5. Additional information on Discipline Areas within the BA
Discipline Areas Subjects in the following discipline areas may be taken as a Major (8 units), a Minor (4 units) or as elective subjects. Units for each area are identified in “Units Offered in 2013”.
Business Studies The Business Studies major aims to develop your understanding of the modern business environment and an appreciation of the ethical, social and economic contexts that help guide decision-making in business.
Business Studies consists of a selection of units for BA students from the total offering of Business units. It is not the equivalent of a business qualification. Drama The major sequence in Drama offers a broad range of studies. Theoretical units include Comedy, Modern Drama and Shakespeare. Practical units include playwriting, production and performance.
History Explore the fascinating people, places and events in Australian, European, Asian, American and comparative histories. Studies in this area build knowledge about social, political and cultural events that shaped the world. History lecturers encourage innovation and creativity to nurture students’ further engagement with studies of the past and to prepare them for a variety of careers such as teaching, museum curatorship, archivists and further postgraduate research. Literature Explore a wide range of poetry, prose, fiction and drama written in English and develop creative and critical skills while undertaking various ranges of themed and period-based studies. The Literature sequence provides students with a sound working knowledge of literary texts from various genres and current critical approaches. Students may choose to focus on the literature from a particular period or place or which deals with a special theme. Mathematics Recognise the role occupied by technology in the learning and conduct of mathematics. Units at the introductory level require Year 12 Mathematics (2 Units or Level 3 & 4) as a prerequisite. The units in the major sequence in Mathematics provide an in-depth study appropriate for those intending to be secondary teachers of mathematics, or for those graduates who seek a career in another field which draws upon mathematical thought. Media Develop the theoretical knowledge and technical skills in media production. Units include studies of media theory, analysis and ethics. Studio production units include radio and television production of dramatic and documentary material. The Media sequence introduces students to processes and products in the electronic and print media and to the theories underpinning their roles in society. Some units develop

Information last updated on 18 April 2013 Page 34
analytical skills and lead to broadcasting policy analysis. Units combine theory and practice in a variety of production processes and media text analysis. Music The music major offers students the chance to explore contemporary and popular music composition, music technology and production, as well as Australian and European music history. Students in the music sequence have access to a state-of-the-art music recording and production studio and the opportunity to train with composers and musicologists. The composition units require basic music reading skills; however, students without this background can take an introductory unit. Philosophy Aristotle (384-322 B.C.) says "it is through wondering about truth, goodness etc. that people begin to philosophise"; so, to study Philosophy is to raise such questions deliberately, and to endeavour to answer them.
Politics
The major in politics develops a critical understanding of people and politics from the powerful to the powerless. Examine the theories, institutional arrangements, issues and cultural factors that affect decision-making processes and the people and groups who fight for change. Politics subjects develop analytical and communication skills that are valuable in the workplace. All students in this degree will take POLS309 World Politics and Justice in 4th year.
Psychology (non-APAC accredited) The 8 unit major will not allow students to proceed to become accredited psychologists. Students seeking accreditation will have to transfer into a degree with an accreditation pathway. Such students should consult the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) or the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology). The 8 unit major in Psychology is a popular choice for students interested in theories of psychology or who wish to train to be a psychology teacher in secondary schools. Sociology Develop your sociological imagination – discover new ways to understand and investigate human social relationships and your place within them – friendships, families, networks, communities, nations and the globalising world. Study of Religions Students may undertake a minor or major in units about the diversity of religious experience and expression in different belief systems and interfaith relations and dialogue. The offering of the sequence distinctively tailors ACU programs to meet the needs of future teachers seeking employment in Catholic and Christian schools. 'Study of Religions' assists students to engage with the major religious traditions of our world and appreciate their impact on Australian society. Over the course of the degree, students wishing to undertake a minor in the Study of Religions must successfully complete four units from the sequence list (http://www.acu.edu.au/428732) with at least two units at the advanced level (200 or 300 level).
Course Enrolment Guide – Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Global Studies – Students commencing in 2013_Melbourne 2013
Information last updated on 18 April 2013 Page 35
Students wishing to undertake a major in the Study of Religions may undertake further units from the sequence list ( http://www.acu.edu.au/428732) as well as units listed in the Theological Studies Major (at least 5 units of the major should be at an advanced level (200 or 300 level.) Theological Studies Theology seeks a critical understanding of Christian beliefs and values, and addresses questions posed by the contemporary world. At ACU, theology shares with philosophy and the social sciences a common vision and a collaborative concern for truth, justice, ethical values and the dignity of the human person. Theology is an integral part of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Please note: Students wishing to major in Theological Studies should enrol in THBS100 and THCT100 which are the prerequisites for most other Theological Studies units. Students who may wish to teach RE in Catholic schools later should also include THCT202 in their major. Visual Arts and Design Combine practical experiences in studio production and theoretical studies in art and design history and theory. Visual Arts and Design caters for a diversity of interests among students and combines practical experiences in studio production and theoretical studies in art and design history and theory. Students undertaking a major or minor need to ensure they have no more than two units coded at 100 level, with the remaining units being chosen from those coded at 200 level.
Minors and Elective Units can be chosen from the following discipline areas: Communication This sequence combines theoretical studies and their practical applications. Students will examine theories of communication and signification within cultures and organisations and acquire skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Family Studies Please note the Family Studies minor is being discontinued. Students may not begin a Family Studies Minor in 2013. Languages (Italian, Chinese, Japanese) Australian Catholic University (ACU) in partnership with Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) will allow ACU Faculty of Arts and Sciences students to enrol in SUT language courses.
Bachelor of Global Studies/Bachelor of Arts students are eligible to study Italian, Japanese or Chinese units at SUT’s Hawthorn campus. Students must consult their Course Coordinator or course administrator well ahead of the start of semester in order to complete the forms required for cross-institutional study.
Please note: Introduction to Chinese Language is a Summer Term unit only. Students who wish to take this unit, need to complete a cross-institutional form (AX Form), have it signed by their course coordinator and lodge it at the Student Centre.

Information last updated on 18 April 2013 Page 36
Science Studies (electives only) Please note the Science Studies minor is being discontinued. Students may not begin a Science Studies Minor in 2013. Youth Work A minor in this sequence provides BA students with theoretical insights into work with young people. Youth Work units are designed to enhance students’ understanding of the needs, problems and aspirations of young people in a variety of public and community based settings, such as churches, schools, health services, community agencies or charities. Please note that the Minor in Youth Work does not constitute a professional qualification in Youth Work.
Once you have decided your major, please complete a Change of Major Form on the ACU website (http://www.acu.edu.au/student_resources/forms/enrolment_forms/cm_-_change_of_major/) For information on Unit Descriptions, please refer to the ACU Handbook on the ACU website (http://www.acu.edu.au/142401).
