What is The College Board?

The College Board is a mission-driven not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and opportunity.

Founded in 1900, the College Board was created to expand access to higher education. Today, the membership association is made up of over 6,000 of the world’s leading educational institutions and is dedicated to promoting excellence and equity in education.

Each year, the College Board helps more than seven million students prepare for a successful transition to college through programs and services in college readiness and college success — including the SAT and the Advanced Placement Program. The organization also serves the education community through research and advocacy on behalf of students, educators and schools.

Counselors as a Community Dedicate part of the counseling office to college resources, with information on

scholarships, financial aid, applications and specific colleges. Schedule frequent conferences with each student individually (regardless of

academic level) to monitor future plans. Lead group sessions on college-related issues such as writing essays, getting

recommendations, preparing for tests, applying for financial aid and planning for careers.

Repeat these sessions as parent nights, using translators if necessary. Engage parents by providing knowledge and debunking myths about available

college-related options. Hold a majors and career day, presenting different areas of study, career paths and

employment forecasts for graduates. Host a college fair with representatives from a variety of educational institutions:

local community colleges, technical schools, large public universities and smaller private liberal arts colleges.

Distribute a newsletter to students and parents detailing relevant and timely college information.

Create a college-of-the-week profile, complete with pictures, for circulation. Celebrate successes:

◦ Compile a graduate directory of alumni and the colleges they attended. ◦ Announce student acceptances publicly. ◦ Invite local college graduates to speak.

The Process Help to plan a challenging course schedule. Keep records of classes and grades. Track graduation requirements. Suggest which college admission tests to take and

when to take them. Connect students to information on various colleges,

majors and careers.  Recommend colleges to match academic profiles and

career goals. Advise on "safety," "probable" and "reach" colleges. Make sure transcripts are sent to colleges. Write letters of recommendation. Explain how aid awards and financial aid work, and

connect students to local scholarship opportunities.
