Participants in the People's Climate Sister March in Ventura,
April 29th, included Crescenta Valley group’s Bettie Pearson (in red)
and Pat Kramer (in green). Approximately 600 people participated
in the march which looped through the Ventura Botanical Gardens.
The Crescenta Valley
Group’s Karen Buehler was a
member of a four-person team
that led an enthusiastic and
energetic group of over 20
people, in constructing a new,
sustainable trail in the heart of
Malibu Creek State Park. The
trail replaces the ecologically
damaging user-created trails
that connected Mulholland
Drive to High Road and Crags
Road.

Gabriele and Patrick Reynolds en-
joyed their 15-month stay in the Pana-
manian town of Boquete, southeast of
the Costa Rican border. In their May
13th slide presentation at the La Cresen-
ta Library, we got to see some of what
life is like in their agriculturally rich
mountain community that hosts 5,000
ex-pats out of a population of 25,000.
Vegetables and popular tropical
fruits, like mango and bananas, grow
uncultivated.
Pure water from uncontaminated
brooks cascade over rocks invite drinks
and for a while, they drank without con-
cern but then decided to boil the water
to remove unknown bacteria.
Horses are everywhere, it’s horse
country. Horse tie ups outside of
churches, cathedrals they captured im-
ages of an equestrian event in which the
competitors were mostly female.
As artistic directors of the Boquete
Theatre, they produced a play and held a
video festival giving out chocolate Os-
cars, which went over well.
They introduced the audience to the
“Soul Fire Project,” a musical group that
Gabriele described as: “kind of like the
partridge family.” The mother
drives the biodiesel, solar-powered
bus, throughout Central America.
The musicians give training in agri-
culture and sustainability. They
have picked others which led, at one
time, to 22 people lived on the bus.
“It must have been very stinky,”
Right – Congressman
Ted Lieu received our
Public Policy Award. He
represents the 33rd Dis-
trict. In 2015, Congress-
man Lieu introduced
H.R.1971 – The Climate
Solutions Act.
Left – California State
Senator Henry Stern was the
keynote speaker. He promised
to protect this state’s natural
resources.
He recently introduced
SB57 which calls for a mora-
torium on natural gas storage.

Jazz is popular in Boquete. The
town hosts a four-day “World
Class” Jazz Festival, in which noted
musicians from the rock group War
and Joe Louis Walker were among
the participants.
