Thank you for your ongoing support and prayers. The Leprosy Mission Australia cannot do its work without you!

Because of your faithfulness, so many people affected by leprosy are now cured.

Often the road to a cure is long and hard – but your support makes it possible. Poverty, distance and stigma makes it difficult for many people with leprosy to actually get the treatment they need to be cured. Just look at what happened to Nagammal (see page 4–5).

Curing a person is just the beginning. Leprosy may leave a person with nerve damage or disabilities. So they need further care to overcome these complications. And of course, they need to be restored and accepted within their communities.

This simply mirrors what Jesus himself did for people affected by leprosy and other sicknesses. He cured them of their diseases. He provided the care they needed so they could see again or walk again. And he restored them to himself and declared they were fit to be part of His Kingdom!

Thank you for being willing to be part of God’s work. Willing to reach out, willing to go, willing to give.

“If you are willing, you can make me clean.” And moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand, and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Mark 1: 40–45

Thank you for choosing to Cure, Care and Restore today for a leprosy-free world tomorrow.

Do you remember Nagammal from the 2015 India floods? This young woman was discovered dripping wet and hungry during the disaster.

Her husband had already abandoned her due to leprosy. Nagammal had been living for 17 years in a run-down goat shed which was destroyed during the flood. When she was found during flood relief activities, she hadn’t eaten in 4 days.

Workers were shocked at Nagammal’s condition. But they could help her because people like you have given so generously.

With heavy hearts, they treated and bandaged her multiple ulcers. Nagammal had no fingers or toes due to leprosy and she could not walk. She could only crawl. This made her knee ulcers infected during the floods.

From shamed, terrified and abandoned…

Nagammal was found shivering and starving during the India floods

in November 2015.

What an incredible change, because of your generosity!

With your support, ramps mean Nagammal can

enter and leave her house in her wheelchair.

International Program Manager

Phil Hamilton was there on behalf of our

Australian supporters to welcome

Nagammal into her new home. With no fingers, Nagammal

needs this modified spoon to feed herself.

TAKE ACTION

Change suffering to joy in the life of a leprosy-affected person like Nagammal. Simply fill out the coupon on the back cover

with how much you wish to give. Then send it

back to us.

The stigma attached to leprosy meant Nagammal lost years of her life to this disease. Before field workers found her, she was denied the medical care she needed. Her neighbours refused to take her to hospital. Her obvious deformities meant she could not take local transport to seek help.

But all that has changed… and it’s because you had the heart to help people like Nagammal.

After the floods, The Leprosy Mission project team visited Nagammal regularly. They cared for her ulcers, cleaning and bandaging them as needed. They arranged to take her to The Leprosy Mission hospital for further tests and treatment. Other interventions include:

• A specially designed modified spoon so Nagammal can feed herself independently. Thanks to you.

• Reconstructive surgeries planned to fix her ankle joint so she can walk again! No more crawling, thanks to you!

• A wheelchair so she can move around without help and to prevent further injuries to her leprosy-affected limbs. No more festering ulcers, thanks to you!

Apart from her medical treatment, one of Nagammal’s greatest needs was a place to call home.

So imagine how exciting it was to cut the ribbon on Nagammal’s new house, complete with accessible ramps and toilets. No more dilapidated goat shed… again, it’s thanks to you!

Nagammal is now settling into her new home with a newfound self-confidence and dignity.

Thank you for giving Nagammal a new life. It’s such a joy to see her now with a smile on her face! You’ve been such a blessing to her.

Now smiling, cared for and

holding her head high You’ve given Nagammal

dignity and independence!

The ribbon is cut on

What you’ve helped achieveThe good news is that over 16 million leprosy cases have been cured over the last 20 years! But leprosy is still prevalent in many countries… in fact, every 2 minutes, another person is diagnosed with leprosy.

Slowly we’re finding and treating these people. They’re in countries such as India, Nigeria and Nepal. In some countries like Papua New Guinea, where leprosy was “officially” eliminated as a public health problem, leprosy cases are rising again.

With your generosity… YOU can Cure One today

Cure one person with leprosy at a time!Jesus showed love to people with leprosy, curing them and accepting them. Together, we can do the same!

Because Christ loved us firstWhat an amazing love Jesus had for humanity. At The Leprosy Mission, we try to emulate his example in loving those outcast in society.

Jesus loved those who were rejected and despised. He reached out and cured the sick and the desperate—including those with leprosy.

In fact, Jesus Cured, Cared for and Restored many people with leprosy. You can Cure One too!

1. CUREThis means Multi Drug Therapy (MDT) is provided as early as possible. You will provide the medical expertise needed to diagnose and cure people with leprosy. The earlier the better.

Although patients are no longer infectious soon after starting treatment, MDT is not a quick fix. They need multiple doses usually for 12 months—and it’s a challenge to ensure they get every dose.

A person with leprosy may live in a remote area. Or have a disability that makes it hard to travel to a doctor. Or be too poor to travel and seek treatment. Or the stigma of leprosy makes them ashamed to try to get help. All these things may play a part in interrupting a course of MDT.

But when you commit to Cure One, you will ensure a person with leprosy can get the support they need to complete a full course of the cure.

2. CAREOnce cured, people still have to deal with the effects of leprosy.

With self-care training, you show them how to help prevent wounds and stop infection that could lead to amputation or permanent disability.

You will provide physiotherapy so nerve-damaged hands and feet can function again. In the worst cases, your support may mean surgery to restore the use of limbs.

3. RESTORELeprosy-affected people may be cured and cared for… but they still need to be restored to their families and communities.

From Biblical times to today, the stigma of leprosy lingers. You provide emotional support and counselling for people ostracised or abandoned by family and friends.

And you also give them a chance to finish school or learn livelihood skills. It could be raising goats, chickens, opening a shop, or making jewellery or bamboo stools. So they can be self-sufficient and earn their own living.

Walk with Nutan on her healing journey when you Cure One!

Nutan’s already lost a toe to leprosy… the sooner she can get treatment, the less likely she is to suffer more permanent disability.

How you can Cure One person like Nutan

It’s so simple to Cure OneSo many like Nutan are still waiting for supporters like you with the heart and means to Cure One. All it takes is $432 — or $36 a month for 12 months.Consider the other young children like Nutan with leprosy. Mothers and fathers with families to feed. Even people who may have been living with leprosy for decades. You may not be able to cure them all. But you could Cure One.When you commit to Cure One, you’ll provide a Cure for one person’s body, support Care for one person’s ongoing physical needs, and Restore hope to one person’s heart. That’s the power you have when you Cure One.

Thank you for so faithfully supporting people with leprosy.

Today… will you walk with someone like Nutan through the Cure, Care, Restore journey? Will you do as Jesus did in touching the lives of people with leprosy… one person at a time?

For Nutan from India, leprosy has stolen not just years of her life…

But also the livelihood of her family who have sold what little they had in the hope of curing her. (You can read more of Nutan’s story in the letter in the middle of this magazine.)

It’s for the sake of people like Nutan that we’re looking for supporters like you to make a commitment to Cure One.

All it takes is $36 a

month for 12 months

Nutan’s family sold everything they had to help her…nothing worked…

But your commitment today could Cure One like Nutan!

Dear Friend, For Nutan, the first white patch appeared on her leg when she was 10. Then her dad spotted a white patch on her back when she was 11. Then the ulcer on her foot wouldn’t heal. Her family in India sold what little they had to help their beloved daughter. They sold their land. They sold the livestock that was their livelihood. They were left living on the meager wages of Nutan’s father. Less than $2 a day. But it all came to nothing. Nutan’s condition just got worse. Her hand clawed so badly she had trouble grasping simple objects. Like pencils at school or spoons to feed herself. Infection due to leprosy means she has lost her big toe. That makes walking very hard. What hurts Nutan even more is her friends deserting her because of leprosy. How would you feel if your friends suddenly want to have nothing to do with you? Her school ostracised her, believing Nutan is under a spiritual curse. But it wouldn’t matter if the school allowed her to go. Because Nutan’s feet ulcers got so bad she couldn’t walk to class anyway. That’s why I’m asking you to help Cure One.

“Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” – Matt 8:2Please, could you help Cure One like Nutan?

It costs just $432 —or $36 a month for 12 months — to Cure One person like Nutan. When you become a Cure One supporter, you will see Nutan’s journey of healing unfold over the next year. That’s the average amount of time it takes to Cure, Care and Restore a person affected by leprosy. You’ll receive regular updates, showing Nutan’s transformation. From a girl shunned and shamed to a brighter, more confident young woman. As part of your commitment today to Cure One, you will see:1. CURE. What a joy for Nutan and a relief for her family!2. CARE. With both surgical and physical care for Nutan, perhaps one day she can walk more easily again!3. RESTORE. Where Nutan is accepted back into the community that rejected her. Although leprosy is totally curable, it does take time to complete a full course of leprosy medicine and to receive the essential follow up treatment. That’s why your 12-month commitment to Cure One is so vital. But when you make a commitment to Cure One, you’re not just curing a person of leprosy and giving them a new life. I believe you become part of the work Jesus gave us to reach out and touch the lives of people often considered to be outcasts. Jesus showed love to these people. I’m asking you to follow his example.

Please help Cure One like Nutan today - just like Jesus did!

The time when Jesus Cured One…Remember the story in Matthew 8?

“When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, ‘Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.’”Jesus reached out and cured this man. He showed love to this man at a time when people with leprosy were outcasts of society.

Yet our Lord took the time and effort to Cure One.

You can Cure One too!

Today, Laxmi is thankful to be alive at all. Because when the first signs of leprosy appeared…

Nodules on her face, hands and feet. Then burning, tingling and swelling….

Two healers told Laxmi she had just three months to live.

Laxmi was terrified for her son and two daughters. Because her husband had recently gone overseas to work. If Laxmi died, what would happen to her children?

The doctors had told her they could do nothing. But a friend of Laxmi’s did something. What did her friend do?

A NEW FAITH

Laxmi’s friend invited her to church…

… and Laxmi went to church… and found a new faith in Jesus Christ! Today she calls herself a Christian.

Laxmi eventually visited a hospital where the doctors finally and correctly diagnosed her with leprosy.

What a relief to find out that leprosy is curable! And what a joy to find out she was not going to die in three months! Praise God!

As well as Multi-Drug Therapy, Laxmi learned how to care for her leprosy-affected hands and feet to help prevent wounds and ulcers.

And she has learned new business skills so she can earn money for her family.

This is a great blessing as her husband is barely making enough to support himself. He used to send money back home to Laxmi but the Malaysian factory where he works has been struggling. So his wages have dropped.

But Laxmi intends to buy cows, chickens and goats to generate an income to feed her children.

THANKFUL TO PEOPLE LIKE YOU

Laxmi is so grateful. Because she has a new life after leprosy… and a new life in Christ! Because of you.

“Jaimashi (greetings in the name of Jesus) and thank you to you!”

But leprosy has left its mark. Loss of sensation in her hands and feet means she has trouble planting and picking rice in the fields.

And cooking for her family is a constant challenge. Even making a simple cup of a tea is hard!

But you can help people like Laxmi by hosting a Cuppa for a Cure in 2017. Help raise awareness of leprosy and raise some funds. Discover how you can get involved by reading details on the next page!

Laxmi struggles to even make a cup of tea… but you can drink up to help people like her!

Nerve damage from leprosy means Laxmi

finds it hard to cook or even make tea! But you

can make tea to help raise funds to support people like her! Host a

Cuppa for a Cure!

Register your Cuppa for a Cure event by calling 1800 LEPROSY (1800 537 767).

Or you can tick Cuppa for a Cure on the back page and send it back to us. We’ll contact you about your specific requirements and send you a host pack with everything you

need for your tea party. Posters, DVD, coasters, prayer diary and information

about leprosy. You can even purchase your coffee and tea

at the same time. Easy!

Host your Cuppa for a Cure!Do you like a cup of tea?

So do many of the leprosy-affected people we help. Nepal, Thailand, India all have notable tea-drinking cultures.

But often nerve damage from leprosy means people in these countries can’t make or drink tea. (Like Laxmi—see her story on page 10.)

But you can! That’s why we’re asking you to host a Cuppa for a Cure to help those with leprosy. To raise funds, raise awareness and enjoy drinking tea together.

8 WAYS TO CUPPA FOR A CURE TEA PARTY SUCCESS

• Hold a tea tasting! Try teas and treats from different countries. We support Nigeria, Timor Leste, India, Nepal, Thailand and Papua New Guinea.

• Tea party entry fee. Pass around a donation box before each guest can enter.

• A gold coin per cuppa. Ask for a gold coin donation for each cuppa you serve.

• Bring a friend. You were going to do coffee anyway, so why not do tea and support a great cause?

• The Cuppa Tax. In the office or on site, everyone pays $1 or $2 to boil the kettle.

• Gifts of Love. Invite your guests to give a Gift of Love from the catalogue and change lives.

• Buy Fairtrade tea and coffee. Purchase your tea leaves and coffee beans from The Leprosy Mission Australia and help even more people with leprosy.

• Buy beautiful gifts! Encourage guests to select from the latest Gift Catalogue. There’s something for young and old and for every occasion—birthdays, anniversaries, Easter or Christmas.

As part of World Leprosy Day 2017, supporters were asked to set aside a day before Easter to pray for the ministry—and to host a Cuppa for a Cure.

But you can host a Cuppa for a Cure at any time during the year.

Hold it as part of a special event or celebration, a gathering with your friends at home, or at church or in your small group.

McFadden Uniting Church Retirement Village held a Cuppa for a Cure afternoon tea and raised over $100. A special thank you to Norma Conn, in her 90s, for organising this event. You’re never too old (or too young) to make a difference. So register your Cuppa for a Cure event today.

Now successfully treated, she works in her father’s tea shop to support her children. Another life restored because of people like you.

2017 Trek to Nepal with The Leprosy Mission

The Nepal earthquake destroyed part of

Thali Maya’s house. Your support means

she’s had medical care for leprosy and

will have her family’s house rebuilt.

“This was the most amazing trek I’ve ever done! I loved the three-fold idea of visiting Nepal, seeing The Leprosy Mission staff and volunteers, visiting a village self-help group—and fundraising for the work of The Leprosy Mission. We saw the spectacular Annapurna mountains sunrise, stayed in mountain villages, chatted with locals and saw ladies use large weaving looms.” – Heather Newton, former trekker and Ambassador for The Leprosy Mission Australia.

“Jesus calls us to service…”Is God calling you to volunteer with The Leprosy Mission?Do you have some time to give to help people affected by leprosy? Then please pray about joining volunteers like Heather Newton!A long-time supporter, Heather is now an Ambassador for The Leprosy Mission, and serves on both the National Council and a State Committee. She also completed the Trek to Nepal (pictured on page 12).Here Heather shares with you:

What inspires you to work for The Leprosy Mission? The logo says it all—Jesus bending and touching another person. I remember visiting an outpatient department and bending to hold hands with a lady with leprosy. Jesus calls us to service as he did.

What do you do in your roles?Inform supporters of The Leprosy Mission’s work, fundraise and arrange events with national and international speakers to speak about the needs of people with leprosy.

What would you say to encourage others to volunteer? There are many ways to assist people with leprosy and their families to move out of disability and poverty! Whatever time you can give is valuable.

You could leave a legacy like Joan Wade! She’s faithfully supported The Leprosy Mission for almost 20 years. Now Marjorie Joan Wade continues to reach out to those with leprosy through a Gift in her Will. Her friends remember her warm heart and how she worked tirelessly as an overseas missionary. She was also a dedicated prayer warrior, attending the monthly prayer meeting at Village Baxter (where she was a resident) and the meetings of the Mornington Peninsula’s Leprosy Mission Support Group.

Her big smile and sense of humour were evident even in the last days of her life.

It was fitting that one of her favourite songs The King of Love My Shepherd Is was sung at her funeral. It reflected Joan’s love for God and her passion for looking out for vulnerable people affected by leprosy.

It was this passion that made her leave a Gift in her Will to The Leprosy Mission. If you want to reach out and touch the lives of leprosy-affected people, then a bequest like Joan’s is the gift that keeps on giving well into the future!

You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a Gift in your Will. You only need a heart for those with leprosy. Every legacy helps, whether large or small.

Why do new shoes mean so much to a 75-year-old man? Because they protect his feet from terrible ulcers!

What an amazing difference you can make with a simple pair of protective shoes. Thank you to all who contributed $15 or more to the appeal last Christmas. Together, you’ve reached the target to “Save 10,000 Soles”. By providing pairs of shoes you’ve helped prevent wounds and ulcers on nerve-damaged feet.

One pair of shoes went to 75-year-old Lot in Timor Leste. Lot’s right foot went numb and started to develop wounds that would not heal.

His son was worried and called in a Leprosy Mission field worker. And yes, Lot had leprosy. He began Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) and self-care training to prevent further injury to his foot.

And Lot received new, shoes—thanks to your generosity!

Without shoes, people like Lot may be cured of leprosy but still suffer loss of sensation in their feet. This means they can’t feel pain if they

step on a stick, stone or other sharp object. This can result in festering, pus-filled ulcers—or even amputation.

But with shoes, they can keep their feet protected as they walk around the home, work in the fields, tend fires—or go to church. Lot loves attending his local church in his village.

“Before I was diagnosed with leprosy I was very confused. I didn’t know why I had a wound on my foot that didn’t feel painful. I tried traditional medicine but it didn’t help. Thank you! I feel so much better after taking MDT.”

Thanks to you, shoes do make a difference!
