Are you dreaming of a green Christmas? The festive period can mean an increase in the amount of rubbish that we produce. Not only do we buy more food and drink, we also buy cards and trees, not to mention all the presents.

By mid-afternoon on Christmas day we are usually slumped on the sofa surrounded by a mountain of rubbish – you can’t even see your feet because everything below knee level is submerged in a sea of wrapping paper, toy packaging and Christmas cards that have already been knocked off the mantelpiece.

So what can you do with all that rubbish? Some of it can be recycled in your recycling bin.

‘Hints and tips’ to stay green:• Paper giftwrap can be recycled but the metallic wrapping paper can’t!• Cardboard advent calendars can be put in your recycling bin but just take

out the plastic insert that holds the chocolates• Used paper plates and napkins can’t be recycled as they are covered in food

leftovers• Ensure beer and lager cans are empty before putting in your recycling bin • Flatten large cardboard boxes from presents, put them inside your recycling

bin and keep your recycling bin lid shut• If you get new electrical gifts for Christmas please don’t put your old ones in

your recycling bin – take them to your local Household Waste Recycling Site where they can be recycled

Crawley Borough Council has been awarded a grant of £2.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund to restore Worth Park to its former Victorian glory.

The money from the funds’ joint Parks for People programme will be used to restore and enhance the area and ensure that the people who visit this historic park have an enjoyable and educational experience.

Six outdoor spaces around Crawley have been chosen to become part of a living legacy for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The Queen Elizabeth II Fields challenge, operated by charity Fields in Trust, aims to protect 2,012 outdoor spaces in communities all over the country to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The six sites, one for each decade of the Queen’s reign, are:

• BroadfieldPark,Broadfield.

• EwhurstWood,LangleyGreen.

• GrattonsConservationArea,Pound Hill.

Several organisations have pulled together to make a difference to the lives of young people who have been through tough times.

A YMCA initiative, supported by Crawley Borough Council and its maintenance contractor MITIE, aims to provide valuable skills, better job prospects and accommodation.

YMCA apprentices will makeover 30 empty homes around West Sussex and gain painting and decorating skills along the way.

The renovated properties will provide stable homes for young people who have required support from the YMCA but are now ready to live independently.

Six spaces to celebrate six decades

The final phase of the successful Bewbush Regeneration Project has been given the green light.

Breezehurst Drive will be the site of 40 new council homes, providing much needed, affordable housing.

The scheme will be funded by a £1million grant from the Homes

and Communities Agency. Countryside Properties plc has been appointed as the developer partner.

Work will start in spring and be completed by March 2015.

We all want to feel safe in the places where we live, work and relax. It’s important that we are able to go about our day-to-day business without fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Community safety has been identified by residents as an important issue so Crawley Borough Council is seeking requests for the Community Safety Improvements Programme for extra or improved street lighting. The programme’s aim is to reduce crime, fear of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Most requests focus on improvements to existing street lighting but we’re happy to look into small-scale suggestions you feel would help to improve safety in your neighbourhood.

Crawley is officially a clean town after achieving four stars in the Clean Britain Awards.

Ten areas were visited and judges assessed the town based on 13 different criteria, including general

litter, chewing gum, graffiti and fly-tipping.

Thanks to council workers and local residents, the town was described by judges as ‘a well maintained environment with the issue of litter well under control.’

Allowing your dog to foul public places in Crawley and not clearing up the mess can lead to a fixed penalty notice (FPN) of £50.

Dog fouling is unpleasant and irresponsible. Failing to remove it is illegal, as well as being a danger to human health.

The minority of irresponsible dog owners who do not clean up after their dogs damage

Always carry a means to clear up after your dog, whether this is a simple plastic bag or a poop scoop device.

If you see someone failing to clear up after their dog call the Community Wardens on 07884 492324. The wardens, who regularly visit hot spot areas, can only issue an FPN if they witness the dog fouling.

Fitness makeover

Work to upgrade the dam at the Mill Pond is continuing.

Following the council’s decision in February to upgrade the dam, site investigation works are ongoing and results are expected this month.

Five companies have been invited to tender for the early contractor involvement stage of work to the Mill Pond. A contractor will be chosen in March 2013.

Work is continuing on the key design elements around the dam, including the crest height of the dam, a potential change to the height of the existing spillway and the width and level of the emergency spillway.

A planning application is expected in November 2013. If approved, construction will begin in April 2014 and take around two years to complete. Some access to the Mill Pond will be restricted during this time.

A range of low-emission vehicles completed the third annual Brighton to London RAC Future Car Challenge in November, stopping off at Central Sussex College’s Crawley campus on the way.

Electric, hybrid, hydrogen and low-emission petrol and diesel cars competed to complete the 63-mile route using the least amount of energy possible. Entrants included large car manufacturers, celebrity drivers and independent motoring enthusiasts showcasing their vehicles.

Central Sussex College was, for the third year running, chosen as a stopping point, with cars arriving at the Crawley campus from just after 8am.

A number of celebrity drivers took part in the event. Actor, presenter and green car ambassador, Robert Llewellyn drove a Vauxhall Ampera, DJ Mark Goodier was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi i-Miev, Olympic swimmer Ross Davenport

showcased a Toyota Prius Plug in, Coronation Street star Tony Hirst was in a Nissan Leaf, and Top Gears’ Former Stig, and Hollywood stunt driver, Ben Collins, also drove a Nissan Leaf.

In preparation for the stonework restoration early next year, selective shrub and tree clearance work will take place.

A re-planting scheme, reflecting the range of species and original intention of the Victorian period layout, will be taking place over the coming planting seasons.

The work has been carefully planned at this time so it does not interfere with the nesting season.

the hawthThe Hawth now has a dance studio, a digital cinema and a newly re-designed foyer for visitors to enjoy. The changes have been made by Parkwood Leisure who began operating the theatre in February, working in partnership with Crawley Borough Council.

The cast of Aladdin – Les Dennis and Noel Sullivan, along with Jon Clegg and Helen Kurup – paid an early visit to Crawley to officially launched this year’s action-packed pantomime during a visit to The Hawth theatre!

This Christmas will see Les Dennis don a frock as Widow Twankey. Joining Les will be Noel Sullivan (Hear’say) in his pantomime debut in the title role of Aladdin and Crawley favourite Jon Clegg plays Wishee Washee, ensuring comedy takes centre stage once again at The Hawth’s annual pantomime. Adding a touch of glamour to the proceedings is Helen Kurup (CBBC’s I Dream) in the role of Princess Jasmine.

The Hawth has opened a brand-new Sway dance studio complete with mirrored walls, a sprung floor and highly qualified and enthusiastic teachers.

Sway Dance is a successful dance brand and provides inspiring dance experiences at Parkwood Leisure venues across the country.

Sway Dance Brand Manager Kylie Stevenson said: “Dance is a wonderful way to keep fit and make friends. Dancers will get the chance to perform on The Hawth stage, and who knows - one day maybe even in the West End!”

Street dance classes for all ages on Mondays and zumba for adults on Wednesday evenings are up an running and proving extremely popular already.

Collections may not be made at the usual time of day during the holiday period, so please make sure your

Due to bank holidays and the Warnham landfill site being closed over the festive season, some of

Preparing for snowOver the past few years Crawley has been hit with some pretty extreme weather conditions that saw some of the council’s services disrupted. While some disruption to services is inevitable, Crawley Borough Council has put a series of plans in place to minimise interruptions should the snow and ice come our way again.

grit bagsWe have increased the number of grit bags we have requested from West Sussex County Council from 66 to 80. There will be one grit bag at each neighbourhood parade with the rest of the bags located around the town in identified problem areas. Grit bags will be delivered by the county council when the five-day weather forecast predicts heavy and prolonged snowfall.

Snow clearing equipmentThe council has snow plough blades and rear grit spreaders to attach to certain vehicles in the council’s fleet. If needed, the council will support the county council by using this equipment to clear priority areas such as ambulance, police and fire stations as well as Crawley Hospital, Snell Hatch Cemetery (if burials are booked) and elderly people’s dwellings and sheltered housing schemes. The county council will concentrate on clearing major highways, including all A and B roads.

Snow ForceOur network of volunteers – called the Snow Force – is growing. The volunteers have been provided with a snow clearing kit, which has items to help them clear snow from pavements such as a push-along grit spreader, a shovel, a broom and salt etc.

Two volunteers are located in each neighbourhood, at opposite ends, to help coordinate the snow clearing in their local areas.

SnowlineWe have set up Snowline, a dedicated phone line where we will leave recorded messages updating you on any service disruptions to our waste and recycling services. Call 01293 438215.

What you can do to helpIf the weather is severe please show community spirit and help out if you can. This could be clearing snow and ice or checking on a neighbour.

If you are clearing snow, it’s easier to do it when it’s fresh. It can be swept and shovelled, ideally on to grass areas or along the kerb. If possible, start removing the snow and ice in the morning. If you remove the top layer of snow in the morning, any sunshine during the day will help melt any ice beneath.

You can then cover the path with salt before nightfall to stop it refreezing overnight. Don’t use water or other liquids – this could cause more treacherous black ice.

If you are thinking of clearing snow and ice yourself, don’t be put off because you’re afraid someone will get injured and blame the way you’ve cleared it. People walking on snow and ice have a responsibility to be careful themselves.

Don’t make your home attractive to burglars. Keep doors and windows locked and ensure your home always looks occupied.

When planning a party or fireworks, please be considerate of other residents.

Don’t leave Christmas presents on display. Mark new valuables with your address or register them for free at www.immobilise.com

Don’t overload electrical sockets. Take special care with Christmas lights – unplug them if leaving them unattended.

Don’t leave valuables on display in cars. If possible, park in a secure ‘Park Mark’ car park. For more information visit www.parkmark.co.uk

Empty boxes and packaging from gifts outside your home alerts burglars as to what is inside. Only put them out for recycling collection or take them to the Household Waste Recycling Site.

Avoid walking alone at night – use a registered taxi or walk with somebody you know.

Don’t put on a brave face this Christmas. Domestic violence is unacceptable at any time of the year. Call the National Domestic Violence helpline on 0808 2000247 or visit the Crawley domestic violence drop-in, which is open every Monday from 1-3pm at Relate, The Orchard, Brighton Road, Crawley, call: 07817 990656.

Take time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours. Make sure they’re safe and ensure they have a working smoke alarm. Regularly check the battery of your own smoke alarm and remove any dust. Call 0800 3286487 for a free home fire safety check.

Drink responsibly – don’t leave drinks unattended and know your limits! Don’t drink and drive. If you are celebrating with a group of friends make sure you agree on a designated driver who agrees not to drink.

Sunrise Nursery offers childcare for children aged two to five years. The nursery is managed by professional childcare staff, offering a well established, high quality, safe and reliable service and comes highly recommended by parents.Located at the Town Hall and managed by Crawley Borough Council, the nursery is open from 8am-6pm Monday to Thursday and until 5.30pm on Fridays. Morning sessions are 8am-1pm and afternoon sessions are 1-6pm (5.30pm on Fridays). Each session costs £23.70 with morning and afternoon snacks included in the price.

Children aged three years and over are eligible for Early Education Funding and Sunrise accepts Childcare Vouchers to assist with costs.

There are 15 places available in each session. As a smaller nursery, staff are able to help with the often difficult transition from home to school.

Staff follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and are inspected by Ofsted.

Facilities include a computer area, outside space and a quiet room with a bed. Varied activities include arts and crafts, sand and water play, cooking, and visits to local parks and venues.

Councillor Brenda Burgess is Chair of Crawley Borough Council’s Licensing Committee. Here Brenda explains what her role involves.

Licensing is a fascinating area, covering many different activities. Most people think of pubs, clubs and off licences but there’s much more to it that that.The council’s licensing section issues and enforces a number of different licences, permits and consents. These include:

• Personallicencesforthesaleofalcohol

• Premiseslicencesforthesaleandsupplyofalcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshments

• Clubpremiseslicencesforthesupplyofalcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshments

• Gamblinglicencesandpermits.

Having Gatwick Airport in the town makes us a port health authority, meaning that we get involved in public health matters which many other local authorities do not.

As well as the main Licensing Committee, Licensing Sub-Committees are held to consider applications, reviews and/or variation of certain licences.

A recent example is where we have approved/rejected an application for a new pub on Maidenbower Business Park.

Another was in October, when we granted a licence to sell alcohol to a newsagent in Northgate. However, the conditions of the licensee’s lease do not allow him to sell alcohol. This is a strange situation but the Licensing Sub-Committee is unable to take agreements like this into consideration when granting (or rejecting) applications.

The four aims of licensing are:

• Publicsafety

• Preventionofcrimeanddisorder

• Preventionofpublicnuisance

• Theprotectionofchildrenfromharm.

All licensed premises must meet these objectives. It is the responsibility of the Licensing Committee to make sure that the licences issued ensure the premises are run in the correct way.

The role I have is really interesting. It’s full of variety and has an impact on everyone’s day to day lives.

Q&A WITH TS gLORIOUS & TS SUPERB OF THE NAUTICAL TRAININg CORPSHow long has your group been established?TS Glorious has been running within the local community for 46 years. TS Superb is proud to be 43 years old.

Is it open to all ages? We are pleased to be able to involve cadets aged from eight all the way to 17 years of age, at which point many decide to stay having been promoted to officers.

Is there any cost? TS Glorious costs £3 per week, TS Superb costs £3.50 per week. This money helps to fund the units.How many members does it have?TS Glorious has 12 serving members, but is always looking to grow! TS Superb has 42.

What activities does it provide?There are a wide range of activities that we take part in as part of the NTC, from taking part in local events, through to camping, orienteering, archery, air-rifle shooting, first aid swimming and sports. Something for everyone really!

The Nautical Training Corps (NTC) is a uniformed youth organisation and registered charity, based in the south of England. The Corps aims to help young people develop their full potential through nautically-based training.Opportunities are provided to explore a wide range of experiences and activities including sailing, canoeing, sports, climbing, marching band and

shooting. These are available at the Corps’ local divisions, its two national activity centres and other organisations’ facilities. Many units offer their cadets the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Cadets are encouraged to progress through ranks, based upon those employed in the Royal Navy leading to instructor and command positions. Currently more than 400 cadets and 100 officers, instructors and adult volunteers comprise the Corps, which also operates sailing and boating centres.

Crawley gets more BRITAIN IN BLOOM awards

Crawley has won the silver gilt prize at the 2012 Britain in Bloom Awards.The town was up against Gosport (Hampshire), Harrogate (North Yorkshire), Loughborough (Leicestershire) and Taunton (Somerset) in the small city category. Loughborough won the category with a gold award.

Crawley also won silver gilt two years ago, but received higher marks this time around with strong potential to move forward. Judging for the national competition is stricter than for the regional competition.

And the success didn’t end there. Let’s FACE it! co-ordinator Ruth Growney won the Britain in Bloom Community Champion Award and Desmond Anderson School was one of only two schools nominated for the Britain in Bloom Discretionary Award for Best School. The results were announced in October.

The Britain in Bloom judges called Crawley ‘a thriving and dynamic town’ and said: “The award-winning Let’s FACE it! initiative is the driving force behind the local Bloom campaign and the benefits

which this is bringing to the town, in terms of environmental improvements and community engagement, are clear for all to see.

“Eye-catching sustainable planting schemes, complemented by

high-quality colourful floral container displays, provide real impact. Crawley is to

be congratulated on producing an entry which has excellent

community support.”

Judges picked out many areas of achievement, including:

Family and Teen Weight off Workshops

Learn how small changes to diet and exercise habits can lead to

big changes to your health at a Weight off Workshop (WoW).

Family WoW is designed for children aged between six and 11

years accompanied by a parent or carer, while those aged up to 16

can attend Teen WoW.

The programme is 12 weeks long. Weekly meetings include:

Christmas is the season to be merry and of goodwill to all. This is true for many Crawley residents, who can look forward to celebrating, visiting loved ones, exchanging presents and a chance to overindulge.Spare a thought however for those who see this season as a time of anxiety or depression. Extra financial pressures, having no relatives and disruption to a normal routine can lead to loneliness and isolation.

Many charities find this to be the busiest period of the year – helping people with financial and emotional issues, access to accommodation or simply a Christmas meal.

Pressures are likely to be even greater this year as a result of the tough economic climate. There will be greater demand on the services provided by charities or voluntary groups, who themselves have less money and resources.

Crawley Council for Voluntary Service (CCVS), an independent charity, has provided support to more than 300 charity and voluntary groups this year.

CCVS is totally reliant upon grants and donations from residents and organisations to continue these services. It faces a £46,000 deficit in its budget for the forthcoming period and, as a result, resources available to support local charities and voluntary groups have been reduced.

How can you help to make this a season of goodwill to all?One option is a donation to a charity of your choice. CCVS launched its 2012 appeal over the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend to help with the continuation of its services. The appeal aims to have 1,952 local residents donating £5 a month and 60 local businesses donating £1,952 over the next 12 months. To find out how to support this appeal, visit www.crawleycvs.org
