Sanctity and Significance of Ratha Yatra Ju , 20
The festival is also known as Gundicha Yatra, and by a variety of other names. For the devoted and believers, it is considered the most auspicious occasion. Yatra is an essential part of the ritual of the Hindu system of worship. Yatra literally means travel or journey. Normally, it is the representative deities of temples more popularly known as Chalanti Pratima or Bije Pratima in Puri, Orissa, who partake in the annual Rath Yatra. It is rarely that the presiding deities come out of the sanctum for such ritual journeys. The Yatra for the Ritual Journey takes two forms – one involving the short circumbulation around the temple and other involving a longer journey from the temple to some other destination, such as the Gundicha temple in Puri. The yatra is an important part of festivities and ceremonies of each temple and is considered as a special and sacred occasion.
Rath Yatra being unique among all Yatras is the grandest festival of the supreme divinity that has manifested himself in the Kali Yuga to emancipate humanity and to relieve them from their sufferings. Lord Jagannath is identified with Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. In his original manifestation as Nilamadhaba, he was worshipped in a sacred temple under a banyan tree. The branches of the tree had spread for several miles and anyone entering this area was instantly emancipated and was relieved of the travails of the birth and re-birth. In fact, the influence of Yama, the God of Death, is supposed to have been curtailed in the sacred city of Puri – Srikhetra on account of the presence of Lord Jagannatha and therefore it is also called the Yamanika Tirtha.
A glimpse of Lord Jagannath on the chariot is considered to be very auspicious and saints, poets and scriptures have repeatedly glorified the sanctity of this special festival. The sanctity of the festival is such that even a touch of the chariot or even the ropes with which these are pulled is considered enough to confer the results of several pious deeds or penance for ages. In fact, there is a famous Oriya song which says that on this occasion, the chariot, the wheels, the grand avenue all become one with Lord Jagannath himself.
In Tampa Bay this festival has been organized and celebrated annually as the ‘Festival of Chariot’ since 2006 by the Tampa Bay Rath Yatra (T.R.Y.) Association, with the support of all the Jagannath devotees living in the Tampa Bay area. This year the Rath Yatra has been scheduled to be celebrated on Ju ,201 at the ! "!, at 55# Lynn Road, Tampa, Florida 33624. Tampa Bay Rath Yatra (TBRY) Association is celebrating its 10th year anniversary. The Association obtained its 503(c) status last year from the IRS. The goal of TBRY has been to establish a permanent seat at one of the local temples for Lord Jagannath such that our devotees can have the Lord’s darshan every day and not wait for the once a year event during the Rath Yatra festival. With generous financial support from our devotees the plan to establish Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in Tampa at the newly constructed Sanatan Mandir has materialized and murti stapanna has been scheduled to take place during spring of 2016.
To continue the tradition of Jagannath Culture and Rath Yatra in Tampa Bay, TBRYA has established a Board of Trustees (BoT) based on the financial support (contribution of $1000 or more in a year) and the service dedication of the devotees. This designation is valid for two years.

JAGANNATH “NAVAKALEBAR” FESTIVAL 2015
The ceremony “Navakalebar” is the periodical removal of the wooden images of the deities in the Jagannath temple in Puri, India. It is indeed a unique ceremony in many respects in the Hindu religious worship. It is an unavoidable consequence of wooden images of deities which are prone to decay and therefore requires periodical renewal. The ceremony falls after a gap of 12 or 19 years depending upon occurrence of second “Aasadha” month in the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. The last “Navakalebar” was performed in 1996.
The ancient tradition says that at the end of “Dwapara Yuga”, Lord Krishna left his body after being shot by tribal chief “Jara Sabar”. Lord Krishna’s body which was immersed in the Arabian Sea in the west coast of India came floating to the East Coast Bay of Bengal, at Puri, in the form of “Daru” (wooden form). The then King Indraduymna received an order from the Lord in a dream to be installed in Puri. King Indraduymna carried out the order and installed the Lord at Puri on a hill called “Neelasaila”. Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out of the temple once a year for public view for the benefit of “Darashan” by all including non-Hindus. They are drawn in three separate chariots. The concept of chariot is as old as “Rig-Veda”. It is associated with the chariot of Sun God in Konarka, India. The car festival has been going on since that time, with some break during the Muslim invasion of Puri.
Sweeping of the chariot by the King of Puri, before the Rath Yatra is another unique feature which indicates that nobody is greater than Him. The great Gajapati Maharaja playing the role of a sweeper, the lowest in the Hindu caste order exhibits the height of religious humanity and conforms to the implications of the word Jagannath the only Lord of the Universe. Of course taking the deities in ceremonial cars is observed in some other major Hindu shrines in India, but the manner of observance of nine days car festival in Puri is definitely distinct and most uncommon. Lord Jagannath is more known to the outside world through His famous car festival.
The most peculiar uniqueness of Jagannath lies in His “Mahaprasad” or the cooked Holy foods offered to Him. In a caste-ridden Hindu society the Brahmins and Priests are not allowed to take cooked food from others. But paradoxically the “Mahaprasad” of the Lord is considered so sacred that even a staunch orthodox Brahmin accepts it from the hands of a person belonging to the lowest in the caste order. While the foods offered to all other Hindu deities are called “Prasad”, the same offered to Lord Jagannath is known as “Mahaprasad” since it undergoes six types of purification, before it reaches the common devotees. The peculiar stove “Chula” in the Kitchen of the Lord contains six openings symbolizing “Sathkona Yantra”, and nine earthen pots are placed at a time over such a stove representing “Navachakra Yantra”. Such elaborate procedures are nowhere followed for consecration of food offerings to the deities in Hindu temples. Even portions of the earthen containers of “Mahaprasad” are taken to the remotest corners of India by Hindu pilgrims with the belief that very presence of the same in the house dispels all evil spirits.
“Darubrahma” is the other name of Lord Jagannath. Stone and metal idols are usually being the objects of worship in Hindu religious system. Jagannath is carved out of Neem wood which is bitter in
taste that is not susceptible to termites. Still the statues being of wood cannot sustain themselves for a long time. Their periodical renovation thus becomes inevitable, which is called “Navakalebara” meaning new body. This “Navakalebara” ritual or the total transformation of deities into a new frame is nowhere observed other than in Jagannath temple Puri.
Rituals performed during “Navakalebar”: There are four distinct stages of making of new images; (a) Search for “Daru”, (b) Carving out the deities, (c) Consecration of the deities, and (d) Transfer of life substance or “Brahma” in to the deities. The great march in search of “Daru” (divine wood) for carving out the images of the Lord commences more than two months before the car festival. The search party, usually consist of “Daitas” who claim to be descendants of Sabar Biswabasu, the Pati Mahaputra the descendants of children out of the marriage of tribal girl “Lalita” and the Brahmin Minister “Vidyapati”.
The selection of “Daru” (divine wood) is only from the trees which have signs of Conch, Wheel, Lotus and Gada (symbol of the Lord). There should be no nest of any bird and there should be a live snake and a white ant mound at the base.
Following the carving of the deities, the new images are brought near the old images for the transference of “Brahma” or the “Life Substance”. The transference is entrusted to a chosen “Daita” who is blind folded with gloves in his hands. He can neither see nor touch during the transference of “Brahma”. The event is scheduled during the dead of night. Following transference of the “Brahma”, the old images are buried in “Koilibaikuntha” inside the temple premises, and the new images are installed on the “Ratna Bedi” within the main temple. So far as the “Brahma” or the “Life Substance” is concerned, some scholars say that it is part of the Lord Krishna’s body, and some say it contains Lord Buddha’s Tooth. Lord Buddha was declared as one of the incarnation of Lord Vishnu by Sanskrit poet “Jaydev” in the 12th century. Jaydev used to sing “Geeta Govinda” before Lord Jagannath retired to bed inside the temple.
