A 13-year-old resident of Bountiful is in stable condition at Calgary’s Foothills Medical Centre after being rescued in the dark of night early on Friday.

Leroy Palmer sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and was evacuated via Creston and Cranbook airports after spending about 12 hours at an altitude esti-mated at 4,600 metres by RCMP Const. Morgan Littlejohn.

Palmer was apparently climbing the steep cliffs of Mount Thompson when he lost his footing and slid or fell about 100 metres before coming to rest in a difficult area to access.

“Fortunately, Leroy’s brother was able to locate him, and then he sent out cellphone photos of the location, which aided search and rescue technicians in reaching the injured boy,” Littlejohn said on Monday.

Creston RCMP and Creston Valley Search and Rescue personnel were aided by a Canadian Forces team from Comox, which arrived in a helicopter and fixed wing air-craft.

“The search was complicated by the fact that some males — adults and teens — from the Bountiful community had gone up the mountain on their own in an attempt to locate the boy,” Littlejohn said.

The saffron-coloured robes of Bhaktimarga Swami make him a highly visible sight as he strides along highways in his fourth cross-Canada walk.

The Hare Krishna monk passed through Creston on the weekend, but returned by car from the west side of Kootenay Pass to make a presentation at the Creston Valley Yoga Studio. He then visited the Advance office to continue a discussion from 2006, when he was profiled on his third walk across Canada.

“I’ve done a lot more walking since then,” he laughed. “I’ve walked in Israel, Ireland, Guyana, Trinidad and even Mauritius.”

Swami made his first “walking meditation” trip across Canada in 1996, walking westward. In 2003, he set out from Cape Spear, N.L., to com-plete the circle. When he isn’t walking or travel-ling the world, he lives as a celibate, monastic monk n Markham, Ont., promoting the Hare Krishna message through his involvement with youth and “morality theatre”.

“I was trying to understand why I barely even remember Creston,” he said on Monday. “Then I realized that everything looks different because I arrived from a different direction.”

In 2006, he arrived from the west along Highway 3A and on this trip he came from the east.

A year after several public meetings were held to discuss infrastructure costs for new developments, Creston town council is consider-ing changes to the development cost charge (DCC) bylaw.

The issue was discussed at the June 3 commit-tee of the whole meeting at Creston Town Hall, where engineering manager Colin Farynowski presented an overview of the current bylaw and possible changes.

“The question we always ask ourselves in plan-ning for projects is, ‘Who benefits?’ ” he said. “We then try to assign a cost share on that basis.”

A new sewer line installed to accommodate a new subdivision, for example, might also benefit existing homes and businesses in the neighbourhood.

Development cost charges are designed to offset actual costs over a specific time period, typically 10-15 years.

“We don’t want to discourage commercial development with uncompetitive DCCs,” said Coun. Wesly Graham.

“Ideally it should be user pay,” Coun. Judy Gadicke said, “but a 50-50 split with existing taxpayers is probably OK.”

“DCCs should be fair and equitable, and changes should be put in place as soon as possi-ble,” said Coun. Joanna Wilson. “Then they can be tweaked if needed when the official commu-nity plan is updated (in two years).”

Mayor Ron Toyota said the town has the abil-ity to tweak costs for specific projects if it wants to promote development.

Another committee of the whole meeting was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on June 17th to continue the discussion.

Committee Briefs•Toyota raised the issue of herbicide spraying

in town parks. He said he had received a number of complaints after a contractor from the Okanagan was hired to spray Nufarm Trillion on lawns in Burns Park, Centennial Park and Millennium Park.

The spray is designed to control broadleaf weeds in lawns and is approved by Health Canada, Toyota said. It is considered harmless to humans shortly after application.

The issue was referred for discussion to the next council meeting and further information was posted on the town website.

•Also discussed was the controversy about the removal of pink bags placed over parking meters to promote free two-hour parking on Canyon Street. A plan by town staff to place metal signs on top of parking meter posts was deemed dangerous and council concluded that a sticker on existing posts would be more suitable.

•Council requested that staff report on the options to install a third columbarium at the cemetery, as the second one has only a few spaces left. Other columbarium options will also be considered.

From page 1Highway 3 to Kootenay Pass, a daunting trip

for most, has been pure pleasure, he said. Early on Monday he was walking westward and downhill from the road’s highest point.

“But I think I prefer walking uphill,” he said. On his Canadian walks, Swami travels with

supporters who transport him to engagements in schools, yoga centres and even seniors’ cen-tres when he isn’t walking. Each morning he returns to walking, picking up where he left off the previous day. For the most part, he sleeps in a tent, only occasionally taking up an offer to stay in a house.

If his travels in Canada are well planned and organized, he takes a more spur of the moment attitude in other countries.

“In Israel, where I was speaking in Jerusalem, I asked a man, ‘Can you show me a map?’ I looked at it and said, ‘I think that’s do-able. Why don’t we start out tomorrow?’

“I think going outside your comfort zone is important.”

Swami remembers the Crowsnest Highway as being “a nice experience last time.”

“I love to go into smaller communities.”He makes a surprising observation about

changes he has noticed in his four walks across Earth’s second-largest country.

“The world has changed. People are more open-minded.”

Being accosted along the route by what he describes as “redneck attitudes” has become a rarity, he said. Truckers stop to hand off contain-ers of fruit juice, drivers arrive with baskets of fruit and others are just curious about a man wearing saffron colours.

“I get to talk about balance, and that’s what walking offers us,” he said. “We don’t think con-sciously about it, but when we walk and our right arm goes up, so does our left leg — it cre-ates a sense of balance that is often missing in our day to day lives.”

Pilgrimages, he said, are a part of human his-tory that he is happy to help continue.

And, if he is continually battered by the winds created as cars and trucks speed past, Swami takes joy from his time to meditate and chant as he strides along the roadside.

“If you look at our ancestry, we have a his-tory of roaming,” he said, heading out the door.

After six months of discus-sion, the final Community Conversations event on June 4 resulted in participants choosing a project for the Creston Valley: a designated bike and walking path to connect Creston, Wynndel and Erickson.

Nearly 250 attended the Kootenay Employment Services (KES) event to take part in three rounds of voting, after about 300 took part in the monthly sessions.

“We’ll be drawing from that database to see who can help out with this project,” said Eden Yesh, who runs the program and is manager of KES’s Invermere branch.

An initial round of voting list-ed 300 potential projects, from which participants last week

selected their first, second and third choices in several subcate-gories, including recreation, health, education and business. From there, using software developed by KES staff, the list was narrowed to 81 options, and then, after a second round of vot-ing, to nine.

Among the top nine were “More doctors and a walk-in clinic”, “Co-operative housing project”, “Value-added cannery and packaging for local fruits and vegetables” and “Strategy to become an organic and sustain-able capital in Canada.”

The goal now, Yesh said, is to create a steering committee and a realistic timeline and mile-stones for the trail project, hope-fully within six to 12 months.

With nearly 300 potential projects that didn’t make the cut, there will be an opportunity next month for champions of those

ideas to give a 10-minute presen-tation to funders on July 17. To be slotted in, a form can be filled out at ourcommunityconversa-tions.com/panelprojects.

And the hope is that the other top choices can be considered at some point in the future.

“These will be valuable to community development over next couple of years,” said Yesh.

The potential Erickson-Creston-Wynndel trail was the only project of its type that made it to the top nine, but it was one of several on the initial list, which was a good sign, accord-ing to Trails for the Creston Valley Society president Mary Jayne Blackmore.

“It shows that the focus of the community is on developing rec-reation and a healthy lifestyle,” she said. “We were excited to see a lot of our top projects in the short list.”

Sixteen singers will be taking the stage at the Prince Charles Theatre on Saturday to compete for the top spot in the Kootenays’ Best Singer contest, which will name the third annual regional winner.

This year, a celebrity judge will among three taking on the challenge of selecting the best singers — Duane Steele, who has been nominated for Juno Awards and multiple Canadian Country Music Awards, win-ning CCMAs for vocal collabo-ration (1997) and independent male artist (2001).

“I’ve known him since I was a kid,” said producer Vern Gorham, who started the con-test series in Creston in 2010. “He’s a great singer-songwriter. … It’s exciting to showcase tal-ent from the Kootenays in Creston, but it’s also exciting to bring a person who’s accom-plished so much in the music industry to Creston.

After hosting the regional contest in Cranbrook in 2012 and 2013, Gorham is looking forward to bringing some Kootenay talent to Creston on June 14.

“I really felt like it was time to bring the regional contest here, to my home,” said Gorham. “The Creston audi-

ence deserves to see some of the great talent I’ve enjoyed through the contest.”

This time, the top three from March Creston’s Best Singer contest — Cara Waddle, Taya Blackmore and Tamara Leavitt — will compete against the top two from Nelson’s Best Singer — Zoe Strongman and Emma Chart, as well as 11 others from the east and west Kootenays who placed first, second or third in their respective local contests last year.

In addition to the $1,000 top prize, this week’s winner will perform next year at the Kaslo Jazz Etc. Summer Music Festival; 2012 Kootenay winner Trena Spears and 2013 Creston’s Best Singer winner Victoria Bowns will perform there this summer.

Following Saturday’s contest, the action will move to the Snoring Sasquatch for an after party where Steele will perform.

“Between the contest and Duane’s performance, this will be a great evening for music lovers,” said Gorham.

The Kootenays’ Best Singer contest starts at 6 p.m. June 14; tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Combined tick-ets to the contest and after party are $25 in advance, and tickets for the after party alone are $18 in advance and $25 at the door.

From page 1The rescue efforts became

more dramatic when a service dog, Art, and his handler needed assistance in getting down from the mountain. They had arrived straight from another search effort near Castlegar before head-ing up Mount Thompson.

“We thought the dog was dead — he was so exhausted he couldn’t walk or respond to peo-ple around him,” Littlejohn said. “It was only when I put a bowl of water near his head that I real-

ized Art was still alive.”A veterinarian was called

out to treat the dog for dehy-dration and exhaustion. Its han-dler, Const. Bruce Mihalcheon, sustained a leg injury during the search.

“Creston RCMP would like to thank the members of the public who assisted in getting Const. Mihalcheon and his dog off the mountain,” Cpl. Charlotte Joa said. “It was a very difficult night for everyone involved.”

Palmer remains in Calgary, where he is being treated for multiple injuries.

It’s unclear whether a local landmark can be salvaged fol-lowing a fire overnight June 5. Someone walking by the temple at Yashodhara Ashram on Kootenay Lake’s East Shore noticed smoke coming from its domed roof at about 6:30 p.m.

No one was inside at the time. The ashram’s own emer-gency response team got hoses out and start cooling down the flames until firefighters from the Riondel and Balfour-Harrop volunteer departments arrived, along with paramedics from Riondel.

They worked throughout the night, finally extinguishing the fire after about 12 hours.

Swami Lalitananda, who teaches at the ashram, said even though the temple is still standing, it suffered major damage. “We don’t know exactly how extensive it is,” she said. “The walls are still stand-ing. The shape of the building is still there, but there’s a lot of fragile structure.”

At a minimum, the roof’s frame and arches will have to be taken down.

Although the cause is unknown, she suspects some kind of spark is to blame. It was difficult for firefighters to

get water on the flames, she added.

“The problem was that the fire itself was between two kinds of fire prevention layers — an outer roof and an inner stucco ceiling,” she said. “The flames were trapped between two impermeable coverings and there was a lot of fuel from

Crews contained the blaze so that it didn’t spread to other buildings. The ashram is still open and functioning as usual. However, Lalitananda said the temple is the “heart of the ashram”

The temple has windows and doors on each side, “symbolizing different ways to enter the sacred in ourselves through different reli-gions or paths. It’s very ecumenical. That ideal of people coming togeth-er in unity is what the temple was.”

Known as the temple of light, it was built in 1992 based on the long-held vision of the ashram’s founder, the late Swami Sivananda Radha.

“She called it her little dream,” Lalitananda said. “Ever since she was a teenager, she saw this vision of this particular shape of build-ing overlooking water with big

trees in front and this round, eight-sided dome with arches ris-ing up to a centre point and a skylight. She felt she had to mani-fest that vision.”

The ashram, a yoga retreat and study center, was founded on Walker ’s Landing Road in Kootenay Bay in 1963. The tem-ple’s foundation was laid two years later, but it took until the late 1980s for work to begin.

Lalitananda said the fire was “shocking for us” and came less than a week after hundreds of people packed the temple, includ-ing musicians from India. She expressed their “deep gratitude” to firefighters.

“That’s Swami Bhaktimarga!” I exclaimed to Angela as we approached Moyie on our drive to Calgary last Thursday morning. I’m not sure what excited me more — seeing the saffron-robed Hare Krishna for the first time in eight years or remembering his name. And how to spell it.

I didn’t stop, but when we got to Calgary I sent a message to a friend to see if Bhaktimarga Swami (I erro-neously reversed the name and title he uses) could be located. Checking his web-site and blog, I knew for certain it was him, the same man I had inter-viewed when he spent a night at an Erickson Road campground back in 2006. As we sat and chat-ted about his cross-Canada walk-ing trek, his third, I recall being in awe of this gentle and articulate man. He exudes strength, calmness and intelligence.

On Monday, I reread the story I had written about Bhaktimarga Swami and his “friend-raising” walk. More memories came flooding back, and my excitement grew when I was contacted by a member of his support team. Would I like to get together with him before the swami headed back out on the highway toward his goal of Vancouver Island?

As I read through that story I couldn’t help but smile. An issue that continues to eat away at me appeared in the first paragraph:

“Is it possible to travel across Canada in an unconventional man-ner without raising funds for a favourite cause?”

The surest sign of summer in Canada is the steady stream of walkers, runners, cyclists, unicy-

clists and rollerbladers — and the list goes on — that take to the highways, inevitably to raise funds or awareness for their favourite cause. More power to them, at

least in their quest to cover a long distance in what will almost cer-tainly be a life-changing experi-ence. But what is it that makes people crave the publicity, without which no funds will be forthcom-ing? I have the Nike attitude — just do it!

As I think back over the many stories I have done on these folks, the two interviews I remember with the greatest fondness are the ones with Bhaktimarga Swami and anoth-er fellow, last year, who was riding a horse from Northern BC to a ranch in Alberta. Apparently he is master-ful at taking unbroken horses and training them to be ride-worthy in a very short time. He didn’t seek out the publicity — I was notified by a restaurant owner — and he wasn’t looking for money. I liked him immediately.

Swami accepts contributions for his travel costs, but he doesn’t arrive with his hand out. And he loves to talk to groups of students and adults, regaling them with stories (“tales of trails”) from his walks and talking about the need to get out of our vehicles and experience the out-doors on foot. But he isn’t attempt-

ing to sign them up as Hare Krishnas.

Swami committed to his celi-bate, monastic life more than 40 years ago, and he is clearly com-

fortable in his own Crocs (he switches from good quality sneakers to Crocs part way through each day on the road. “The feet need the change in the routine, just like the rest of the body,” he told me in 2006. Now, eight years older, he’s slowed down a bit, averag-ing 35 kilometres a day where he once averaged 42

kilometres. But the determination remains as strong as ever.

“I do believe that collectively working on our inner strengths does heal a society that socially beckons for improvement,” he writes. “I leave you with these suggested courses of action to challenge what I identify as our culprit, rat-racism, our modern day crisis: More walk-ing, less squawking. More praying, less braying.”

Not bad advice even those who aren’t likely to embrace beliefs from either the East or West.

On late Monday afternoon, after a presentation at the Creston Valley Yoga Studio, Bhaktimarga Swami arrived at my office for a visit. On the eve of my 60th birth-day, I was pleased to note that my memory hadn’t dulled with time. In our half-hour chat, we covered many topics, had some laughs and swapped ideas about philosophy. It was every bit as satisfying a visit as the one I so fondly recall from eight years ago. I wish him contin-ued safety and good health on his journeys of discovery.

After taking refuge in the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha, and after vowing to live by the three pure pre-cepts — cease from harm, do only good and do good for others — Zen practitioners strive to live by 10 precepts that define thoughts, words and actions that enable us to do only good. The first of these 10 precepts is to abstain from taking life. This includes human and animal life, birds and insects, but does not include plant life. A violation of the first precepts involves five factors. First, there is a living being. Second, there is knowl-edge that the being is a living being. Third, there is the intention to kill. Fourth, the killing is carried out. Fifth, the being dies.

The Buddha taught that a disciple of the Buddha does not kill, encour-age others to kill, praise killing or rejoice at witnessing killing. He or she must not create the causes, condi-tions or methods of killing, and shall not intentionally kill any living crea-ture. Instead, as a Buddhist, he or she nurtures a mind of compassion, always devising ways to rescue and protect all beings.

This precept expresses the Zen practitioner’s intent to live compas-sionately and harmlessly. When

understood in its broadest context, not killing can also be understood as not harming the body or mind of another. Thus, physical violence and abusive behavior (which includes

physical threats, extreme displays of anger and maliciousness) are a kind of “killing”.

Of course, this is a precept that we cannot keep completely. Given the complexity of contemporary life, kill-ing or involvement with killing is unavoidable. Biological, social or political demands conflict with our intention not to take life. Unless we are vegan, we eat food and wear clothes that involve taking the lives of animals. We kill insects and rodents to prevent them from invad-ing our homes or spreading disease.

We kill in subtler ways, as well. A harsh word may instantly kill years of trust. A derisive comment may kill inspiration in another person. We

may kill a relationship by taking the other person for granted.

This precept also calls up deep questions about ethics around the issues of abortion, life support and

medically assisted suicide. In Zen centre classes, we talk about these issues and try to understand how the precept against killing affects our view of them.

Fortunately, the Buddhist precepts are not command-ments. They are more like training wheels. It is said that an enlightened being responds correctly to every situation.

Keeping the precepts is a training dis-cipline that helps us to live harmoni-ously with others while learning to actualize true kindness for all beings. The precept against killing teaches us, in all circumstances, to call up com-passion so that we choose to cultivate and encourage life and refrain from killing wherever possible.

Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, notice the places where it is necessary to take life in order to survive and if it isn’t necessary, culti-vate and encourage life where you find it.

Starting out on the Balancing Rock Trail, just off the north end of West Creston Road, was like looking at early spring in retrospect. Flowers like the glacier lily (yellow) showed only rem-nants of flower freshness and bril-

liance of fresh emergence. Spring beau-ties were spent except for a few in very shady spots along the trail. Taking their place were wild hyacinth, offi-cially know as largeflower triteleia, each individual plant sporting several crisp trumpet-shaped, sky-blue flow-ers. They were just coming out, as several hundred feet up they were, in places, still in bud. I expect they will

last a couple of weeks on these rocky slopes before they are finished. Indian paintbrush appeared frequently along the trail.

Just south of the bench, located by the ponderosa pine, the once soft pur-

ple and yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers of broomrape had a very “bleached” look, a sign of age. Its two- to three-inch stalk, bearing a sin-gle flower, is devoid of leaves or indication of using sunlight in mak-ing its own food. Through its root system it gets nourishment from

other plants, especially Indian paint-brush and Large-leaved Alum, both common on the 0.9-kilometre stretch from West Creston Road to the Balancing Rock. Depending on how fast one walks, that steep part takes about a half-hour.

The next feature on the trail is the boardwalk over a skunk cabbage- and lady fern- beautified swamp. That is

kilometre 1.75. Last year, through com-munity effort, most of the boardwalk was replaced and surfaced with metal grid to prevent slipping when the planks are wet. However, the west arm of the boardwalk leading to the Creston Mountain Trail and Holly Falls, is some-thing else. It recently collapsed. One must now cross on logs in the swamp or sidestep across on the one large log. This is a bit of a tricky crossing and even trickier if you don’t use a hiking stick or pole of some sort and the log is slippery. Watch out for nails in the old planks! (Perhaps by the time you read this, some community volunteer effort may have rectified the situation.)

The other arm of this boardwalk leads to the Fern Forest Trail, which, in 1.3 kilometres, passing the Trans Canada Trail and a trail registry box, reaches the Summit Creek highway bridge crossing. Passing under the bridge, a trail leads through Summit Creek “park” (the old picnic area of the former campground) to its entrance to the highway pullout.

To the Editor:(Open letter to B.C. Minster of

Education Peter Fassbender)I am motivated to speak out after

hearing School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) psychologist Todd Kettner’s response to the Ministry of Education’s deductions from the pay of British Columbia Teachers’ Federation mem-bers during the current lockout. He spoke eloquently about the time he actually puts in on the job. In case you think that the situation regarding a classroom teacher’s hours of work is different, I’d like to bring my perspec-tive to the statement, “We are reducing the hours of work” of BCTF members (Michael Marchbank, B.C. Public School Employers’ Association).

We all, always, work overtime. I start planning lessons, researching, thinking about how to manage the diverse needs of my students at about 7 every morning. It’s often a topic of dis-cussion with my husband over break-fast.

I teach four 80-minute classes per day and often run to confer with a col-league, do copying or find resources in the five-minute break between those classes. After going home, I sit down again at the computer. I spend a few more hours working — marking, seek-ing new resources, activities, methods, textbooks. The Ministry of Education hasn’t updated the curriculum in my teaching area since 2001. Since the world has changed since 2001, it’s up to me to take up the slack and make things meaningful and current for my students.

Maybe I could choose a new text-book to keep up with the times? Oh, I forgot: minimal budget for resourc-es. So I spend some more of my eve-ning hours, searching for used text-books in acceptable condition on eBay, trying to stretch the budget a little further. Recently, a new student joined one of my classes and the only book I had to give her was the one with the missing pages. It’s lucky for her that we’ve already passed that chapter.

Since my time-on-task everyday is about 7 a.m. to 7 or 8 p.m., it’s pretty hard to relax and sleep well at night. I, like many of my colleagues, am an insomniac. I am often kept awake by the demanding job I do and I frequent-ly seek solutions for students and class-es with complex needs from 2-4 a.m., sometimes from 3-5 a.m. Yet, all of us show up at school in the morning and put a smile on for the day. For our stu-dents.

It takes until about mid-July to get over the insomnia and sleep through the night. The insomnia begins again in late August, as I anticipate the situation to come in September. Yes, I have 10-and-a-half month insomnia. It’s on an annual schedule.

Since I can’t “turn it off” when I’m getting my usual salary, I have difficul-ty turning it off when they reduce my pay as well. Let’s examine what I have not done, that led to this deduction in pay. In my own case, I have not read memos from the principal and I have not attended two meetings. That’s all. I’m still on the job, in my classroom all day and all night at home.

I am still making plans for finishing this year’s classes on a positive note and still making plans for next year’s classes, planning for another year of doing more with less. My hours of work haven’t been reduced at all. But my pay has.

To the Editor:I read with interest the letter,

“Patient rejected by ‘avaricious’ den-tist” (May 29, page 7). A patient was unceremoniously dispatched because he did not fit the mould of doctor knows best treatment. He also was not the holder of a valid dental plan.

I, too, was recently turfed by a dif-ferent doctor but in the same town after being a patient for many years because I do not believe in routine X-rays. I am sure X-rays can be a useful tool but should only be used in circum-stances where the need is there. The patient should be allowed to make the decisions based on what he feels is nec-essary after consultation with his doc-tor. After all, they are his teeth and he should not be punished for his deci-sion. Before a patient has his coat off, they are routinely setting up the X-ray machine.

Creston is a small market and there appears to be a shortage of dentists and, more importantly, assistants to clean your teeth. These strong-arm tac-tics will likely continue until there are more clinics, more competition, and better patient awareness. People will have to start taking ownership of the treatment they receive in a dental clin-ic. The most important extraction occurring is from your wallet. For my part, I am flossing more and eating plenty of dog biscuits.

From page 7From there, one can also con-

tinue south along an old road and through the meadowlands to the bird lookout and ultimately to West Creston Road and the Balancing Rock Trail head. I think that two hours is plenty for this circle route, passing through different landscapes and scenery. Now, back to the boardwalk.

The west arm of the boardwalk, presently out of order, leads to the Creston Mountain Trail, which, beware, in several places is adja-cent to some precipitous steeps. This trail is pretty much a constant uphill with a series of switchbacks before and several series of switch-backs beyond the Holly Falls trail junction, at kilometre 3.2. Beyond this junction, each series is joined by a longer southerly leg, with the last series numbering about 31 switchbacks before reaching a lon-ger, somewhat downhill leg to the south and a lookout called End of Trail, at kilometre 4.45. This point and registry box is perhaps two-thirds the way up Creston Mountain. If one feels ambitious, the ravine to the west and up can be followed from the registry box, along a natural route on the north side, leading to the Third Ledge, a fabulous lookout from an enor-mous flat rock providing a pan-oramic view of the Creston Valley far below. The elevation gain from West Creston Road to End of Trail is, more or less, 2,100 feet. The dis-tance to the End of Trail lookout is about 4.45 km. And, this past

Sunday afternoon, I spent about two hours and 20 minutes doing it, including the short, several-min-ute spur to Holly Falls. The steep trail is in most places in good con-dition. Local volunteers have chainsawed through the windfalls and cleared limbs off the trail.

On the way up, just before reaching the boardwalk after pass-ing the Balancing Rock, I met up with a young couple who had just moved to the area. At that point we looked for calypso orchids, a.k.a. fairy slippers, which I had seen there a few days before. We didn’t find any but while I was still looking, one of the party pulled up some nice photos of the orchid on a telephone or similar device. So, if you don’t find what ever you are looking for, you can check it out on your iPod or something like that. I must say it appeared to be very handy and much easier than carry-ing a plant book along. Of course, first, one must have a name.

Back on the trail, after leaving the swamp the trail passes along a brook where I encountered three-foot fairy bells, spent trilliums, not-so-old glacier lilies and bronze bells. After one and half hours, I reached Holly Falls Trail but not after seeing the first bunches of freshly opened western blue clem-atis flowers and tiny blue flowers of blue-eyed Mary. On the short trail into the falls there were some fresh calypso orchids. Another I didn’t see down below, where early spring had passed, was twin-flowered honeysuckle (Google can help you with that one, too).

At 3:01, I reached a small look-out guarded by an unusually large

ponderosa pine. Its diameter was at least four feet. Soon I reached an elevation where it seemed I was again back in April. There was an especially large patch of fresh gla-cier lilies, giving another encore of spring. Many other gems — land-scape and scenery — were re-encountered on this jaunt. A trek isn’t so hard when you get caught up in such beautiful surroundings!

See you on the Lady Slipper Trail!

(Last time we met, I mentioned that the elevation gain from Highway 3A to the Lakeview-Arrow Creek summit’s height-of-land on the Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road, was in the ballpark of 300-400 feet. Well, it is more like 600 feet.)

(NC) Gift ideas for Father’s Day are always welcome. So if you know that your dad has a special interest, like music, here are a few options with a personal touch that won’t break the bank:

Summer Concert Tickets – We’ve all heard the same answer when asking pops what he wants for Father’s Day and as nice as “quality time with you” sounds, he would probably enjoy some QT even more when paired with his favourite tunes. There’s no short-age of classic hitmakers touring this summer with Canadian dates, including: Aerosmith with Slash, Beck, Boston with Cheap Trick, Dave Matthews Band, Billy Joel, Mötley Crüe with Alice Cooper, Alan Jackson, Rod Stewart with Santana and James Taylor so grab a pair of tickets online and treat him to a night out.

Music on the Road – It’s possible that dad already has an inac-tive SiriusXM radio installed in his vehicle so why not buy him a one year subscription to enjoy his favourites from every decade and genre? Whether he’s a classic rock kind of guy who hasn’t bought an album since 1986, a Parrothead who would rather spend his time in Margaritaville or the kind of guy that prefers fishin’ in the dark to Nitty Gritty, there’s something for him. Doesn’t have a satellite radio installed? Pick one up with an easy-to-install vehicle kit at any major retailer across Canada.

Re-live the Magic – From a Gene Simmons-signed KISS t-shirt to Lou Reed’s guitar pic, scour eBay, Etsy or local indie record stores for music memorabilia that will have dad feeling like a kid again. You may not be able to ever get him a meet-and-greet with Chuck D or Joe Strummer, but this will be the next best thing.

Wireless Luxury – For the music-lover who is a bit more tech-savvy, what about a Sonos wireless speaker system so he can enjoy his tunes in every room of the house? All controlled from one app, he can play what he wants over a dedicated wireless network, including his music library, SiriusXM Internet Radio and podcasts using his smartphone, tablet or computer. It may be the only day you all let him listen to whatever he wants, so why not make it special?

Whichever way you choose to bring some music into your dad’s life on Father’s Day, the best present you can give is enjoying it with him. So forego the usual eye roll and hunker down to hear about when music was “actually good”...you might even learn something.

Happy Father’s Day!

(NC) It’s all about remembering Dad’s favourites on Father’s Day. While everyone relaxes and enjoys the serenity of the back-yard, these ribs will be slowly cooking to mouth-watering perfec-tion.

O r a n g e - G i n g e r Baby Back Ribs

Ingredients:5 lbs baby back ribsSauce:1 cup ketchup½ cup hoisin sauce4 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp grainy mustard3 tbsp honey2 tbsp orange juice2 tbsp Asian chili sauce

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce4 cloves garlic, minced1 tbsp gingerGrated zest of an orangeSalt and pepper

Directions: Preheat bbq on medium and turn down to low. Prepare sev-eral foil envelopes and place 2 strips of ribs into each envelope, with ¼ cup of water and seal tightly. Cook for 2-2 ½ hours on low (300°F) with the lid closed. Check the thermometer on the front of the grill lid frequently and adjust the cooking temperature accordingly. This may require turning one or two burners off and cooking indirectly.

To prepare sauce: Combine all ingredients in a sauce-pan and set aside until

ribs are ready to remove from foil. Gently heat the sauce on the side burner for 10-15 minutes before using.

Carefully remove ribs from foil and place on grids. Baste generously with sauce, and grill for 10 minutes per side, leaving the lid open, turning sev-eral times, and basting with sauce after each turn.

Heat remaining sauce to a boil and then allow it to simmer for 5 -10 min-utes and serve on the side as a dipping sauce.

Come celebrate National Aboriginal Day

On June 13, 1996, the then Governor General of Canada declared June 21 to be National Aboriginal Day, a day for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit peoples to share their various cultural expressions with the rest of Canada. Celebrated annually around the time of the summer solstice, National Aboriginal Day is celebrated by Indigenous peoples across what is often referred to as “Turtle Island.” In recent years, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) has marketed the day as “an opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal people and their contributions to Canada.”

The Lower Kootenay Band and Youth Canoe Team invite you to participate in this event to mark a small portion of the Ktunaxa Ancestors’ Travel route between (Bonner’s Ferry, ID and Rykerts Canadian Border) the villages of Kootenay people prior to the imaginary line being put into place.

A Strong Voice Standing Up For You

BY CHRISTINE MUNKERUD

Dick Kalman is well known in Creston among the skiers, hikers and canoers as a giant. He proudly boasts that one winter in the not too distant past, he clocked 61 days of skiing and has recorded 14 trips up Haystack Mountain. He has hiked and canoed in the Yukon, north Saskatchewan, Bow River and Haida Gwaii.

Kalman is now over 90, and he sadly retired from his favourite sports just two years ago.

Prior to his immigration, as a young man in 1942 he was the Hungarian champion in jumping and slalom. Then in 1943, he won the junior championship in downhill, slalom, cross-country and jumping combined. Dezso Kalman left his native Hungary in June 1948 to escape from Hungarian communism. He registered in Innsbruck to work with the International Refugee Organization to come to Canada. As a refugee, he signed a contract with the option to work in the Canadian Forest Service, on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) or in a mine. Kalman chose the CPR, where he would work on the railroad changing rails from Dryden, Ont., and west.

He immigrated on a Polish ship, the S.S. Sobiesk, a 20,000-ton vessel, along with 18 other Hungarians, 40 Serbs and some Lithuanians. Upon arrival, he took out a loan of $150 to equip himself with the warm clothes, boots and more for his new job. He became a member of the “Green Gang” who all had signed a one-year contract to work on the expected expansion of Canada through the CPR.

From page 12The work was hard, but

Kalman was in good physical shape. His physical training for sports made it easier to work the long gruelling hours on the railroad.

After completing his obliga-tory agreement, he moved to Exshaw, Alta., to work for Canada Cement Co. He cleaned out the boxcars that the CPR pushed up from the track to Canada Cement. There was plenty of overtime, which enabled Kalman to quickly save enough to bring his fian-cée, Barbara, a widow, and her six-year-old daughter over to Canada in 1949.

Kalman moved back to Calgary and worked swing shift , on the biggest type 5900 steam locomotives at the CPR round-house for nearly four years, but it went out of business, forcing Kalman to move on.

In 1949, after a year of hard physical work and determina-tion, learning a new language and adapting to this young nation, he and Barbara were able to get married. Kalman began studying gas pipeline design at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and

became very proficient, quickly becoming a self-employed con-tractor. The varied situations in which he worked provided valuable experience, and he soon gained quite a reputation for his designs.

He worked briefly in an oil refinery and did fieldwork, but found the high-paying jobs were a source of family prob-lems, and decided to limit his work to no more than 100 miles away.

He built a house in Calgary and, on the advice of a Dutch colleague, he began buying land. He paid a deposit of $100 for four lots and made monthly pay-ments. He planted trees bought from a First Nations group in the area to add greater interest to his investments, which increased their value significantly.

By now the Kalmans had a daughter, sister to Barb’s first-born. The family spent the next 30 years in Calgary, hiking, ski-ing and hostelling in the Rockies. During this time, they thoroughly explored British Columbia and decided to move to Creston. Kalman designed and built his own house, and moved in in 1982.

Not too many people are aware that Kalman and his wife are accomplished artists. He and Barb decided that they

needed to have something on their walls and decided to paint their own pictures. Barb had already experimented with painting and he was good at drawing. Now they have a house of beautiful paintings depicting their favourite hiking spots. Some of the older skiers will remember Kalman’s beau-tiful maps and cover on the visitors’ book up at the ski cabin on the Kootenay Pass summit. He has sold about 20 of the best paintings, but the memories of many hikes still adorn the Kalman home.

A few years ago, when Kalman’s health required him to stop skiing alone, and with his old cohorts gone, he found several ladies to accompany him on ski or canoe trips and the group became known as Dick and the Chicks. He still reminisces about the “old days” with other ski legends like Rae Masse and Dave Armitage.

Nowadays, in their nineties, the Kalmans still walk up to Extra Foods to shop, though they now find it a bit too much to walk back, as well, and are looking at ways to solve this. Even after losing his drivers’ licence, Kalman still shows the strong spirit which brought him through hard times to find his dream in Creston.

Africa’s Unfinished Symphony is a compelling book that takes read-ers to post-Second World War Africa. Using her skills as a story-teller, longtime journalist and social activist Lucia Mann exposes the uncomfortable truths about

modern slavery, human traffick-ing and other indignities suffered at the hands of others. The novel recently won the 2014 National Indie Excellence Award for Historical Fiction.

Shortlisted for this year’s One Book One Kootenay (OBOK), Africa’s Unfinished Symphony fol-lows the life of Farida as she

leaves her traditional African life to her rebirth as Bertha, a modern day Christian, then back again to help her peo-ple adjust to their changing world. Along the way she is a victim, a survivor and a savior. Her quiet dignity chal-lenges the reader to speak up, do the right thing.

Unfortunately, the vulnerability of women and the cru-elty of their oppres-sors depicted in the novel are just as prev-alent in the real world today as they were 70 years ago.

“Anyone who thinks slavery died when America abol-ished it in the 1800s has a shock coming to them,” said Mann.

Mann grew up in South Africa, was educated and worked as a journalist in Britain, has lived and worked in the United States and now resides in Fauquier, B.C. She remains active in her cam-paign against slavery and human traffick-ing through her writ-ing and working with various media. She recently did several interviews with American broadcast-ers concerning the abduction of the Nigerian schoolgirls. She is currently engaged in talks to film her work.

Come to the Creston Valley Public Library at 7 p.m. June 26 to hear Mann talk about Africa’s Unfinished Symphony, slavery in the modern world and OBOK.

Africa’s Unfinished Symphony is one of three books shortlist-ed for OBOK, in which readers vote for the title they think all Kootenay book lovers should read. South of Elfrida, short stories by Holley Rubinsky of Kaslo, and nonfiction title Blue Collar B&B by Sparwood resident Bobby Hutchinson are also in the run-ning. Copies of all three shortlisted titles, as well as ballot boxes, are available now in Kootenay-Boundary libraries.

Mann will also read at the Sparwood Public Library at 7 p.m. June 27 and at the Trail and District Public Library at 1 p.m. July 2.

One Book, One Kootenay is an initia-tive of the Kootenay Library Federation. For more information, visit www.obok.ca.

CRESTON VALLEY GARDEN CLUB

The Creston Valley Garden Club is hosting its biannual garden tour. This year, seven beautiful gardens are on display in Creston, Wynndel and West Creston from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 21.

Tickets for a self-guided tour are $10 at Morris Flowers, the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Beltane Nursery (and at participating gardens on June 21). A bus tour to all the gardens may also be purchased for $25, at the chamber of commerce only. This ticket includes the bus ride and a light lunch at Morris Garden Centre.

Visitors should be sure to have their tickets stamped at each garden and entered in the draw box at their final garden visit.

See GARDENS, page 23

BY LLOYD MORRISMorris Garden Centre

A tree worth mentioning for the upcoming Creston Valley Garden Club’s tour is the royal paulownia, which is front and centre in the gar-den at Morris Garden Centre. I will digress some to give a brief history of the garden and tree.

The site where the garden sits was an area where we had two greenhouses in which we grew most of our own cut flowers — carnations, roses and chrysanthemums — for the flower shop downtown. The metal Quonset building contained our boiler, which heated those green-houses, and pipes ran up to the main greenhouse and sale area, heating that also.

Around 1980, we had a fire that destroyed the building and heat system, which seemed like a disaster at the time, but turned into a blessing — we quit growing that amount of flowers because heating costs were skyrocketing.

The land then evolved into a garden. The smaller pond came first, in 1995, and it seemed like a good idea to keep going, and we built a bigger pond the next year. The brewery was expanding at that time, and many truckloads of dirt were hauled in to make it what it is today.

Back to the royal paulownia. It was a tree that I first saw in Ruby Roebuck’s yard some 30-odd years earlier. She was an avid gardener, and I would deliver many loads of plants and garden-ing accessories to her home on Ninth Avenue. She brought the tree from the Coast.

There is only a handful of these trees in the valley. Some year, it gets sever dieback, as it is only borderline hardy here. Some years ago, I took a seed pod, and to my amazement, all geminated. And since the garden was there, two seedlings took centre stage. When they are in bloom, they are spectacular. The leaves are as large as dinner plates, and easy to rake up because of their size.

When you are on the garden tour, see if you cans spot the royal paulownia, or empress tree.

FULL CIRCLE

Seven years ago, the country band Full Circle was formed by Creston Valley residents Bryan Ferguson (lead vocals, guitar), Karl Sommerfeld (fiddle), Dave Furlong (lead guitar, vocals), Ken Gerding (bass, accordion) and Keith Brookfield (drums). Full Circle played numerous dances and chari-table events before releasing their first CD, Kootenay Pride, a well-received mix of original and cover songs. The CD quickly reached “Creston platinum” status, with over 300 copies sold.

In 2011, the band set out to pro-duce their second CD — a one-year project that took three years to com-plete, thereby proving that life hap-pens when you are planning some-thing else. First, Sommerfeld left the group to pursue other artistic endeavours, then a string of family illnesses and deaths took two mem-bers away for extended periods and then, life-threatening illnesses left three band members at different times fighting for their own lives in hospital. In between, the band con-tinued its busy engagement sched-ule (often with fill-in musicians). In the midst of a medical crisis, the band had even planned to call it quits — but they didn’t. Their new CD, Painter of Songs, with a cover designed by Warren Bruns, is now ready for release.

Ferguson, a semi-retired gasfit-ter and boiler tech by day, is a seasoned professional musician and a prolific writer of locally inspired songs. Painter of Songs includes 18 tracks, 13 of which are

Ferguson originals. Son of the North Country, Soldier’s Wish and Medicine Line are songs that echo the beauty of our area and how lucky we all are to be able to live in this incredible part of the world. Songs such as I Shouldn’t Matter Anymore, Your Used to Be, Low Tide and How Long address the angst of building relationships and at times seeing them slip away. The final song, Down by the Sea, is a heartfelt tribute to Ferguson’s childhood home of Cape Breton — complete with a bagpipe intro and a men’s chorus ending.

“It has been a long road but we are proud of the results,” said Ferguson. “Each member has con-tributed their musical expertise with inspiring leads, great bass and accordion and solid percussion. The album has something for everyone — fast, slow, waltz, polka, easy lis-tening, soft rock, ballads. Besides my songs, we have added some of our favourite cover tunes from art-ists like Johnny Cash, John Prine and Rodney Crowell.”

All songs have been performed locally for appreciative audiences and will be performed again as part of a true celebration of life CD release party at 8 p.m. June 20 at the Snoring Sasquatch. The band appre-ciates the patience and never end-ing support of area residents, the Community of Creston Arts Council, the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Columbia Basin Trust.

Tickets are $12 in advance, avail-able at Black Bear Books or Kingfisher Used Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.
