Restoration work is underway at Worth Park.

Crawley Borough Council has been awarded a grant of £2.4m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund to restore Worth Park to its former Victorian glory.

The money from the funds’ joint Parks for People programme will be used to restore and enhance the area and ensure that the people who visit this

historic park have an enjoyable and educational experience.

Work has started on the stonework restoration and tree work around the dam is nearing completion.

Restoration work and improvements to Ridley’s Court are scheduled for May to October and lake works will begin this summer. Ornamental gardens landscaping and fountain restoration is scheduled to begin in September.

Worth Park

Crawley’s Got Talent II auditions begin this weekend with the showcase gala finale taking place at The Hawth on Saturday 18 May.

The winner of Crawley’s Got Talent in 2012, singer Heather Illidge, performs regularly around West Sussex and is aiming to develop a professional career in performing arts.

The Crawley’s Got Talent team is a partnership with voluntary groups including Crawley Young Person’s Council and Vision in Youth Collective.

The auditions take place on:

Crawley’s Got talent ii

Councillor Keith Blake, Mayor of Crawley, will be hosting a terrific day out for young people and their families on Saturday 4 May to raise money for his charity, Crawley Scouts.

The Mayorathon, which takes place from 10am-4pm at Tilgate Park, will include an incident hike, where entrants aged between six and 18 (plus parents) walk five or more sponsored laps of Tilgate Lake.

An activities village will feature many stalls, including a human fruit machine, agility dog show, walk the plank challenge, plaster cast painting, bar skittles, cake stall, golf putting competition and bouldering wall.

A range of markets are coming to Crawley’s town centre.

The regular fresh fish and meat market takes place in the High Street every Friday while on Saturdays the market sells fruit, vegetables and general items.

Every Wednesday the fruit, vegetable and general market moves to Queens Square.

Queens Square will host a continentalmarketfrom28-30March.

The weekly farmers’ market takes place from Sunday 7 April in Queens Square.

And the arts and craft market returns to Queens Square on 1June,6July,3Augustand7December.

Crawley’s economy has received another boost after the Centre for Cities ranked the town in the top 10 in the UK for business improvement.

This report, called Cities Outlook 2013,followstheexcitingnewsfrom Local Futures that Crawley is the seventh best place to do business in England.

Both respected think tanks have ranked the town highly, with the Centre for Cities focussing on house building and improvements in the local economy since the recession.

In the Local Futures research, Crawley was placed seventh out ofall325Englishtownsandcitieson a Business Index measure that assesses how attractive places are for businesses to invest.

Crawley scored very highly on major factors of economic performance, human resources, environment and infrastructure.

Economic boostStudents can see how science and technology play a part in everyday life through exciting hands-on workshops and demonstrations atCrawleySTEMfest2013.

Businesses and other organisations are offering activities to encourage more young people to study and take up careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Freedom Leisure, in partnership with Crawley Borough Council, will be providing a wide range of free and fun activities for all the family to try on Saturday 20 April between 10am and 4pm.

Activities include an inflatable obstacle course in the pool, diving and public swimming (children go free with a full paying adult).

Clubs will offer athletics, badminton, basketball, football, squash and table tennis sessions,

while a bouncy castle and soft play equipment will be available for children under five.

k2 Crawley open dayResidents are set to benefit from a third consecutive Council Tax freeze, which follows four years of the lowest rise in Sussex.

Crawley Borough Council’s Cabinetagreedthe2013/14budget at its meeting on 12 February. The budget is approved by Full Council, which met after we went to press. Visit www.crawley.gov.uk/news to find out what happened.

Capital expenditure of more than £4.1m is planned for projects including an improved combined heat and power

plant at K2 Crawley for local energy production, a feasibility study and part cost of a potential Tilgate Park access road, disabled facilities grants and installation of solar panels at the Town Hall.

Crawley residents’ Council Tax bills are made up of three elements – Crawley Borough Council, West Sussex County Council and Sussex Police. For every pound paid in Council Tax, Crawley Council received 13p,WestSussexCountyCouncil received 78p and SussexPolicereceived9p.

WORDfest is back again for 2013, with talks, performance events, workshops and a festival day at Crawley Library dedicated to children and young people.

Things will be slightly different this year as we’re focussing on events that people most enjoyed in the first two years of WORDfest so we’ll see the return of Spoken Word Artists, Stand Up Come-dians, Book Swap, Open Mic, and the Graphic Novel Panel.

The Hawth is putting on some fantastic WORDfest theatre events, including One Rogue Reporter, Female Gothic and two film screenings including Jane Eyre in the amazing new Curzon Cinema Screen.

The WORDfest Young Person’s Festival will feature Jeff Norton, author of MetaWars, creative workshops, story readings, face painting and more and we’re just waiting to hear from award-winning authors Jamie Thomson and Alex T Smith, whose books and workshops went down a storm with everyone last year.

We will also have the WORDfest bus back again, which was great fun last year. We look forward to seeing you!

meerkats are coming…

Three cheeky meerkats have arrived at Tilgate

Nature Centre. They are settling into their new

home at the moment and will be out for everybody

to see at Easter.

They can have three litters a year, so hopefully

there will be some mini-meerkats very soon.

Come along and see them – they are very

inquisitive, friendly and lots of fun.

Did you know?

In the wild, meerkats live in the deserts of southern Africa.

Meerkats are actually a type of mongoose.

A group of meerkats is called a clan. It is usually made up

of 10 to 20 animals but can have as many as 50!

Famously, while the group are looking for food, one

meerkat will act as a ‘look out’ to watch for predators.

They tend to eat insects, small mammals and birds but

they do enjoy a tasty scorpion every-so-often.

They are out and about all day and can often be

seen sunbathing. Nights are spent safely

underground in their burrows.

The Neighbourhood and Home Watch Network (NHWN) has been nominated to receive The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Volunteering Award 2012.

The award recognises national volunteer organisations, as well as organisations which have been, and will continue to, work with volunteers as part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The award is recognition by the Queen of the organisation’s involvement in volunteering in the UK.

John Wright is Chairman of the Sussex Neighbourhood Watch Federation and the Crawley Neighbourhood Watch Association.

He said: “It is a very great honour for Neighbourhood Watch to be selected to receive this prestigious award. This is clear recognition of the important, consistent and reliable contributions which Neighbourhood Watch makes day in, day out, in helping to keep our homes, streets and communities safe places to live, work or visit.

“My grateful thanks go out to every Neighbourhood Watch member who plays a part in community safety. I am especially proud that Crawley Neighbourhood Watch was selected to help in facilitating the nomination.”

Karate Kyokushinkai

The British karate kyokushinkai has more than 45 dojos and

2,000 members across the Uk. The Crawley dojo, opened in

1969, is one of the longest established clubs and provides

training for people of all ages and abilities.

Kyokushinkai was founded by Masutatsu Oyama and brought to

Britainin1965–itisahighlyrespectedformofkarateandfocuses

on improving physical and mental ability, tournament techniques,

discipline and respect.

Members have the opportunity to train for tournaments and

progress through the belt grading system – it takes an average of

five years and a lot of dedication to reach the coveted black belt.

How long has your group been established?

The Crawley dojo has been running for more than 40 years and

hasbeenbasedatTilgateForestRecreationHutssince1991.

Is it open to all ages?

Kyoku Fit Kids runs for children aged five to ten, there is a juniors

class for ages eight to 15 and those over the age of 15 can join

the adult class.

Is there any cost?

Classes cost £4 for those under 16 with a monthly membership

monthly membership.

How many members does it have?

We have around 70 members in total.

What activities does it provide?

Classes include strength and conditioning exercises and training

in skills, etiquette and techniques. Beginner sessions are

available for new members.

The council hopes that by providing more parking spaces and

preventing access to the verges, residents will be able to park

near their homes without damaging green areas.

The street scene and parking improvements programme has

seen new spaces created across the town. These schemes

address streets/closes that experience the most severe lack of

parking, access problems and damage to verges or green areas.

The council received more than 100 scheme requests from

residents. Each area was assessed and the priority list on the

right was drawn up.

A set of solutions called alternative interventions are being considered to prevent parking on grass verges, which include the installation of fencing and street furniture.

A pilot project has been selected to test the effectiveness of the scheme. The pilot, at St Francis School in Southgate, addresses the complex issue of parents parking on grass verges during the school run.Installation of fencing is complete (pictured) and the council is working closely with the school, residents, parents, Sussex Police and West Sussex County Council to come up with a more complete solution to the overall issue.

West Sussex County Council (WSCC) elections are being held on Thursday 2 May.Nine WSCC seats are up for grabs in Crawley. There are elections in all the divisions , which are:

Wheels for Wellbeing – making cycling accessibleWheels for Wellbeing is now proudly working with Special Olympics Great Britain, helping children and adults with learning disabilities to learn how to ride.

Together we want every child and adult with a learning disability to have the opportunity to take part in quality cycle training, recreational led-rides and competition.Special Olympics GB provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with learning disabilities.
