For anyone who hasn’t heard the St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church choir or the church’s two organs, Sunday’s concert is sure to be a treat, with choral and instrumental music, as well as a few sing-alongs.

“All the groups I conduct have to do concerts,” said con-ductor Eric Johnson.

The seven singers will be joined by five of their six rotat-ing accompanists — Joanna Wilson, Lorraine Smith, Lorraine Doeleman, Patricia Robinson and Tom Reid (Anita Stushnoff was unavailable for the concert) — as well as Brenda Draper on flute and Poul Christensen on trumpet, in a variety of spiritual music.

“The choir will sing anthems that are favourites of theirs,” said Johnson, who has taken over for his wife and longtime choir

director, Lynn. “She purchased a lot of very challenging music. It’s not like we’re just singing hymns. We’re doing music as challeng-ing as any group in town.

“We will also be doing some more folksy things. We’ll be doing, believe it or not, Hank Williams’ ‘I Saw the Light.’ ”

The Williams tune will be one of the sing-along numbers, which will be interspersed throughout the program.

The concert is a fundraiser for maintenance and tuning of the church’s pipe organ, which is about 115 years old. The church recently spent about $800 on it, but more work is required to keep it in working order.

“I think of the organ as the musical equivalent of a steam engine,” said Johnson. “It is basi-cally simple but is a technology several centuries old with some ‘modern’ improvments.”

It was originally placed in the First Presbyterian Church in

Nelson around 1900, and moved about 60 years later to the Fairview United Church. When the Baptist Church bought that church in 1998, the pipe organ was headed for the dump before St. Stephen’s saved it.

“Bruce Harny, the accom-panist at the time and an organ specialist himself, arranged for the organ to be disassembled and moved to the St. Stephen’s church here in Creston,” said Johnson.

Preserving the instrument is a priority for the church, and Johnson is pleased that the Valentine’s Day concert will offer the audience a chance to hear it, as well as the choir, per-forming for the first time out-side of church services.

“Even though it’s a small group, they sing very well,” Johnson said. “And they’ll enjoy actually strutting their stuff.”

Admission to the 3 p.m. Feb. 14 concert is by donation.

The West Kootenay regional director for the BC Search and Rescue Association is delighted the provincial government is injecting $10 million into ground search and rescue services.

“This is a good news story for [member] groups and volunteers around the entire province,” Chris Armstrong said in a news release. “The ground search and rescue

community is very grateful for this meaningful funding.”

In late January, the province announced the one-time funding to “help bolster training, adminis-trative support and equipment renewals.”

The investment is on top of the $6.3 million the government already provides each year to cover ground search and rescue operational costs for deployment, training, equip-ment, and insurance.

Eighty groups exist in BC, including Nelson Search and Rescue and several others in West Kootenay.

“This is a very posi-tive step,” Armstrong said. “First steps will be to receive the funds, develop a solid plan, look at a needs assessment with our partner agencies and look at how these funds can have the greatest impact for ground search and rescue services around the province, includ-ing prevention.”

Armstrong said the BC Search and Rescue Association laid the foundation for the money when it pre-sented the minister of justice with a discus-sion paper in 2013 outlining on an alter-native funding model for search and rescue in BC. Their goal was to reduce fundraising and administrative demands on volun-teers.

Sonntag’s two goals and one assist effort in the final against Lewiston Police helped lead his team to a 6-3 win.

“It was a very competitive tourna-ment and the teams really knew what they were doing. We played teams that had three or four full lines. Playing with such a small group is a good workout, that’s for sure!”

It was the first time that a Canadian team had won gold in the annual tournament.

Equally as important to Sonntag was the fact that the tournament was a fundraiser that raised more than $10,000 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston.

“We wore suits everywhere we went, and the people were so friendly that it is almost indescribable.”

The championship trophy is now in Ontario, being toured around fire departments, and will go to Alberta next before being returned to Maine.

Sonntag, who will earn his Gold Seal carpentry certification this spring, said he is already making plans to join the team to defend its title next year.

He said that his participation in the World Games is proof that hock-ey opens up doors to unexpected opportunities, and teaches impor-tant life lessons.

“It’s good to see local kids play-ing hockey with their friends and schoolmates,” he said. “I encour-age them to keep up with hockey later in life. It’s a great form of recreation.”

I spent much of Saturday after-noon with a tiny seven-pounder on my chest and lap. And I could not have been happier.

We made the drive to Calgary on Friday to meet our fourth grand-child, Griffin, a son to our oldest, Evan, and his wife, Kate. He is also brother to their first child, who now seems likely to shed her nickname (courtesy of her cousin Wilson), Baby Isla.

Griffin was 15 days old on that lovely Saturday, and he spent much of his time lying tummy down on my chest, his little legs pulled up beneath him and head as close to my heart as it could get.

That bonding time transported me back nearly 36 years, to a warm June evening — Friday the 13th, actually —when I first held Evan. The next day I balanced him, head in my left hand and body along my forearm, so I could take his first portrait, using my right hand to snap the photo. A damaged left hand made that particular pose impossible with Griffin, but thanks to my Apple cellphone, I was able to take a number of selfies while his miniature body cuddled in against me.

There is something especially intense about the warmth of a baby, the regular shifts in position, soft mewls and variable breathing rates that make for a deep, inde-scribable sense of peace and well-being. Each time he got a bit rest-less I shifted him onto my lap, my feet up the coffee table edge so that he could lie facing me. Somehow, Evan, Kate and Griffin’s adoring

grandmother knew how much I wanted this time with the newest Eckersley.

Within days of Evan coming home from the Creston hospital, his grandparents — my parents —

arrived at the door to meet their first grandchild. He was a restless baby, already showing signs of asthma and allergies, though a diagnosis was years away. To help relax him we took long walks, the bouncing of the baby carriage on Stocks-Jackson Road providing a calming effect.

Evan was born after a long peri-od of labour, and his face showed every bit of his struggles to make it out into the world. We jokingly referred to him as Killer Kowalski because he looked like a wrestler who had been through a tough match. By contrast, Griffin, born by Caesarean section, looks especially relaxed and unmarked.

There is a poem that begins “I never knew I could love so much, until the day I felt your touch.” So true.

As a single young man I can’t say that I gave much thought to being a father. But marriage changed all that and wanting kids seemed as natural as breathing.

We made the move to Creston in anticipation — we wanted a small community to be home to our chil-dren, a place where they could grow up playing outside, make friends and have a sense of inde-pendence that the city did not seem to offer. I feel a touch of sad-ness when I watch how hard our sons and their wives have to work to give their children a balanced, interesting life as they juggle childcare and jobs. Small back-yards are really the only places that offer independence and while playgrounds are close by and abundant, escape from adult supervision is many years away.

We were a working couple, too, though, and I don’t think our own boys suffered from the shuffle. We made an effort to arrange our work schedules so that we each had time with the kids on our own. It saved on daycare costs but it also helped create close bonds. Few of the dads we knew had as much time alone with their babies as I did, and I felt lucky to have the opportunity. And each time we visit them as adults and see these young men with their little ones, it provides a pro-found sense of satisfaction. Our sons’ homes are close together and it is a joy to see the little ones so happy when Uncle Evan or Uncle Ryan arrive on the scene. It is con-firmation that the circle of life is not a poetic construct, but instead a tangible gift.

I am grateful for the role, howev-er small, I have in this marvelous process.

Argh! Pride, the constant stum-bling block on my road to heaven. I catch myself being proud of some-thing I have done, so try to be humble instead and then immediately am proud of my humbleness.

Pride has always come between man and God. The Old Testament is full of examples. Jesus tells of the Pharisee who stood before God prais-ing himself in comparison to the pub-lican, “I’m better than that guy.” I know I do the same. “Well, at least I’m not as bad as…,” I say to myself or others as I look for praise in all the wrong places. The only standard for behaviour I should be using is Jesus Christ, measure of all I should be.

All of creation carries the image of God, but sin tarnished that image. Jesus cleansed creation and restored the image for all who want it. Even though I want it, as long as I am alive on this Earth, I will always be a sinner whether I like it or not.

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” (1 John 1:8 )

I have my lifetime to work out my salvation with fear and trembling. (Philippians 2:12) It’s not enough to sim-

ply say, “I believe,” and ta da! I’m saved. I have to act on that salvation. That’s where the pride comes in. Every time I take a step closer to becoming more Christ-like, I pat myself on the back: “Look at that. This time last year I would’ve been so upset at what happened, but now I can take it with patience and peace of mind.” Yeah, it’s good that I have more patience and that things don’t ruffle my feathers the way they once did, but

being proud of it is like one step forward and two steps backward down the path towards the Pharisee. And just the fact that I can see that, and acknowledge it publicly, can lead me down the spiral staircase of pride to failure. Pride can be really sneaky. And now I’m proud that I can recognize that…

According to the world, I’m supposed to take pride in what I do, especially if I’m doing it for the Lord. Even the most athe-istic of people have a grudging respect for someone like Mother Theresa.

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name

cast out demons, and in Your name per-form many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:21-23)

I personally think these people start-ed out by doing many miraculous things in the name of Jesus, but then, unfortu-nately, pride got in the way. Initially, they may have served God out of love but gradually they learned to love the praise of men more.

“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowl-edge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:2)

Pride and love can’t exist together. Pride can result in anger, legalism and even murder for the sake of honour. Love means mercy, forgiveness and reconcilia-tion. When I love others, I love God and if I love God then I will love others.

“If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.” (1 John 4:20)

If I can focus on God and His cre-ation, if I can do for him without worry-ing what others think, if I can retreat from pride instead of embracing it, then humility and meekness are within reach. But resisting pride is an ongoing battle, a constant biting of the tongue, vigi-lance in all things and keeping my eyes only on Christ, the standard for life.

To the Editor:(Open letter to Interior Health

Authority president and CEO Chris Mazurkewich)

I am very concerned by the way the Interior Health Authority policy pro-hibiting smoking on IHA property is impacting a small number of long-term residents at Swan Valley Lodge.

Generally speaking, it’s a policy that I can wholeheartedly support. I am a life-long non-smoker bothered by the smoke and tobacco residue evident on the cloth-ing, hair, and breath of smokers. So it is beyond ironic that I should be writing in support of smoking residents at Swan Valley Lodge. I am doing so as the almost daily visitor of an elderly resi-dent. I am writing because the current situation is one that I feel strongly about. I do not feel the reluctance to speak out about this issue that has been expressed by some of the smokers. They feel, as do I, that they are being treated as second-class citizens. Likewise, I am not an IHA employee, some of whom have expressed verbal support for the smokers but don’t feel that they can put that sup-port in writing.

It is heartbreaking for me, when I enter or exit SVL, to see the small num-

ber of smokers outside, all bundled up against the current cold wintry weather. It makes me angry that they aren’t pro-vided a place to smoke, out of the ele-ments, that’s conveniently and safely accessible. Repeated exposures to low temperatures and sometimes inclement conditions may be as harmful as expo-sure to burning tobacco itself.

I agree that employees and visitors at Creston Valley Hospital should be prohibited from smoking on hospital property. The hospital is a medical facility. I also agree that smoking patients who are expected to be short-stay residents should be made to smoke off the grounds, unless their conditions prevent smoking. Likewise, I agree that employees and visitors at Swan Valley Lodge should be required to abide by the IHA policy. However, I think that residents should be treated differently. My reasons are as follows:

•Unlike Creston Valley Hospital, Swan Valley Lodge is primarily a resi-dence, not a medical facility. It is the resi-dents’ home. I daresay, though, that it is one that none of them probably would’ve chosen as their long-term, and likely final, home. As nice a place as SVL is, and as competent, caring and compas-sionate as the care staff is, I doubt that residence at SVL has been any resident’s fervent goal. Instead, it is their default residence because their physical and/or mental health circumstances dictate that they live where round-the-clock personal care is available should it be needed.

•Smoking is an addictive behaviour that many people find difficult to over-

come, despite numerous attempts. Other smokers enjoy, and choose to continue, smoking, in spite of their knowledge of its negative health effects. That is their right, as long as their smoking doesn’t impinge on the rights of other people in the vicinity.

•The public street closest to SVL is not level. It slopes down towards busy Highway 3. It is sufficiently sloped that the public sidewalk between it and SVL property could become a real safety hazard should the brakes on a resi-dent’s wheelchair fail while he/she is on it in order to smoke off SVL proper-ty. Add in frosty, icy or snowy condi-tions, and one can easily see how dan-gerous it could be. Just getting to and from the sidewalk in such conditions is both difficult and hazardous.

Until a few months ago, resident smokers were permitted to smoke in an outdoor courtyard area away from pub-lic viewing, under a narrow covered portion between two residence wings. However, during warmer weather, some residents, whose windows opened into the courtyard, complained that cigarette smoke was drifting into their rooms. After that, the smokers were no longer permitted to smoke in the courtyard. I realize that smoking has become a taboo behaviour. However, I am asking that the leadership of IHA please provide a safe, easily accessed area, sheltered from all weather conditions, for the small number of resident smokers at Swan Valley Lodge.

By now everyone will have heard that our beloved loonie has lost about 30 cents to its American counterpart. So the story goes — expect to see a four to five per cent increase in your grocery bill this year. This doesn’t add up. Four to five dollars for a head of cauliflower, and almost as much for your broccoli? It is no small wonder our two grocery stores’ owners are the second and third wealthi-est folks in Canada. This helps focus our attention on the retail end of pro-duce farming. Did you know in B.C. you are supposed to have a quota for commercial veg-etable crops?

In other business news, it appears two home improvement store chains may be set to amalgamate. The lower dollar has essentially put Canadian companies on sale. Bigger com-panies have more bargaining power with their suppliers. The BNN reporter is standing in front of one of these stores with a giant garden centre sign in the background. In the horticul-ture industry larger box store chains have

introduced “pay by scan”. The wholesale nurs-ery grower gets paid if and when their stock is sold by the store. If the weather is good and the product moves well, all is good. If it gets

burnt up in the hot sun or freezes in the cold and wet weather, then the grower could lose his or her farm. It happens. In either case, the retail chain doesn’t have to pay for the stock and it still makes a profit with little or no risk. This is a pretty good business model, as long as they can find new suppliers every

couple of years.Meanwhile, back at the ranch I’m looking

forward to some sunshine! Time to feed the seed-lings in the greenhouse. Having received the last of the supplies, some 15,000 tags and some growing mix, everything is going according to plan. The plan is based on weeks. I target the sales weeks and work backward, figuring out how long it will take to produce the crops. If a crop takes two weeks to germinate and 12 weeks to grow on, you should end up seeding it 14 weeks before your sale date. Suppose the weath-er (big laugh here) will be average and folks like to plant just before the May long weekend which is the 20th week of the year. You’ll want to seed it this week. You could plan your veggie garden along these lines if you like. For now, it is pretty good orchard pruning weather.

A Zen's-Eye View

Nursery Notes

Zen master Eihei Dogen, in his 13th century essay, “Mountain and Rivers Sutra”, says, “Green moun-tains thoroughly practice walking and eastern mountains thoroughly practice traveling on water.”

Have you ever noticed that ani-mals can’t live an unreal life? We humans can wake up one day and realize that we’ve been living an unreal life for the last 30 years. This often happens when people begin Zen practice or when they hear the wisdom of Buddha’s teachings. Dogen says that mountains thor-oughly practice being exactly what they are. Part of our problem is that we don’t thoroughly practice; in other words, we don’t thoroughly live our lives. But mountains do.

Anyone who has attended a full Zen retreat knows how wonderful it

is to live a Zen life punctuated by the sound of a bell guiding our daily rou-tine. It’s like floating through time, and if you are steeped in Zen litera-ture, phrases from the teachings may suddenly come to mind and brighten

your view. Dogen started out this essay with the phrase “mountains are mountains” in mind. So here he is thinking about another phrase, “Eastern mountains are walking on water.”

We feel slightly off balance when Dogen talks like this. Our fixed idea is that moun-tains don’t walk; mountains don’t travel on water. That’s

absurd. But here he goes on like mountains walking on water is just a matter of fact. If you really examine mountains you’ll see that his words are true. Mountains do travel on water. They travel on clouds, they travel on streams and they travel on snowmelt. Every leaf of every plant on every mountain is water. Water causes constant motion, constant decay and renewal. This is the moun-tains’ thorough practice.

Dogen says, “Keeping its own form without changing body and mind, a mountain always practices.” This brings us back to the feeling of

mountains, to the practice of sit-ting in zazen through everything that arises, in the same way that a mountain is steadfast thorough all weathers. As our sitting prac-tice deepens, we sit steadfast through all conditions: happi-ness, sadness, joy, hope, despair, grief and doubt. We just sit still and discover that we have the power to do so through all con-ditions —like a mountain does. We endure as a mountain endures. Dogen says that’s how mountains always practice everywhere.

But what about mountains travelling over water?

Here Dogen asks us to deep-en our understanding, to broad-en our view. He says, “When your understanding is shallow you will doubt the phrase ‘green mountains are always walking’. When your understanding is immature you are shocked by the words ‘flowing mountains’. Without fully understanding the words ‘flowing mountains’ you drown in small views and nar-row understandings.” Dogen invites us to let go of limiting

beliefs, and view our lives through a new and deeper lens.

Suggested practice: Reflect on how your conditioned beliefs limit freedom of thought. Imagine how your freedom would deepen if you dropped those beliefs, and sim-ply observed the world as-it-is.

hold them up more than it will a moose.

A deep snow cover enables both people and animals to tra-verse more easily over much of the ground vegetation, rocks and windfalls. Unless the area had been seen in summer, one would hardly know that they weren’t having to wrestle through “mountain misery” (white mountain rhododen-dron) or endure a painful whopping by devil’s club.

If one were to venture into the creekside forest along Summit Creek at the Char Creek Forest Service Road, it might be found that the events that take place over fall and winter, leading up

to the time when a person may travel more easily through a for-ested area, are quite diverse, pro-ducing more than a straightfor-ward outcome.

From the Char Creek road bridge over Summit Creek we could see several areas where the water wasn’t bridged over by snow. In one of those spots, a log that lay across the creek over open water was laden with five feet of snow. The different snow-falls could be seen in the many layers of this wall of snow. On snowshoes we entered down off the road into what looked like a flatish area along the creek to the left of the road several hundred feet south of the bridge. By the

humps and bumps and depres-sions in the snow it was very evident the groundscape certain-ly wasn’t smooth, even though, with the deep snow cover, travel was relatively easy.

Several of the deep depres-sions or pits in the snow cover, as much as four feet deep, had very little snow accumulation. Some were wet, indicating a seep that melted successive snow falls. It was best to snowshoe around the pits as one could slide into the hole on the crust under the five inches of fresh snow. We did the same with the “tree wells”. Where two trees were close together, a narrow bridge of snow separated the two tree wells. Some of these bridges were narrow and slippery, Here ski poles helped prevent sliding one way or the other into a five-foot-deep well under the branch-es of a tree.

Sliding into a tree well or deep snow hollow isn’t a diffi-cult undertaking. Sometimes getting out is another story, espe-cially if the skis or snowshoes end up above one’s body. Then, the next move is to get the foot-wear lower than the body. It might mean taking skis or snow-shoes off to get out. Tree wells can be blamed on the tree’s branches. Snow lands on the branches and ultimately melts or sublimates, evaporates without melting, leaving bare ground under the tree. Tree wells do offer shelter in emergency.

While somewhat following the creek, we encountered steep slopes in two places. To continue along the creek, here it was easi-er to use one of the many snow bridges to reach the other side and an easier route. Sometimes steep slopes are unavoidable. In one instance, we looked for an inclined ridge in the snow that would take us to the bench above. Here again, the ski poles were not just helpful but a neces-sity for holding on the slope. Cleated snowshoes are certainly an advantage if not a necessity.

Well, there are some point-ers about snowshoeing in deep woods, over deep snow. And if not pointers, then reminders or perhaps some-thing to muse about.

When hiking forest trails in the summer, it is hard to imagine what it would be like to hike the same trails in winter when they are under a deep cover of snow. Following a trail in summer isn’t too difficult for the

watchful hiker as one usually just walks where there are no branches, other forest litter and where there may be footprints. But in winter, if the snow is deep and the landscape, landmarks and leafless trees and shrubs are cloaked in snow, transfig-uring the once familiar scene into something new and different, one can lose the trail. With the ground

covered with several feet of snow, burying logs, stumps and rocks, it may look like there are trails all over the place. Unless a person has an idea of what direction to take and knowl-edge of the lay of the land, what was once intended to be a half-day hike may instead turn out out to be an all day affair.

There are many different aspects of hiking in a snowy landscape, one of which is that it can provide more exercise (more of a workout) in a shorter distance than does a sum-mer hike.

Sometime during the summer while hiking over lower elevation forest trails, imagine that during the winter with five or six feet of snow on the same route, you would be that much higher, getting quite a different perspective of the sur-rounding trees and terrain. Caribou get that level of view, and higher, as the snow accumulates. With “snow-shoe” feet, they browse lichens at a higher and different level than they would in summer. The snow will

CRESTON VALLEY HOSPICE SOCIETY

Volunteers accumulated 3,076 hours of service to the dying and shut-ins of the Creston Valley in 2015, mem-bers were told at the Creston Valley Hospice Society annual general meeting on Jan. 27 at the Rotacrest Hall. These statis-tics, recorded by hospice co-ordinator Benita Josephson, make the Creston society the most active in the area.

President June Moseanko reminded the 34 members pres-ent of the accomplishments of 2015, beginning with the fur-nishing of the Kulilu palliative care room at the Creston Valley Hospital, in partnership with the Creston and Creston Valley Rotary clubs.

Hospice provides volunteers to sit, in shifts of two hours, with the dying, in hospital, in care homes or at home. Members also offer respite relief and visits to shut-ins or chronically ill.

Volunteers are screened, trained, provided meetings

every second month with guest speakers, and receive a quar-terly newsletter and an annual thank you dinner.

Hospice survives solely on grants and fundraising. This year’s raffle will be for a hand-made quilt, donated by vice-president Terri-Lynn Barrette. Member Laurel McNamar enthusiastically heads the drive for donations.

New brochures will be soon available at the hospital, Swan Valley Lodge and Crest View Care Village, as well as doctors’ offices. The hospice website, maintained by Dr. William Mitchell-Banks, can be visited at www.crestonbc.com/hospice.

Those interested in requesting hospice services or in becoming a volunteer, can call co-ordinator Benita at 250-428-7575.

BEGINNERCONCERT BAND

Creston’s own Beginner Concert Band is now in its third year and everyone involved is having a great time. They’re not only learn-ing their own instruments, but developing their listening and musical skills by playing

with friends in a band. The band welcomes all

beginner (and not so begin-ner) players of traditional band instruments. This includes woodwinds (flutes, clarinets and saxophones), brass (trumpets, trombones and tubas) and bowed strings (violins and cellos). Members don't need to be able to read

music — we’ll help you learn to do this. But you do need to own or have access to an instrument.

The Beginner Concert Band meets for rehearsals 4-5 p.m. Wednesdays at Christ Church Anglican (422 Seventh Ave. N.). For more information call Bob at 250-866-5772 or visit www.mel-lowood.ca/music/bband.

All welcome to play in Beginner Concert Band

BY BRIAN LAWRENCEAdvance Editor

After three wins in the last week, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats are just two wins away from clinching second place in the

Eddie Mountain Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

The Creston team currently has 62 points, putting it six ahead of the Fernie Ghostriders and eight ahead of the Columbia Valley

Rockies, but well shy of the Kimberley Dynamiters’ 72 points.

Creston’s Feb. 3 win took place on the road, with a 3-2 defeat of the Dynamiters, the last match between the two in the regular season, but a good test for the playoffs.

“Obviously, they’re a team that if you expect to advance too far in the playoffs, your going to have to go through them,” said head coach Jeff Dubois.

The game started out slow, with one Kimberly goal in the first period, but Creston took over the game in the second period with goals by Logan Styler, Alec Wilkinson and Nicholas Kovacik. The Dynamiters scored once more in the third period.

“They play in a pretty tough rink to win games in as a road team,” said Dubois. “And vice-versa — we’ve got three wins against them on home ice.”

The game was a true team effort, he said, with three sepa-rate lines scoring the three goals, but a lot of credit goes to goalie Jason Mailhoit.

“We only allowed 22 shots on Wednesday, which is right in that range that you’re hop-ing to hold a team like Kimberley to on home ice.”

With several players side-lined by injuries and the flu on Friday, the first period against the Golden Rockets was a tight one, Dubois said, with a goal by Brett Witala tying the score 1-1 late in the

first period. Golden didn’t score again, with Liam Plunkett and McConnell Kimmett scoring in the sec-ond, and Carson Cartwright (two) and Witala scoring in the third.

Cartwright earned four points in that game, and Wilkinson, Witala and Plunkett added to the suc-cess.

“All of those guys chipped in, and we were pretty solid on the defensive side of the puck,” said Dubois.

Goalie Dawson Fennell also did his part.

“He just managed to do everything he needed to do,” said Dubois. “Especially early in game when it was tight, he gave us every chance to win.”

Creston increased its four-point lead to six with Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Fernie Ghostriders. There were no goals in the first peri-od, but Styler and Ian Desrosiers scored in the sec-ond, with Fernie’s only goal scored in the middle of the period. Cartwright scored Creston’s third goal on an empty net with 49 second remaining in the third.

With only nine forwards and four defencemen on Creston’s bench in the third period, tension was high.

“Some of those guys were under the weather, and ended up having to battle,” Dubois said.

The Thunder Cats start this weekend by hosting the Golden Rockets, at the bottom of the

division with 12 points. As always, he won’t take their position for granted.

“The ingredients have been the same with them as the sea-son has gone along,” he said. “They play a meat and potatoes kind of game, and you have to work hard to compete with them defensively.”

On Saturday, the Thunder Cats will visit the Grand Forks Border Bruins, where they will face four former Thunder Cats, Austin Dean, Trey Mason, Tyler Fyfe and Graeme Close.

“That’s actually a game we’ve had circled,” said Dubois.

Those four, as well as the efforts of head coach Emery Olauson have helped turn the team around — this is the first season since at least 2005-2006 (kijhl.ca records only go back that far) that Grand Forks has made the playoffs.

“He’s done an outstanding job in Grand Forks,” said Dubois. “They turned them-selves into a team tough to play. It’s been a number of years since you could say with a straight face that going into Grand Forks is a test of where you are with gritty, road-type of hockey.”

The Nelson Leafs, whom the Thunder Cats visit on Wednesday, have also gone through a change, with Mario DiBella now the head coach.

“From the bit that I’ve seen, they’re a whole different team since they made the switch,” said Dubois.

WILDSIGHT

On Feb.18 at Rotacrest Hall, the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight is pleased to host Adrian Leslie, the project manager of Darkwoods conservation area for the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Leslie is a professional biologist focused on species at risk, fire ecology, ecosystem restoration and climate change adaptation. He has worked from wetland to mountaintop throughout the Columbia Basin for the past 15 years.

Managing Darkwoods provides interesting challenges with its history of human disturbance and a future facing climate change. He will provide a brief history of Darkwoods, why it became the largest private conserva-tion property in Canadian history, and discuss future conservation and resto-ration work through the Nature Conservancy of Canada.

Leslie’s presentation begins at 7 p.m., with Wildsight’s annual general meeting to follow. Admission will be taken at the door.
