The Certified Packaging Laboratory Professional (CPLP) program recognizes your development

and excellence in packaging laboratory professionals. CPLP certification is particularly valuable for

enhancing the credibility of people involved with ISTA testing and ISTA certified laboratory operations.

ISTA will be offering CPLP Technician and Technologist Webinars on November 18th and 20th. It will be conducted by Larry Dull, ISTA's

Vice President, Sustainable Solutions and who is also a CPLP-Professional. The CPLP exam will be available online after the webinar or

in paper format upon request.

Registration Fee: $695.00 for one course or $1,250.00 for both courses.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants will receive online access to materials in advance of the Webinar. Only ISTA Members may take the

Forest Biomaterials from North Carolina StateUniversity, Master degrees in EngineeringManagement and Timber Engineering fromUniversity of West Hungary.

Laszlo currently serves as the Director at theCenter for Package and Unit Load Design. TheCenter for Packaging and Unit Load Design is aresearch and testing center focusing ondeveloping innovative technologies andinformation to optimize the global distribution ofgoods.

His responsibilities at the Center for Package andUnit Load Design include managing multipleapplied research projects funded to developdesign methodologies to create more sustainablepackaging solutions. Using the principles of LeanManagement to create an innovative environmentwhere researchers and students can worktogether to help the packaging industry. Laszloleads and manages a group of 14 laboratorysupervisors and technicians. He is developingstate-of-the-art training system to help studentsgain knowledge faster and more effectivelythrough hands-on and minds-on projects.

In addition to directing the Center for Packagingand Unit Load Design, Laszlo has been anAssistant Professor of Practice at VirginiaPolytechnic and State Institute teachingPackaging Engineering since 2010. His primary

He serves as the Chair of the Enrollment ManagementCommittee and the co-advisor of the Institute of Packaging Professionals at Virginia Tech student club.

Laszlo has received several awards, distinctions and fellowships including: Certificate of Leadership Excellence – Virginia Tech (2014);George Mara – Excellence in Writing and Research Award (2013); North Carolina State University Provost Fellowship (2007); OutstandingGraduate Student Award, Faculty of Wood Science, University of West Hungary (2007); Hungarian National Academic Scholarship Award,(2007); National Scientific Student Research Competition, 3rd Place (2007); ERASMUS scholarship; Study Abroad Program (2006);Hungarian National Academic Scholarship Award, (2006); National Scientific Student Research Competition, Special Award (2005);Scientific Student Research Competition, 1st Place (2005); and Scientific Student Research Competition, Special Award (2004).

Aside from packaging, travel remains Laszlo’s main hobby. He enjoys exploring new places and meeting new people. He has traveleda lot but his bucket list of additional places to visit remains full!

In his spare time, Laszlo enjoys reading. He consistently has a pile of books ready to read, yet he continues to purchase new ones to addto the pile and never has time to read them all.

He feels so obsessed with packaging that he keeps analyzing all the “cool” new packages while grocery shopping, which drives his wifecrazy and significantly slows down their shopping!

Dr. Siripong Malasri, Christian Brothers UniversityDr. Siripong Malasri, often known as Pong, currently serves as Dean of Engineering at Christian Brothers University (CBU)in Memphis, Tennessee. He also serves as Director of CBU’s Healthcare Packaging Consortium. He earned his PhD inCivil Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1982. In the past, he was a registered professional engineer in the Stateof Florida and is currently registered in the State of Tennessee.

Pong was instrumental in establishing the packaging program at CBU. In 2001, while he was Dean of Engineering, apackaging class taught by a Packaging Engineer at FedEx was offered as an engineering elective. Between 2003 and

2005, over $500K worth of packaging lab equipment was acquired under a $3M grant from the Assisi Foundation of Memphis and inOctober 2009, the packaging lab became an ISTA Certified Testing Laboratory.

On June 1, 2005, Pong stepped down as Dean of Engineering to have more time to work on packaging. During this time, a B.S. and M.S.in Engineering Management with a Packaging Concentration were established. In 2012, packaging was established as a departmentwithin the School of Engineering at CBU. In June 2014, Pong was reappointed as Dean of Engineering.

In June 2010, the university formed the Healthcare Packaging Consortium and under Pong’s leadership, the consortium currently haseleven active member companies: FedEx, Medtronic, Bayer Consumer Care, MicroPort Orthopedics, Olympus Surgical TechnologiesAmerica, Plastic Ingenuity, Smith & Nephew, The Pallet Factory, The Royal Group, Wright Medical, and WS Packaging. Pong has workedon various consortium research projects related to plastic tote distribution, wooden pallet properties, and sustainability. In October 2013,the consortium and Cloud Publications (India) designated the International Journal of Advanced Packaging Technology as the consortium’sofficial journal, where he serves as its Editor-in-Chief.

Pong formed a TAPPI student chapter at CBU in 2012 and has served as its faculty advisor. He has promoted the ISTA CPLP programamong CBU packaging students. To date, five CBU packaging students have passed the CPLP Technician Examination. At CBU, heteaches PKG 101 Introduction to Packaging, PKG 201 Packaging Seminars, PKG 490 Packaging Project, and PKG 495 PackagingInternship. He plans to offer new courses in the near future; PKG 202 Packaging Lab, PKG 410 Packaging Sustainability, and ENGM 644Transport Packaging.

Pong has received several awards and recognitions including: Induction to the Pi Alpha Kappa Honorary Society by the Mid-South Chapterof Institute of Packaging Professionals in 2009; Award of Excellence from the Memphis-Joint Engineers Council in 2006; OutstandingEngineer of the Year Award from the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers in 2004; and Distinguished Lasallian Educator Awardfrom CBU in 1997.

In his spare time, Pong keeps his body fit by walking and swimming. When he had more time before his packaging research, he used toenjoy playing classical guitar. For now he enjoys listening to classical music and of course appreciates Memphis BBQ!
