COWRIES, GOLD AND DIGITAL CASHTYPES OF MONEY

  • EXHIBITION

Money makes the world go round – people need it for daily purchases or to pay for leisure activities. Global economic transactions would not work without money. In fact, there is hardly any process in our lives that does not depend on money. This exhibition brings to life the long history of money from barter trade to today‘s globalized economy, showing a broad range of materials that have been used for producing money, like dog‘s teeth, wood, leather and modern polymer foils. The rapid pace of progress in information and telecommunication technology and its impact on money and payments poses ever new challenges to the economic system. Cashless payments have become increasingly widespread and avail themselves of a steady flow of technical innovations.Societies with their manifold cultures and ways of life have brought forth just as diverse types of money from cowrie shells to electronic cash.
