Student CPR Training

SouthWest Edgecombe High SchoolFall 2013

Today’s Goals Increase knowledge and

awareness of “hands-only” CPR Learn what to do in a crisis (and

what not to do) Practice continuous chest

compressions Prepare to save

someone’s life

If you witness the sudden collapse of an individual…

…you need to be prepared to perform hands-only CPR.

What does the acronym

CPR stand for?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

CPR keeps blood oxygen flowing to the brain as much as possible to preserve brain

function.

Anyone can learn hands-only CPR. You do not have to be a nurse or doctor.

There are just a few things to remember.

Check the person to see if they are conscious. Tap them and shout, “Hey, are

you okay?”

If you get no reply, then…

CALL 911!

Get help on the way!

Next, begin chest compressions.

During chest compressions,

place hands in the center of the chest;

keep arms straight; compress chest hard and fast

at the rate of 100 compressions per minute;

compress chest at least 2 inches deep (for ages 8 and up).

Stop CPR if…

you see obvious signs of life; an AED (automated external

defibrillator) becomes available; other trained personnel arrive to

help; you become too exhausted to

continue; or the scene becomes unsafe.

Above all, remember:

Watch this short video on how to perform hands-only CPR.
