Course Contents

The course covers everything from the history of printmaking, to generating ideas, to an explaination of the main printmaking methods that you can employ in a near limitless number of ways to create exciting prints.

Printmaking techniques that you will learn and explore through the course include:

Monoprinting - The course will cover 4 different ways of exploring this simple painterly technique of printmaking to create unique one-off printmaking art prints.

Collograph - This printmaking technique uses collage and found objects to create very textural and free prints.

Linocut - Explore relief printing methods using linoleum as the block.

Woodcut - Learn relief printing techniques using wood as the block.

Advanced and Experimental Relief Printing - Includes using the reduction technique and printing more than one colour using the ‘key block’ system. We also explore developing relief printing further including different materials for the block, stencils and incorporating monoprint.

Wood Engraving - Wood engraving is our new module for 2015. Here we show you how to carry out wood engraving into small blocks of endgrain wood (e.g. boxwood).

Drypoint - A simple intaglio form of printing that can be printed by hand. This is a very linear printmaking method which the course explores using simple perspex sheets that we draw into.

Simple screenprinting - The course explores 3 different simple methods to create stencils for use with screenprinting, including found objects, paper stencils and hand-painted stencils. We show you how to use screen printing to achieve exciting effects.

Support and Assessments

The distance learning Introduction to Printmaking course allows you to learn the art of printmaking in a clear, logical manner and at a pace that suits you. The 13 core modules can all be studied at home and will steadily progress both your printmaking knowledge and practical skills. You can complete the modules in any order that you want but for the best posisble progression we recommend that you study them from 1 to 13.

Distance Learning - The Flexible Study Method

Once enrolled, you will be assigned a personal tutor to answer any questions that you may have via email, Facebook or our online learning portal. We will help you get the most from your printmaking studies and to achieve the results that you want.

Tuition and Support for your Printmaking

At the end of each module there are some projects to help consolidate your learning. On top of this we have set five assignments that can be submitted for assessment and feedback, to help you progress and develop your printmaking. For students who complete the assignments to the required standard, a ‘Certificate of Achievement’ will be issued.

Course Projects, Assessments and Certificate of Achievement

Though you can study at entirely your own pace, typically students are able to complete the printmaking course in 6-9 months by studying 6-8 hours per week. There is no time limit in which you are required to complete the distance learning printmaking course but please note that tutor support and access to the online learning portal finishes after 12 months. After that date a renewal fee will need to be paid to remain on the online portal and renew your tutor support. (N.B Payment can be made annually or monthly).

Time Guide

Since the printmaking techniques that we teach do not require a printing press, there is no need to hire studio space or spend additional money on expensive printmaking tools. We will provide you with recommended materials and also a handy reading list to accompany the course!

Excellent Value for a Comprehensive Course

For 2015 we have upgraded our course to include access to an online learning platform. Through this portal you will gain access to your course materials, video tutiroals and tutor support. Any time we provide additional content, you will have immediate access!

What You Receive...When you enrol on the course, you will receive login details for our online portal and access to the Facebook support group (an invitation via email). Within the online portal you can instantly access the course modules and work through at your own pace.

At the heart of our Printmaking Distance Learning Course are the 13 core modules. These modules cover all of the topics mentioned on page 3 and are all delivered to you via our online learning platform (no waiting for a hard-copy manual to be delivered!).

Each module comprises demonstration/information videos, plus the original colour PDF manual. The PDFs have colour photos throughout, space for your notes, plenty of TIPS from the author and step-by-step guides to the techniques. The videos (all between 2-20 minutes in length) contain practical demonstrations of the techniques taught, as well as a few information videos and tips. These videos are all presented by tutor and printmaker Susan Yeates and really help to bring to life many of the practical techniques.

We recommend that you use both elements (the course manual and online vidoes) to get the full benefit of the course.

You will also find a comprehensive reading list, projects ‘to do’ at the end of each module and your final assignments to send off for marking.

Upon enrolment you will be sent access to a dedicated Facebook support group, available for distance learning course students only. This group will be monitored by Magenta Sky tutors and is a great place to share images of your work, ask questions and network with fellow students. We find that support groups are a great way to stay motivated and enjoy the course fully along with other keen enthisuasts! (NB. You will need to have a personal Facebook account to take advantage of this feature).

These demonstration video helps to bring to life the printing techniques taught as part of the course. Learn with Susan as she takes you through step-by-step demonstrations of the techniques taught in the course. Full of useful tips and clear instructions these videos are a welcome addition to the distance learning course and you can watch them as many times as you want!

40+ page e-book that explores how printmaking can be turned from an enjoyable and relaxing hobby into a lucrative business, selling prints and printed products whether on the internet or via traditional means. This e-book is the perfect accompaniment to the ‘Introduction to Printmaking’ Distance Learning Course. It will help to think of creative ways of using your prints for gifts, cards or selling directly.

Accompanying the course is one of the most comprehensive reading lists on printmaking around! We certainly don’t recommend that you buy them all but we point you in the right direction of what great books are out there to develop your learning further.
