As our summer approaches us very slowly, we now tend to think of getting a tan and swimming somewhere in our sea.We also have to decide if we will be going to one, or more, of the events on the Cromer Pier, including of course the Pier Show itself. One of the perks of running a local paper is the invited to the opening night and when we have been running competitions for one of the Sunday shows getting tickets to see them.Once again, as you will see onPage 9, it is time to select the Carnival Royal Party. So who will be the Carnival Queen this year? With the exception of one year all the past Carnival Queenshave been delightful girls who fitted into the wholeCarnival set up very well, indeed.I gladly take my hat off to all of the former members of the Carnival Royal Party for doing such a great job representing the town of Cromer. As I do every year, I go along to the selection evening at the Cliftonville Hotel and always try to work out, who they are going to go for this year.

I would like to draw readers attention to the front cover of this issue and the photos on page 6 from the book: East Anglia From The Air NorfolkIt is certainly a great example of how very beautiful Norfolk is. Yes at £17.99 it is not that cheap, but it would make a great gift to any and all the fans of this part of the UK.

“Enjoy Your Crab Tales”

Dear Philip,It was heartening to receive such a positive response to my Pirate Radio article in issue 033 - not only in your letters page from as far afield as Sheffield and Nottingham - but also, locally, in person. Thank you all.Can I prevail upon you once again to remind people of the film ‘The Boat that Rocked’ being shown at Mundesley Village Cinema in the Coronation Hall, on Thursday 24th April (this week), please? See Page 16 for details. This film is a comedy spoof of the carefree life and times of pirate radio in the 60’s, with much music, therefrom, to rekindle our memories. The showing of the film will be preceded by a live song set from Sharon Louise - the singer with the big voice and bigger personality. Sharon will be featuring songs of the time to put us in the mood for the film and magic trip back in time. The show commences at 7.30pm but be early, it could be a biggie!

Incidentally, there is an exhibition about Radio Caroline and other offshore stations at Norwich Forum all week (commencing 21st April) with a talk by Keith Skues on, Wednesday 23rd, of his life as a DJ on Caroline in the 60s.

Dear Philip.Walking through Mundesley Gold Park this afternoon as I was passing a group of about ten boys, aged between about nine to thirteen, playing football they stopped and invited meto join their game. They were all nicely spoken and we chatted for a few minutes about football. When one of the boys said “let’s get on with the game” some of the boys extended their arms to shake hands with me and said:“it’s been nice chatting with you.”I have to say Philip that gesture really made my day.It was a delight to meet nicely spoken, well mannered boys, their parents can be justifiably proud of them.Yours sincerely.A delighted and encouraged,Wyndham Northam.

We, in Mundesley, seem to have started a trend!Remember, you read it here first!Kind RegardsMicky PetersTrimingham

Dear Editor, My husband Ron and I are both committed Christians and wanted to show in a positive way that not all Christians are Anti- Gay and we want the Gay community to know, that, God Loves Them Too!.

As we are in the run up to the time Christ died on the cross, this letter will help with our message of God’s love for all people. We held a party on 12th April, with friends whosupported us in our views and were delighted to have the Mayor of Cromer, David Pritchard & Mayoress , Helen Pritchard, and also had a scarf over 30 metres long, that had been made by people from all over the world, by knitting squares of various colours .

Thank you for considering this local, private event for addition in your Crab Tales.Sincerely yours Lynn Roper

Dear Editor,Two new display cabinets have been donated to the RNLI in Cromer. Beryl and Bryan Mansell celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a party and asked family and friends to give donations to the RNLI instead of buying gifts. The Golden Wedding celebrations were held on the Southern Comfort boat from Horning. The happy couple invited 103 family, friends and neighbours to join them for the happy occasion and to help celebrate in style.

The money raised has provided a display cabinetto hold a replica of the Cromer Wartime Lifeboat HF Bailey, which served at the Pier from 1935to 1945 and was of course Henry Bloggs lifeboat.A unanimous decision was made to give proceeds to RNLI Cromer to fund an additional display cabinet to hold a replica model of RNLI Lester, the stations All Weather Lifeboat.

The Ladies Lifeboat Guild Display Cabinet

The cabinets are now on display in the main RNLI Cromer station at the end of the Pier.

Act Now..............to secure your vote. With the European Parliamentary election taking place on Thursday 22nd May, the Local Returning Officer for Nth Norfolk is urging voters to make sure they are registered to vote in time.“People are talking about the elections, but you’ll only be able to have your say on who represents you in the European Parliament if you’re registered to vote by the deadline of Tuesday 6 May”, said Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of NNDC and Local Returning Officer for North Norfolk for the European Parliament election.“Registering is quick and simple. All you have to do is visit : www.northnorfolk.org/elections & print off a registration form or call NNDC Electoral Services on: 516 046 or 516 317.Even if you think you’re already registered, it’s really important to double check. Many people think they are automatically registered because they pay council tax, but this isn’t true. If you’re unsure, you can call your local authority to check.”

Continued From Front Pagecounty from the city of Norwich itself with its wonderful castle and cathedral, Elm Hill and the meandering River Wensum to the outlying towns and villages nestling in the furthest corners of Nelson’s County.

Taken from aircraft as varied as a Piper PA 28 & the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster bomber, and even on scheduled airliners, these photographs cover Norfolk from the wild northern tip of the county including Holkham Bay and Hunstanton, travelling along the coast over the holiday havens of Great Yarmouth, Sheringham and Cromer to the Norfolk Broads and then inland to Norwich and stately homes such as Holkham Hall and Sandringham. This is a book that will delight anyone who has an interest in Norfolk and its landscape.(Far Left ) It is so easy to forget just how many beach huts there are at Wells and if you have not been to Holkham recently the photo (Above) shows just how largeit is and the photo below is of a very lonely Happisburgh Lighthouse.

Cromer looking in and looking out (above & below)

I am in no doubt that this is one of those books that would make a great gift to any fan of Norfolk. Go to their website (see front page). With over 150 pages of photographs, it is well worth the cost of £17.99. PK

Trimingham Sunday The 6thAll the maps and bacon rolls were sold out within the first hour or so.All in all a great turn out, from locally home made marmalade, to you name it, it is there For Sale in one of at least 20 different locations around the village.

As we approached the village we could see at least a hundred groups, walking around with a bag or three attached to their arms.Having advertised this event in the Crab Tales, over a week before Liz King (Above) seems to have got this just right.

Dare I say as much. We did give the village a good deal on their advertising, bearing in mind that the monies raised will be going to their new village hall which is beingplanned for Trimingham.

Even without a map to see where all the garage and yard sales were, it didn’t take very long to spot the houses open for business in their back yards. You have to hand it to everyone involved it was a highly successful way to raise money for their new village hall. You have to hand it to the likes of Liz King and many others, the village is all very involved in all kinds of events to raise the money that is needed.I wish them well. 70 Years Of Being TogetherBack in 1944, on April 8th Ronald & Kathleen Bultitude were married in Norwich.A mere 70 years ago and have enjoyed each other’s company ever since.Back then, Ronald was in the army, before he began to work for a number of years in the fruit and vegetable business as a wholesale fruit and vegetable salesman. These two retired to Mundesley in 1988 and have happily lived there ever since. When I asked how they had been able to stay so happily married for so long Kathleen simply said that it was due to getting over problems quickly and not brooding over them forever.

The couple have one daughter, and two grand-children and one great grandson who is now around 14 years old.I asked Ronald & Kathleen if they had been out to celebrate their 70 years together.Kathleen said their daughter was organising something for them both at Easter. “We do not know where we will be going out to as yet, but it will be fun”.

I found these two such a delightful couple to meet, just a few days after the 8th of April. The couple received a card wishing them all the best from the Queen of England as well as a framed message ( Above left) from one of their neighbours in Fairfield Close.I wish them both many more happy years together. 30 Years LaterOn Friday 4th April from 2.15pm onwards the Norwich & Peterborough in Cromer opened its doors to celebrate their 30th birthday in style.Hosted by the delightful Karen Chastney, the branch manager, who welcomed everyone with a coffee or tea and bits and other bobs of food to celebrate the 30 years since the Building Society has been in Cromer.Nearly everyone seemed to know each other and the chat began straight away before our local MP Norman Lamb turned up to cut the cake with Karen. As a customer, I have always enjoyed bankingat the N&P, particularly with Karen, who is very thoughtful and considerate towards all her customers.I have to date never heard a bad word said of any one of the staff at this business in the town.

With a team of five full time and two part time staff, they seem to have got it just right.Norman Lamb MP turned up at around 2.45pm.and after chatting to everyone who was there, he cut the cake with Karen.

A very pleasant way to spend an hour at the bank in extremely good company.I wish everyone who works there yet another happy 30 years. I wonder, if I will be there then to write about their jolly years. PK

Browne’s Tea RoomMany will remember Aristrocrats Tea Room in Bond Street, Cromer, run for a number of years by Paul and Valarie Godfrey, who now live near Peterborough and nearer to their daughter and family.Back in December last year, after a few months trying to sell the place, they sold the house and business on to Robert and Christine Browne in January this year. After a great deal of hard work on this popular establishment, the new owners opened their doors on April 1st, after midday (avoiding being April fooled) and are now open six days a week from 8.30am till 4.30pm serving their wonderful & tasty meals. When asked what they were doing before, while living in Essex, Christine told me how she had over the last few years been busy looking after her elderly parents, and before doing that she was working in catering.

Meanwhile Robert has been working as a mobile welder, until they moved up to Norfolk in December last year. The couple have enjoyed staying in Cromer for at least 8 years, having owned a flat here before they bought this business.Christine and Robert have a son and daughter, their son is working in Walsham Abbey for Sainsburys, as a warehouse man and their daughter works for UK Power Network.I asked them why Cromer? Their response was very positive as they both had enjoyed being here over the eight years they had stayed in their flat and they really love the whole area.“When this place came onto the Market we just had to move in and take the place on”So what are they were going to doing with this lovely place?“It is all about getting it right, not only for the local residents but also, of course, for all the visitors who come to Cromer, to

enjoy the town and / or the great fare we have to offer them as well of course”

They are indeed a delightful couple and are both welcoming and friendly. That is what they are offering to their customers and I wish them all the very best for a successful future. PK

The summer events I try to get to, but the New Years Firework display is an absolute must,

Congratulations.. .......to all my friends and family who were born in the 1940’s, 50’s, and 60’sFirst, we survived being born to mothers who smoked &/or drank Sherry while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos...They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, bread and dripping, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer. After that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.Take away food was limited to fish & chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn’t open on a Sunday, somehow we didn’t starve to death! We shared one soft drink with 4 friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner st ore and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers and Bubble Gum.We ate cupcakes, white bread & real butter, milk from the cow and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because......We Were Always Outside Playing! We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the street-lights came on. No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O..K.We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, or colour TV, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms.......We Had Friends and we went outside and found them!We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.Only girls had pierced ears!We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time....We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!Mum didn’t have to go to work to help dad make ends meet because we didn’t need to keep up with the Jones’s!Not everyone made the rugby/football/cricket/netball team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MeritOur teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and throw the blackboard rubber at us if they thought we weren’t concentrating . We can string sentences together and spell and have proper conversations because of a good, solid three R’s education. Our parents would tell us to ask a stranger to help us cross the road. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.They actually sided with the law!Our parents didn’t invent stupid names for their kids like ‘Kiora’ and ‘Blade’ and ‘Ridge’ and ‘Vanilla’

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned How To Deal With It All !And YOU are one of them!Congratulations! You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good. And while you are at it, forward it to yourkids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Thanks to David Thorne for this

It will take 2 years to bring our local ambulancetrust up to a good standard, Norfolk’s top ambulance boss has claimed. The new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Trust, Dr Anthony Marsh was out-lining his plans at an Act on Ambulances meeting in Cromer earlier this month – his first public speaking event since he took over the role in December.Dr Marsh told the audience that the average ambulance response time for North Norfolk had fallen from 27 mins for life-threatening emergencies to 18 mins over the first three months of 2014, which he said showed signs of progress. However there was still work to be done, with the campaigners’ latest statistics showing that in February this year only 35% of calls for the

district were being met within the 8 min. target – well below the 75pc expectation of Trusts. The ambulance chief explained that his first goal was to ensure safety of both patients & staff by investing in new vehicles, additional “home grown” paramedic paramedics, and more ambulance hours which would then lead to improvements in response times. He was also critical of his predecessors’ attempts at rota redesigns, which had an over-reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles rather than Double Staffed Ambulances. He answered a variety of questions which included the crisis in A&E, long-term funding for the service, and contracts for private ambulances.

Denise Burke, who chaired the meeting and is Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said: “Dr Marsh has set some clear priorities for turning around the trust and improving performance in North Norfolk. It will take time to recruit and train new staff and get more ambulances on the road but we welcome his ambitions.‘Act on Ambulances’ will monitor progress closely to ensure that North Norfolk gets the ambulance service it needs for its ageing population in remote rural/coastal areas and influx of tourists.Any local residents experiencing issues with the ambulance service can contact us for help in raising the matter with the trust. We have invited Dr Marsh back to North Norfolk in a year’s time to see what progress has been made.”Photos: Dr Anthony Marsh, chief executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, Denise Burke and Matt Broad, the trust’s general manager for Norfolk.

Get Involved With Your Doctors’ Practice! When we visit our GP we are often unaware of just what goes on behind the scenes at a busy Practice. Being a regular ‘user’ of our own local Practice – not only for myself but for other members of my family – I was pleased to be able to join the Patient Reference Group (PRG) at our surgery since it enabled me to understand more of how systems work within the NHS and also to give an input from the patients’ perspective on various issues relating to our Practice. We meet every three months to discuss matters ranging from surgery facilities and services, to helping compile Patient Questionnaires and also editing a regular Newsletter for patients. Matters under discussion recently have included patient record sharing, early dementia diagnosis, upgrading building facilities, the problem of missed appointments and use of the internet for booking appointments, etc. As you can see, a wide range of issues! We also have visiting speakers, sharing their expertise in matters linked to the provision of good health care in Norfolk.

I have been greatly impressed by just how much work is done by the Practice staff to ensure thatthings run smoothly, especially with all the new demands being made by what seem to be the never ending changes to NHS systems. As members of the PRG we are invited to attend conferences held by the North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group where we have learned more about the new structure within the NHS and have been able to contribute our opinions on important issues concerning local services. It is so easy to take our health service for granted and, perhaps, sometimes criticise the service we receive. I have certainly had my eyes opened since becoming a member of our PRG and have nothing but admiration for the commitment of our surgery team. If YOU feel you could contribute to your local Practice, why not enquire about joining your PRG. We have many older or retired people living in Nth Norfolk who do a great job and possibly make up the majority of PRG members – it would be good to see more young representatives of the community become involved as well!

Eleven People.... .....were hanging on a rope under a helicopter.Ten men and one woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all so they decided that one had to leave, because otherwise they were all going to fall. They weren’t able to choose that person, until the woman gave a very touching speech. She said that she would voluntarily let go of therope because, as a woman she was used to givingup everything for her husband and kids or for men in general, and was used to always making sacrifices with little in return.

As soon as she finished her speech, as she anticipated, all the men started clapping.

Thanks to Ingrid Campbell for this.
