Introduction to the Project:

You are a member of the Ambassadors of La Huasteca Canyon committee specializing in developing and implementing parks tourism programs. Current tourism attractions within Monterrey include La Cola del Caballo, Las Grutas del Garcia and Chipinque. ASFM hopes to put on display a permanent information center about the Huasteca by the entrance of the school to showcase the beauty and elegance of the Huasteca Canyon by highlighting the natural gems and geological attractions within the canyon.

You have been asked to apply your knowledge of the concepts below to design a product that could be used in the parks tourist center to illustrate & highlight rock formations in Huasteca Canyon. The product that you design will be on display for public viewing at Celebrate Huasteca! – A celebration of Huasteca hosted by ASFM during finals week.

MATH INSTRUCTIONS

Increasing Tourism to la Huasteca

Dear Math Mythology Experts,

You are being contacted on behalf of Problem Solving Inc. to address the need for attracting greater tourism to the Huasteca area of Monterrey. Huasteca, as you know, is a place of wonder and beauty and attracts hikers, rock climbers, cyclists, and motorists every day. As Math Mythology Experts we are asking you to help us bring more visitors to Huasteca to enjoy its vast canyons and deep-rooted cultural history.

We would like you to create a myth or legend that would add to the curiosity and excitement that tourists already have through story telling. Myths and legends can be about very good people and acts of real kindness but many of the stories introduce us to creatures that you would not want to meet, especially in the darkness of the canyon under the moonlit, starry sky. Problem Solving Inc. has determined that an enchanting and mystical story about the canyon will increase the amount of visitors and help protect our beloved Huasteca.

Remember the goal is to increase tourism by creating a story that will make visitors curious and excited to visit the canyon while including the math concepts, therefore creativity is essential. Attached to this letter you will find a grading rubric and an example of a short excerpt from one student’s mythical legend from England along with the “Math Myth Explanation Sheet” for that section of their story.

If you are not sure what a myth or legend is or want to see examples check out this website:

Example excerpt from: Slaying the Dragon and Cheating the Devil

When was the last time you saw a dragon then? A real, live, roaring, terrifying, blood-curdling dragon, the stuff of nightmares; long tail, sharp talons, huge teeth and breathing fire. Myths of dragons eating men in an English marketplace (one man only lost a leg) and soldiers (one soldier left headless) in a battle in Wales totaling in people being consumed were common.

You've never seen one? Well, to be honest, not many people have. Once upon a time, they were quite a common sight in England and Wales, but it's been many years since anyone last saw one. In fact, the last time one was seen was almost a 94 years ago. When winter turns to spring and temperatures rise 60 degrees from -10 degrees Celsius, the 50 degree weather is perfect for dragons to take flight.

Dragons were not the only unusual sights in times past. Giants were a part of everyday life as well. Some were positive, some were negative. It all depended how far their location was to heart of the City of Love. Giants who lived closer to the city saw smaller value in evil ways than those who lived farther. The city limits had its share of giants and was home to one of the better ones. He went by the name of Piers Shonks.

He stood 2.3 x 107 cm tall even without his great boots on. His home was on an island in Shonks' Moat, Peppsall Field from where, as Lord of the Manor, he ruled his land fairly and with kindness.

Returning from his travels late one day, Piers Shonks was dismayed and angry at what he saw. The crops in his field, which had been growing tall and strong, were now damaged. Crops that once stood meters tall were cut in fourths now only standing of a meter high. It took him only a moment to realize what was behind the attack. This was the work of a dragon. Well, he wasn't going to stand for this. If he didn't deal with the problem, his people would find the coming winter even tougher than usual.

Gathering his 40 best men around him, he and the 24 men set off to hunt the dragon. The quest would be full of danger, there was that of or 29.17% of them could even be killed; there was no choice. If they failed to deal with the monster, then it would return to wreak more death and destruction.

Originally Written By: Brent Pelham, Hertfordshire, England and adapted by Noorani and Hernandez

EXAMPLE: Math Myth Explanation Sheet

Program used: Microsoft Word Equation Editor

1. Myths of people consumed by dragons: Add fractions unlike denominatorsIn order to add the fractions you need common denominators. So we make equivalent fractions of each and then add.

2. Years of last dragon sighting: Exponential PowerIn order to use powers you multiply the base by itself as many times as the exponent indicates.

Exponential Form: 94 yearsStandard Form: 6561 years

3. Temperature for dragon flight: Add/ Subtract IntegersIn order to add and subtract integers you find the absolute value of each integer. In this case the signs are different so, the integer with the highest absolute value indicates the sign of your answer. Then we find the difference between the two numbers using subtraction.

-10 + 60 = 50 degrees. 60 has a larger value so the answer is positive.The we subtract 60 – 10 = 50 degrees when dragons fly

When you make your Math Myth Explanation Sheet, you would continue until you have explained 2 examples of each topic.

Chemical Weathering

Chemical reactions break down the bonds holding rocks together, causing them to fall apart, forming smaller pieces. Chemical weathering is more common in locations where there is a lot of water because water is important to many of the chemical reactions that can take place. Warmer temperatures are also more friendly to chemical weathering. The most common types of chemical weathering are listed below.

● Oxidation takes place when oxygen combines with other elements in rocks to form new types of rock. These new substances are usually much softer, and thus easier for other forces to break apart.

● Hydrolysis occurs when water combines with the substances in rocks to form new types of substances, which are softer than the original rock types. These allows other forces such as mechanical weathering to more easily break them apart.

● Carbonation takes place when carbon dioxide reacts with certain types of rocks forming a solution, that can easily be carried away by water

1. How do you think chemical weathering has affected the rocks in the Huasteca canyon? Why? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Acid Rain

● Acid rain describes any form of precipitation with high levels of nitric and sulfuric acids. It can also occur in the form of snow, fog, and tiny bits of dry material that settle to Earth.

● Rotting vegetation and erupting volcanoes release some chemicals that can cause acid rain, but most acid rain falls because of human activities. The biggest culprit is the burning of fossil fuels by coal-burning power plants, factories, and automobiles.

● When humans burn fossil fuels, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are released into the atmosphere. These chemical gases react with water, oxygen, and other substances to form mild solutions of sulfuric and nitric acid.

2. Do you think Monterrey has acid rain? Explain why or why not.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________20

Page 21: cpb-us-w2.wpmucdn.com€¦  · Web viewName: ______________________ Partners: _______________________________________________Period: ___ Celebrate La Huasteca Canyon__________ Introduction

Plant Acids

Plants can also cause chemical weathering. Plants produce weak acids that dissolve certain minerals in rocks. Lichens are a type of living thing that produce weak acids capable of dissolving the minerals in rocks.

3. Do you think that a single plant is capable of turning parent rock into topsoil by means of mechanical and chemical weathering during its lifetime? Explain why or why not.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTIONS

1) Interview Questions -- Before hearing our “guest speakers” talk about the Huasteca Canyon, it is required that you write down 8 questions that you can ask on your “Interview Questions” sheet about the canyon based on the 5 Themes of Geography. You will use this sheet with you to the record the answers to your questions. This sheet must be submitted for evaluation.2) Selecting your Geography Pieces – Each of the 5 Themes of Geography must be represented somewhere in your project. Therefore, in your group it is required that you divide up the 5 Themes of Geography amongst yourselves.

Each group member must cover at least two of the pieces. All 8 need to be researched! These 8 Pieces Include: 1) Location (Relative and Absolute) 2) Place (Physical) 3) Place (Traditions) 4) Movement (People)5) Human-Environment Interaction (Depend on) 6) Human-Environment Interaction (Adapt to) 7) Human Environment Interaction (Modify) 8) Region (Vegetation/Climate)

***Once you have decided which piece you will cover, write it down on your “5 Themes of Geography Graphic Organizer.”

3) Research your two pieces of the 5 Themes of Geography. This will require that you:

A) Finding appropriate sources to use for your research (guest speakers, photographs, books, internet, etc). You need to use a minimum of THREE sources to answer your “pieces” of the 5 Themes. Two of your sources can be the information you collect from the guest speakers. You can decide from where you get your third source (provided that it gives you the information that you need) – ie. Internet, newspaper, photo, etc.

B) Taking notes about what you have learned about your “piece” in the middle column of your “5 Themes of Geography Graphic Organizer.” Once you have enough research, set aside sheet until you are able to share your information with your group. After talking with your group, you can decide how you will apply this information in your project (Complete column 3). Hand in to be evaluated.

C) Complete 3 Baloney Detection Kit Sheets evaluating your sources.
