NAPLAN—Years 3 & 5 Last week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) students in Years 3 and 5 sat the NAPLAN tests for reading, writing, language conventions (spelling & grammar) and numer-acy. The students were asked by their teachers to try their best. The data collected will help teachers to vali-date what, in most cases, they already know about stu-dents from their ongoing formative and summative as-sessments. NAPLAN is not designed to measure all the things a school does to ensure students are progress-ing, are creative, are resilient, are physically active and are being prepared for the future as life long learners. Our school once again took part in the ‘pencil/paper’ (hard copy) version of the test, which allowed us to avoid any online issues which other schools experi-enced.

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME

National simultaneous story time is held annual-ly. Every year a picture book, written and illus-trated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country the same day. It’s 19th year running and it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and litera-cy, using an Australian children's book. 2018 was the biggest and most successful NSS to date, with over 1,062,230 participants at over 8,255 locations. 2019 will be bigger and better!

P&C thankyou It’s been a busy time for our P&C with two recent elections and Mothers’ Day. A big thank you to all those P&C volunteers who assisted with the Mother’s Day stall, whether it be through purchasing, sorting, wrap-ping, setting up the stall or selling on the day. It was a great success, with many positive comments received about the quality of the presents available for students to choose from. The children who purchased gifts were very excited about taking them home for Mum!

The Federal Election polling day BBQ and cake stall was another long day from 7.30am set –up through to pack up around 3.00pm. Thank you to all those P&C executive members and volunteers who gave up their time to help on the day or who donated baked goods. There were certainly long queues of voters to keep fed during the day!

The school is always appreciative of the monetary support we receive from the P&C. We will talk further at the next meeting about short and long term projects to assign P&C funds to.

School Statement payments for Term 2—Please pay now! Thank you to those families who promptly paid their Term 2 account statements. It certainly helps with our budgeting process. A number of the activities are underway or have been completed so we need to ensure payments are made so that we can make payments to the necessary suppliers or venues. Payments can be made with cash or EFTPOS at the Office or through the on-line system (link below) https://newington-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ Next week we have the Yrs 3-6 athletics carnival—so we need the payments made to cover the bus and venue hire costs.

Updated mobile phone and other devices policy Our student mobile phone policy has been reviewed and updated and will be emailed to the community early next week. Our policy is still that parents should notify the school in writing if their child brings a phone to school. The phone is turned off in the student’s bag during the school day and whilst on the school grounds. We have updated these arrangements to include watches, sometimes referred to as ’smart watches’ as many brands of watches also act as telephones and/ or cameras. If a child is wearing such a watch, then it must be switched to “School or class’ mode whereby during school hours the phone and camera functions are disabled. This will help to ensure learning time is not disrupted and that the safety and wellbeing of all students can be maintained.

Visitors to school We request that any person visiting our school grounds during the school day goes to the Admin Office first to sign in and collect a visitor badge or a classroom helper badge if helping in a classroom. This allows us to keep track of people on our school grounds. Of course, those here prior to 8.55am or from around 2.45pm to pick up children after school or attending Wednesday assemblies, need not sign the visitors book. Visitors on our site during the school day should display our visitor badges. If the visitor is a maintenance worker or contractor, they will display their relevant identification badge.

Parking issues Unfortunately we are not unlike other schools in that parking and traffic issues do arise at both ends of the school day. As principal I have no authority over how other adults drive or park their vehicles. All schools can do is keep highlighting what the traffic and parking rules are and that our expectation is that everyone will follow them to ensure the safety of ALL children is considered. Parramatta City Council (PCC) Parking Rangers do patrol our school at different times and they can be contacted through PCC on 9806 5050. This week’s reminder: Please do not park across the driveways of our neighbours.

Staffing update The vacant School Administration Officer position in our school office is currently being advertised and will be filled through a Merit Se-lection process.

ICAS TESTING ICAS testing this year has moved away from paper testing to online testing where stu-dents will complete tests on a device. This has made it extremely difficult for us to admin-ister logistically as we have upwards of 250 students who sit the English and Maths tests each year. As a school, we have decided that we will conduct the maths online test this year for Years 2-6 in Term 3 on our school devices. The tests will run in Week 9 Term 3 –Monday 16th – Thursday 19th September. The expression of interest notes have been returned to school and teachers are coordinating the process for Term 3.
