 respondents •  18 respondents said they are repurposing

content with a dedicated PDF •  Of those repurposing content, ≈ 50%

said they had problems and the other 50% said no issues

•  Authoring tools run the gamut from Adobe (Indesign) to Woodwing Puzzleflow and even custom software.

Cross Media Survey Results

•  12 Respondents felt PDF was not the right format for cross media publishing

•  15 respondents said they do not use metadata in the PDF

•  14 respondents said there is no need for a cross media job ticket

•  8 respondents mentioned the SC should be involved in other areas like XML & ePub, NextPub, Ofib, …

Relaunch the Survey

•  25 respondents mainly from Europe, only 1 from the USA

•  Not a large enough sample to gauge trends and issues

•  Specifically target Nord America, then compare with European data to see if the continents are focusing on the same issues.
