Schedule

Parents and Community Members,

It’s hard to believe that we are past the midpoint of the 2016-17 school

year. We had a busy start of the school year with several technology

related initiatives. We continue to focus on the core work of teaching

and learning with a strong focus on the Rigor and Relevance Frame-

work. Additionally, teachers continue to work on implementing in-

structional strategies that engage student learning using technology.

If you can believe it, we are in the early stages of planning for the

2017-2018 school year, starting with the registration process.

Registration for current CVHS students began in January. Counselors

have been visiting with students in their math classes.

I want to extend a thank you to parents, staff members, and students

that have attended our Site Council meetings during the first semes-

ter. During these meetings teachers, parents, and students share their

insights to current topics in our schools. We have 3 meetings left dur-

ing the second semester; the next of which will be on February 23rd,

please note this date has changed. As we move forward much of our

attention will be focused on topics related to budget for next school

year. I encourage you to visit the site council page on our website

under the Parent Zone menu. There you can find our Continuous

Improvement Plan.

I always want to remind you that teachers are available at least twice a

week for the second half of lunch for tutoring. You can view the tutor-

ing schedule on our web page by clicking academics tab and scrolling

down to the tutoring tab. We appreciate parent connection in checking

grades via the parent portal and encouraging students to attend tutoring

when needed. With the completion of the first four and half weeks of

the second semester, grades have been posted in Infinite Campus.

As always I thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Mike De La Torre

of meeting with students to go over

their course registration for next school

year. Each student will have a chance to

meet with their counselor on an as-

signed day through their math class to

get any questions answered.

PreACT Students that are looking for practice

for the ACT should sign up for the Pre-

ACT in the bookstore through February

17th. The test will be held on campus

Saturday, February 25th from 8 am - 12

ACCUPLACER TESTING On April 11th and 13th, students in Al-

gebra 2 classes will be taking the CGCC

math accuplacer test on campus. This

will allow them to potentially take their

math class next year as a dual credit

class. Students will be provided with

instructions through their math class on

how to be prepared to take this test. The

reading accuplacer test will be offered

on April 12th and 20th for those stu-

dents that are signed up for a dual en-

rollment class next year that requires

the reading test. Students will be noti-

fied on how to sign up for this as it will

be during lunch hours or after school.

AP TESTING Here is this year’s AP exam sched-

ule. Campo Verde High School does

not participate in late testing, so it is

imperative your student be present on

their test date. Please do not schedule

Advanced Placement is unlike dual en-

rollment in that students must take the

AP exam offered in May, and earn a

qualifying score for the college or uni-

versity they are planning to attend, in

order to receive any college credits for

their efforts.

Taking the Advanced Placement exams

is an important part of all AP courses.

Campo Verde High School desires that

all students take AP exams for the AP

classes that they have taken. Scoring

well on an AP exam can often earn stu-

dents college credit for their high school

class, saving a significant amount on

college tuition.

For the 2017 AP exams, students at

Campo Verde High School will be reg-

istering online. This registration will

take a few minutes and can be complet-

ed from any computer with internet

access. Instead of being limited to

bookstore hours and having to send

your student to school with cash or a

check, you will now be able to pay with

a credit or debit card (or mail in pay-

ment if desired).

This year each AP exam costs $97.00.

Students requiring financial assistance

that qualify for free or reduced lunch

should contact Sarah McManus in the

counseling office before registration

starts to learn more.

Online Exam registration will begin on

Monday, January 30, 2017 at 7:00 AM

and end on Wednesday, March 1, 2017

at 11:59 PM. In order to register, stu-

dents should click on the link provided

on the school website or visit

www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/030696

to register .To complete registration,

students must answer all of the required

questions. Registration is not complete

until students have printed or saved the

pdf of the confirmation page that is pro-

vided at the end. We know that parents

may desire to register their students for

exams. We strongly recommend that

parents and students are both present

while registering to ensure that the cor-

rect exams are ordered.

Campo Verde High School is excited to

offer families the service of Total Reg-

istration because it helps the AP regis-

tration process to be much more effi-

cient and convenient for all parties in-

volved.

Here are the important dates for the

registration process:

Mon, Jan 30, 2017 at 7:00 AM -

Registration Begins

Wed, Mar 1, 2017 at 11:59 PM -

Registration Ends

Mon, Mar 6, 2017 at 11:59 PM -

Registrations that have not been

paid for will be cancelled and

exams will not be ordered.

Please contact Sarah McManus,

[email protected] , if

you have any questions.

Here are some other bits of information

regarding the AP process:

Once tests have been ordered there

will be a pre-administration session

so all participants will have census

info pre-bubbled

If you are still unsure if your stu-

dent should take the AP exam,

communicate with the teacher for

insight into your student’s progress

and practice tests scores

Registered students will be remind-

ed of test dates and made aware of

start times and locations by the end

of April

Students must bring their own ma-

terials (calculators, pens, pencils) to

the test session

Scores will be available to students

online at apscore.org in July

Corporate Academy Year 1 students spent the

day at Able Engineering discovering what the corporate world looks like in real life while also learning about the Aerospace Engineering industry. Students learned about their corporate cul-ture, had a tour of the operational facili-ty and had a valua-ble Q&A session with their leadership and COO.

This is the 4th year Able has partnered with Corporate Academy to pro-vide a look inside the business world and help students build on what they learn in the class-room.

CVHS Veterans Heritage Project

The dedicated students of VHP have been incredi-bly busy this semester. With the huge task of pub-lishing the first East Valley Edition of Since You Asked: Arizona Veterans Share Their Memories many have logged nearly 100 hours of community service. The Campo Verde Chapter of VHP has had a record-breaking year! Our students’ efforts have resulted in a 30% increase in the number of veterans interviewed from last year. The chapter was awarded a $250 grant from VHP in recognition of this fete. The book is being sent off to the pub-lisher on February 15 and the group will celebrate a job well done! How many high school students can say they conducted interviews, learned a design program, created a book and became published authors? This year, 18 Campo Verde accom-plished just that!

The group’s efforts will shift to planning the Book Signing Gala which will be held in the Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert McCauley Conference Center on April 22. It is sure to be a grand affair with many groups from Campo honoring our veter-ans. Students from choir, jazz band, SoulMatic Rhythm, AFJROTC, art, and Paws for a Cause will be in attendance along with all veterans whose stories appear in the book.

Congratulations to Ms. Diggs and to all the VHP students!

A Cinderella Affair

For the second year, Paws for a Cause asked those in our campus community to clean out their closets and donate their old prom dresses to girls in the valley who dream of wearing a gown to the

ball. A Cinderella Affair is a non-profit organization whose mission is to get the unused dresses out of the closets and into the hands of the girls who will love them. Dresses, shoes and costume jewelry are collected through schools just like ours. Then on one, magical weekend, the doors are opened for young ladies hoping to find that special dress. No questions asked. They only have to show a cur-rent, high school ID card. They do not have to jus-tify why they are there. Each girl can shop and find a dress that she loves and take it home for free.

Students set a goal of besting last year’s number of 72 dresses. Our awesome Coyote Family really stepped up and this year we have collected 97 dresses! Way to go Campo! Thank you for your support.

CV Fixer Upper

Volunteers from CVHS Paws for a Cause have been sprucing up the portable classrooms this month. Ms. Diggs encourages her students to “Find a need. Fill a need.” Taking the time to see opportunities to serve in their community is easier than expected. Most teachers and students would agree that the portable classrooms on campus are less than awesome. They have a funky smell at times, there are bugs and they feel, well, like the trailers they are. When asked what would make it a little better, the teachers said, “Fresh paint.” It just so happens that Paws for a Cause had leftover paint from the numerous paint-a-thons they have completed and they offered their assistance. It takes about 5 hours per classroom, and the end result puts a smile on the faces of the teachers and their students! Great job, Paws for a Cause!

GC105 Service Management Projects

Campo Verde has a unique and impactful class on campus that seeks to get students in the habit of regular service in their community and teach them valuable, transferrable skills in project man-agement, marketing, goal setting, organizational and time management. Teacher, Kathy Diggs challenged students this quarter to find and fill a need on our campus. “The results have been AMAZING! These students are brilliant, inspired and creative. They were skeptics, but I truly be-lieve they have learned more from this project than anything else we have done so far!” said Ms. Diggs. Here are some brief synopses of their projects.

EAT FOR CHANGE

Students Malek Sayed, Chris Koselka, Taylor Gambee, and Scott Hix have organized a Chipotle fundraiser at the San Tan location to raise money for the PE Department. Coach Cor-nell and his department do so much to serve oth-ers, it seems fitting that they be on the receiving end of service for a change! On Friday, Febru-ary 17, when students mention Campo Verde's Paws 4 a Cause community service club, Chipotle will donate 50% of the proceeds to the PE Department. Download the flyer.

SPACKLE SPECTACULAR

Students Benjamin Miller, Vincent Chang, Jacob Adams, and Devin Ross, have organized a pro-ject and trained over a dozen students to remove staples from the walls of our school and repair damaged corners in all hallways by filling them spackle in preparation for painting. DODGEBALL

Sydney Cooke, Alyssa Beccue, and Olivia Cain have organized a dodgeball tournament at Cam-po Verde High School on March 8th from 5-8 pm in the campus gymnasium to raise money for fireworks at graduation. Winners will have their prom tickets purchased for them! TEACHER ANGEL TREE

Students Richard Yan, Tyler Hunyada, Blake Chambal and Ben Hino have developed a way for Campo Families to adopt a teacher and help

provide specific supplies for their class-rooms. The tree will be in the front office. Items requested are all under $5. STOP n’ SWAP

Students do not like coming to class un-prepared. Inspired by a European honor system of “give what you can and take what you need” stu-dents Raelin Prieto, Mackenna Healey, Reagan Higgins and Kelsie Horne created a helpful school-wide community supply drive for students. Flyers and posters were hung around school to promote the pro-gram. Buckets were placed in the restrooms, by the water fountains and in the cafetería. In the buckets were paper, pencils, lead and pens. P.F.A.M.

Personal. Family. Attitude. Management. Some students just need someone to talk to. Nothing stressful, but a friendly face that might make the difference between a rotten day and a good day! Students Mya White, Morgan Watkins and Sydney Fuller have hearts for their fellow Coy-otes and they want to make a positive difference in the lives of others. They held their first meet-ing after school on Monday, Feb. 13 to provide a safe place for people to come and build relation-ships with positive people. RECYCLING

Campo Verde's newest recycling program made an appearance after receiving eight new recy-cling bins from the Town of Gilbert. The efforts of Keegan Acton, Sam Burns, Megan Gentile, and Sydney Shevalier made this possible by getting donations, decorating recycling bins, and creat-ing campaign posters around campus. This pro-gram was geared towards water bottle recycling during lunch periods to profit the school. Campo Verde's S.P.I.C.E. kids are in on the program by aiding the school in sort-ing the recycling materi-als.

Game Design—Spark League

The very first Spark League Game Jam Advanced took place on December 5-6, 2016 at the Gilbert Xavier University campus, sponsored by Google and the Town of Gilbert. Select teams of Campo Verde game

development students committed themselves to this exhausting two-day competition.

Upon arrival at the event, the students felt very welcomed by the Town of Gilbert staff. The two teams of students chose creative team titles: “Team String Beans" and “Team String Cheese.” From a high school student’s perspective, they expressed that this was an experience unlike any other. Although they went in not knowing what to expect, the students came out of the Game Jam with a much deeper under-

standing of coding a substantial reality game.

The students watched a water conservation presentation conducted by the Town of Gilbert Water Resource Coordinator, Haley Paul. This gave the student game-designers the opportunity to add an ele-ment of reality to their games. The Town of Gilbert are being very proactive and exercising creative ways to jump on the issue before water shortage becomes a true reality. The game competition task was to

design a PSA, or public service announcement, game with the theme of water conservation.

The students were pleased to know they could use one of the programming languages that they are cur-rently learning in Game Development class at Campo Verde High. They chose to use GML (Game Maker Language) and Game Maker Studio game engine software for the PSA game. They had two days to com-plete the game and were allowed to work on it at home. One of the Campo Verde High Teams, Team String Beans opted for the no-sleep option to complete their game in time. The staff provided food along with giveaways of portable chargers and mini drones throughout the two days of the competition.

Attendees were given a bag filled with different Spark League accessories like shirts, water bottles, etc.

Team String Bean’s game, designed and coded (over 100 lines of code) by Robert O’Connor and Kurt Vashaw won second place “Model Citizen” Award in the competition. Their game was a real-world simula-tion where the player is allotted a small amount of money to start and was given the task of upgrading pipes, spreading awareness of water conservation, and upgrading water plants to produce more wa-ter. The game submission called “Watta” was a multi-room simulation to obtain supplies and resources to use in the main game hub. The objective of the game was to produce a certain amount of water as fast as possible while working with limited funding. They are definitely looking forward to the next Spark League competition in April with the hopes of winning the 1st place award. The Watta game will be up on the Spark League Website shortly: https://

CVHS Soccer Soccer season for both boys and girls has come to an end, the Coyote family is proud of what both the varsity boys and girls programs achieved this season. The girls made it to the state quarter finals as a young squad overcoming challenges due to injuries. With losses only to the top 4 ranked teams in the division all by 2 to 1 scores. The boys made a run to the championship game of the state tournament with an undefeated season, 25 - 0. On Saturday night they lost the championship game 3 to 1 to North Canyon.

Nurse’s Note:

To Send or Not to Send?

As we enter into flu and cold season, it can be hard to know what is reason enough to keep

your child home. If your child should have any of the following they should be kept home:

Fever of 100 degrees or higher

Eyes that have redness, itching, or drainage

Rashes that have open blisters or drainage

Vomiting

Diarrhea

If they have been diagnosed with an infection (strep, etc.) that requires the use of antibiotics

they must have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours before they may return to school.

It is safe for them to return to class once they are fever free and/or no longer vomiting/diarrhea

for 24 hours without the use of medication such as Tylenol or Imodium.

During this season you can help to ensure your children stay well by helping to encourage

healthy habits such as good nutrition, plenty of rest, adequate hydration, flu shots and cough-
