welcomeBelfast School of Art at Ulster University has been at the very heart of the cultural and creative life of Northern Ireland for over a Century. We are understandably proud of our graduates and the contribution they have made and continue to make to the quality of life here and in countries all over the world. Careers in Art and Design are not particularly visible or as easy to describe as traditional professions, but we all encounter their work on a a daily basis. Traditional art and design careers in advertising and graphic design, fashion design, photography, jewellery and ceramics are increasingly expanded as the way we consume cultural product changes. Our graduates are working designing websites for television, apps for global companies, documentary videos for online news, designing clothing for high street chains, researching image content for Sky TV, running museums and galleries, managing ceramic factories overseas, producing costumes for TV and film, animated shorts and features, illustrating childrens books, producing ebooks, designing visual effects and set design for theatre... the list could go on.

This small publication presents some examples of our graduates and what they are doing with their Ulster University qualifications and experience. They are simply a snap shot and we haven't included everything. As education becomes more expensive applicants are increasingly focused on careers. In the broad field of art and design success comes to those who are passionate and committed to the discipline. Like many fields it is competitive and we aim to equip our graduates with skills and attributes that will enhance their employability and give them an edge in their search for work. If you are creative and share our passion for art and design we would be happy to talk to you about our courses and the many opportunities we have to help you realise your ambition to work in a field that you enjoy.

Graduating with a degree in Visual Communication from Ulster University, Belfast in 2008, David cut his teeth at local design agency Design Ethos where he developed his passion for digital design. A year later he moved to London joining BBC Radio & Music as a junior designer. During his time there he helped deliver projects including iPlayer Radio, UK Radio player, and the Sony award winning Radio 1 & 1Xtra websites. Moving to Manchester with BBC Sport in 2011, David’s role was to lead the user experience for the London 2012 Olympics mobile website and apps. It was a roaring success scooping multiple awards from the likes of Webby and D&AD. Following on from the success of the Olympics he led the redesign of the BBC Sport mobile website and successfully launched the first native Sport app on both iOS and Android. “Working at the BBC is unique in that our users are effectively our clients. We are incredibly lucky to work closely with our audience to gain a better understanding of their needs. I love my job because I get to design experiences that have a genuine, positive impact on users’ everyday lives.”In May 2013 he took on the Creative Director role for BBC Childrens (CBBC & CBeebies) with the aim to serve a rapidly growing younger audience on mobile.

'I exhibit my work internationally, curate exhibitions, teach at degree level and my work is held in a number of private and public collections'

Stuart graduated from Silversmithing and Jewellery in 2000, and returned to complete a Masters degree in 2004. Since then he has established himself as a practising applied artist working in the field of silversmithing and jewellery. His work is concerned with exploration of materials through the objects of the everyday. There is a play between materiality and form in the everyday experience that Stuart seeks to touch upon the viewer's sense of the familiar and divert it into an alternative narrative and association. Stuart's accomplishments include winning the Association of British Designer Silversmiths Award, international solo and group exhibitions, curating exhibitions and teaching at degree level. His work is also held in a number of private and public collections.

Kim’s job consists of the day-to-day running of the art department and managing the curatorial staff that curate the National Museum's art collections.

‘One of the great aspects of my job is its variety. Opportunities are always arising such as new partnerships and potential acquisitions for the collection.’ ‘Organisational skills are extremely helpful both on a personal and professional level. Working for a museum means that you are more often than not working on many different types and scales of projects at the same time. It is a huge balancing act to get everything working together smoothly.’ ‘Although I work in the art department, I do think being creative helps in lots of areas of museum work. Thinking up new exhibitions, projects and partnerships that excite and motivate visitors to come to our museums is a very creative process. Flexibility is another attribute that is much needed as plans often change and being able to think on your feet when unforeseen situations arise is definitely beneficial.’ ‘Many people have inspired me throughout my life including members of my family, previous members of the art department and tutors at Art College.’

Since graduating from Ulster University, Michael has established himself as a successful practising artist, having been awarded membership of the Belfast Print Workshop, as well as winning the RDS James White Award in Drawing 2013. Michael's paintings and drawings celebrate the immense beauty he finds in complexity. His patterns are derived from memory and imagination, and there is an underlying theme of tension between Newtonian and Darwinian thinking, as both science and nature influence his work. In 2014 Michael took up a full-time residence in one of the art pods in Bangor's Project 24, a unique temporary art project on the seafront, where artists and designers work out of studios fully accessible by the public. This has developed a creative hub for both residents and visitors to create and appreciate a variety of artistic disciplines.

Worked within art education for the last fifteen years, as an artist, lecturer and head of department, with recent exhibitions in Paris, Dublin, Cork

Brian Fay describes his time on the MFA programme (1995-97) as of huge significance to his development as an artist and an educator. He says, ‘The two year full time duration of the programme fostered a spirit of experimentation in an environment that was both critical and supportive. My work benefited from being able to address some fundamental questions to what I felt constituted a meaningful art practice. It allowed us to take chances.’ ‘The programme also nurtured some important relationships and support networks that have remained with me. Many of those in my year have gone on to work as practicing artists, curators, art writers and educators. I have been very fortunate to work within art education for the last fifteen years, as an artist, lecturer and head of department. This would not have happened without my qualification from Ulster University in Belfast, the high reputation the programme is held in, and the quality of education and opportunities I received there.’ Brian Fay lectures in Fine Art at the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Recent solo exhibitions in Ireland include Broken Images or When Does Posterity Begin? (2011) Ashford Gallery RHA, Dublin. Recent group shows include Motion Capture: Drawing and the Moving Image, (2012/13) Lewis Glucksman Gallery, Cork, Ireland and Projet Gutenberg, (2012) Galerie Jeanroch Dard, Paris, France.

He is represented by NAG Gallery, Dublin.
