    CORE COURSES

    EDP 6010 Advanced Educational Psychology (3 credit hours)

    This course surveys the Islamic approaches to the teaching and practice ofeducational psychology. Western and Islamic approaches to educational

    psychology are compared. An in-depth analysis of modern learning theories as

    they relate to the school and everyday life is also investigated.

    EDP 6150 Research Methodology (3 credit hours)

    This course aims to develop in the student the method of thinking throughapplication of scientific method. It aims to enable students to understand and be

    able to apply basic research methodology and scientific method in practical

    research relevant to the field of education. Through the course the students areexpected to learn the principles of research methodology and to plan and design a

    research project relevant to their specific area of specialization.

    EDP 6110 Educational Measurement and Statistics (3 credit hours)

    The focus of this course is on measurement and statistical techniques available foranalyzing and interpreting data. Evaluation of the use of statistics (i.e. its use and

    limitations) in social science research is reviewed.

    EDF 6050 Advanced History and Philosophy of Islamic (3 credit hours)

    Education

    An overview of the history and philosophy of Islamic education is the thrust of this course. Major

    educational figures, theories, institutions, and developments from early Muslim history throughmodern times are examined and interpreted in their cultural contexts. The distinct nature of

    philosophic inquiry functioning within a socio-cultural setting in the construction of Islamic

    educational theory is emphasized.

    EDU 6998 Thesis Related to the Field of Specialization (6 credit hours)

    EDU 6997 Directed Research Practicum (3 credit hours)

    (For Non-Thesis Option)

    This course is offered to the Master of Education students who will be opting for

    the non-thesis option only. It will focus on current issues of importance to the

    education profession. Students will be guided in selecting a feasible researchtopic and writing a quality research paper employing all the basic research skills

    they have acquired in the course on research methodology. The research paper

    will be a description, an analysis, an evaluation and synthesis of the selectedtopic. The research paper will be about 6000 words in length or between 25 to 30

    pages.

    EDU 6995 Comprehensive Examination (No credit hours)

    (For Non-Thesis Option)

    Philosophically, the comprehensive examination is theoretically based and willcover the general and broad area of his specialization. It comprises two papers,

    each three hours in duration, which will cover some aspects of the specialized and

    core courses. The examinations will be set and evaluated by two faculty members

    in the area of specialization. An authoritative figure would be appointed as anadditional examiner if there were a discrepancy between the two examiners. To

    establish the reliability of the examination an evaluation or marking scheme will

    be developed. The examination will be offered only in the regular semester. Acandidate will be allowed to repeat once if he or she fails in the first attempt.

    TEACHING OF ARABIC TO NON ARABIC SPEAKERS

    EDL 6530 Issues in Arabic Grammar (3 credit hours)

    This course introduces the proper use of Arabic grammar for students of ASL

    (Arabic as a second language). An overview of the different Arabicgrammarian schools of thought is also covered in this course.

    EDL 6210 Issues in Arabic Teaching Methodology (3 credit hours)

    A detailed account of major twentieth century trends in Arabic language Teaching

    is introduced in this course. An examination of historical, political, social, and

    literary factors influencing trends in Arabic language teaching methodology will

    be covered, together with implications on the formulation of theories in Arabic

    language learning and teaching.

    EDL 6510 Arabic Literature and Text Analysis (3 credit hours)

    This course focuses on critical examination of selected Arabic literature.Discussion on the development of Arabic literature from pre-Islamic era to

    modern times will also be covered.

    EDL 6520 An Introduction to Ilm al-Lughah (3 credit hours)

    Introduction to the historical development of the field of linguistics, with anemphasis on the Arabic language is the core of this course. The impact of Arabic

    on past and modern civilizations will also be investigated.

    EDL 6540 Rhetoric and Criticism (3 credit hours)

    A survey on principles and rules of Arabic rhetoric and the concept of criticism in

    Arabic literature will be covered in this course. An examination of major

    historical trends in Arabic rhetoric and criticism, and their application in

    evaluating Arabic literature will also be reviewed.

    EDL 6550 Psycholinguistics (3 credit hours)

    Critical evaluation of recent research and theory on the psychological processes

    underlying acquisition and development of language are covered by this course.

    Emphasis on the processes and strategies of Arabic acquisition and learning as a

    second language are also reviewed.

    EDL 6650 Malay-Islamic Literature (3 credit hours)

    This course introduces the origin, historical development, and current usages of

    Islamic literature in the Malay Archipelago. The mutual impact of Malay

    literature and the coming of Islam to the Malay Archipelago, its implications onthe role of language in the Islamization process will be studied.

    EDL 6610 Islamic Culture and Civilization (3 credit hours)

    Underlying factors affecting the formation of Islamic culture and civilizationthroughout history will be discussed. Comparison and contrast of Islamic cultural

    and civilization formation and growth with those in other societies will be

    investigated together with enduring aspects of Islamic culture and civilization.

    EDL 6320 Instructional Materials in the Teaching of Arabic (3 credit hours)

    Students will be introduced to the systematic design and development of

    instructional materials for teaching Arabic in schools. Skill development in the

    EDL 6350 Textbook Development in the Teaching of Arabic (3 credit hours)

    The focus of this course will be the principles in the systematic design anddevelopment of textbooks and supporting teacher guides for teaching Arabic in

    schools. Skill development in the selection, utilization, and evaluation of available

    textbook materials for teaching Arabic will be reviewed.

    EDL 6560 Contrastive and Error Analysis (3 credit hours)

    Comparison and contrast of relevant aspects of Arabic and other selected

    languages will be investigated. Analysis of language learning problems via error

    analysis faced by Malay studies, in particular, will be done.

    This course is a study of Islamic education curriculum, its relationship to societyand to present practices in schools. An analysis and interpretation of factors that

    shape the development of Islamic education curricula from early Muslim history

    to the present, focusing on the role of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The design andimplementation of Islamic education curriculum in past and contemporary

    multifaith societies will also be reviewed.

    This course will review the role of spoken communication, especially Arabic and

    Arabic-based languages, in the origin, growth, and maintenance of Islamic

    education throughout Muslim history, and its implications on the importance ofthe language curriculum in Islamic educational planning and implementation.

    EDC 6745 Mass Media in Islamic Education (3 credit hours)

    The focus of this course is how mass media shapes an individual's creation of

    social reality with regard to the dissemination of Islamic values and knowledge.

    It will also investigate the development, structure, and functions of mass mediaand media systems as they affect the nature, form, and progress of Islamic

    education.

    EDC 6760 The Non-Formal Aspects in Islamic Education (3 credit hours)

    Two components of this course are: -

    This course investigates the nature and function of programmes for developing

    The course reviews the interrelationships of various components of a curriculumdesign as a basis for decision-making in constructing and improving instructional

    EDA 6475 Computer in Administration (3 credit hours)

    The thrust of this course is an examination of various computer-based

    technologies used in school administration. In addition theories and modelsrelating to computer-assisted instruction, computer-based training, computer

    literacy, and other uses of computers as instructional and administrative media,

    will also be investigated.

    EDA 6747 Management and Administration in Secondary Schools (3 credit hours)

    Concepts, principles, and procedures for planning, managing, and interpreting the

    learning environment for secondary school children, will be the main thrust of thiscourse. Identification and analysis of problems and issues in secondary education

    administration will be discussed.

    EDA 6755 Management and Administration in Tertiary Institutions (3 credit hours)

    This course reviews the development of tertiary education in Malaysia and how

    the universities are managed. Topics for discussion include the role of university

    administrators, the faculty, support staff, curriculum development, planning,

    programming and budgeting and student affairs. Special issues of universityadministration such as evaluation of academic staff, problems concerning

    students, Higher Education Acts and others will be highlighted together with an

    This course analysis the constructs, principles, and techniques of major

    EDG 6495 Mental Health (3 credit hours)

    This course overviews and analyzes of mental health concepts, research and the

    dynamics of human behavior. An examination of human mental health will begiven to the Western and Islamic Psychological paradigms. In addition, early

    Muslim scholars approach to mental health will also be discussed.

    EDG 6440 Techniques in Counseling (3 credit hours)

    This course covers the following components:

    a. Counseling skill development drawing from various counselingtheories.

    b. Premises on which western and Islamic approaches to counseling arebased, examined and compared; and

    c. Implications on the model counsellor in Islam.EDG 6275 Counseling Practicum (3 credit hours)

    The practice of supervised counseling in laboratory and field settings is the

    strength of this course. The use of cases, tapes, role-playing and analysis of

    counseling processes and counselor responses will be encouraged/required.Ethics in counseling in Islam will be observed.

    Theory of Careers and counseling techniques for those intending to be counselors

    EDG 6445 Counseling From An Islamic Perspective (3 credit hours)

    This course is meant to expose students to the various aspects of counseling from

    the Islamic perspective, according to the following outlines: to help students to

    understand the concepts of Guidance and Counseling, to discuss in detail theconcept and principles of Islam as a basic to Islamic Counseling; to discusshuman nature in the Holy Quran and theHadith, to evaluate the views of human

    This course is an analysis of recent literature in the field of human developmentwith special emphasis on early experiences at home and at school, peer

    relationships, socio- cultural influences, and determinants of self-concepts.

    EDP 6605 Child Psychology (3 credit hours)

    This course studies various theories and research findings in child psychology,

    which essentially reviews critically child development from all aspects namely the

    physical, intellectual, spiritual, moral, emotional and social aspects. The critical

    review emphasizes the understanding of child development from the Islamicperspective as against secular-based ones.

    EDP 6610 Theories of Personality (3 credit hours)

    The biological, psychological and spiritual foundations of personality will bestudied in this course. Emphasis will be placed on the integrative aspects of

    personality.

    EDP 6615 School Testing Programme (3 credit hours)

    This course is an analytical study of school testing programmes, with reference to

    the purpose, philosophy, and plan of testing that will relate testing to the totalprogrammes of instruction, guidance and administrative education in schools and

    school systems.

    This course is concerned with observation and measurement of behavior in

    educational groups, such as classroom, playground, therapy groups,

    administrative and staff groups. An introduction to group dynamics will also beemphasized.

    EDP 6625 Psychology of Classroom Learning (3 credit hours)

    This course involves the analytical study of learning of activities in the classroom,

    with reference to the learning of school subjects. The focus is on the learning

    process. Theories and principles of learning related to classroom situations willalso be discussed.

    EDP 6285 Personality Disorders (3 credit hours)

    This course is a systematic study of the theoretical contributions of majorpsychologists to a basic understanding of the dynamics of human personality. It

    also discuses and critically examines personality theories from an Islamic

    perspective, with emphasis on the spiritual dimension in the formation of human

    personality, and the Islamic concept ofinsan kamil (the perfect human being).

    EDP 6332 Social Psychology in Education (3 credit hours)

    This course will examine the social-psychological millieux of education. Thecourse focuses on the underpinning issues of social psychology and its importance

    to education. Students will be encouraged to analyze and examine the issues in

    the context of educational setting and from the ummatic perspective.

    EDC 6705 Models of Teaching (3 credit hours)

    This course is a study of instruction. Although considerable focus will be on themodels presented in the text book, the intent is for the student to explore the area

    of instruction, including research base, learning styles, and communication.

    EDC 6710 Issues in Curriculum and Instruction (3 credit hours)

    The purpose of this course is to engage students in the exploration and discussionof critical issues in education, which directly affect their work as educators.

    EDC 6715 The Teaching of Thinking (3 credit hours)

    The course provides an instructional framework for teaching specific thinking

    skills and for developing and nurturing the teaching of skillful and reflectivethinking in all content areas

    (k - 12).

    EDC 6720 Educational Technology (3 credit hours)

    This is an elective course for the M. Ed Programme, which cuts across specificsubject specialization and aims to introduce participants to current ideas and

    concepts related to the development of educational technology, particularly in its

    applications to teaching and learning. The course attempts to strike a balancebetween theory and practical / hands-on activities and aims at increasing

    participants awareness of the need for the applications of educational technology

    in todays educational system.

    SOCIAL FOUNDATIONS OF EDUCATION

    EDF 6805 History of Muslim Education (3 credit hours)

    This is a descriptive and analytical study of the history of Muslim education as it

    developed with the rise of Islam, in the time of the Prophet, the Khulafa al-

    Rashidun and the Umayyad Caliphate in the 7th and 8th centuries and its

    crystallization and blooming during the Abbasid Caliphate in the 9th and 10th

    centuries as an advanced and progressive system of education. It also looks into

    the theoretical and philosophical framework that informed it and the curricularand pedagogical concepts and practices that were employed in Muslim education.

    The course also examines the different stages of Muslim education, the ancillary

    systems, waqfsystem, the role and status of Muslim teachers. It then reviews thecauses of stagnation that later set in the Muslim education and the processes of

    modernization that started with the changes that were introduced during the

    colonial period. Finally, the course surveys the post-colonial and contemporaryproblems of Muslim education as well as the emergent movements and ideologies

    designed to eradicate decline in and revitalize Muslim education in the present

    times and for the future.

    EDF 6801 Qualitative Research Methods (3 credit hours)

    This course is a general introduction to the philosophy and methods of qualitative

    research. It is an introduction to philosophical, historical, and other

    methodologies as aspects of qualitative educational research. The aim of thecourse is to develop an understanding of the idea of qualitative research as a

    whole and the various ways in which such research is done. However, it is

    necessary also to work through the special methods e.g. philosophical,anthropological, sociological, historical, and so on, those are taken to be

    qualitative. There will be a consideration of these special methods and

    viewpoints.There will also be an examination of theses, to determine their qualitativecharacteristics and how (and why) they are done well or not so well. An

    operating assumption of the course is that students in the class are, or will be

    writing a thesis or dissertation using the qualitative method of research.

    This course analyzes Education not only as the transmission of knowledge from

    one generation to the next, but rather a process by which the present generationcritically appropriates knowledge created by the previous one, in order to

    understand the present better and if need be to change it. To learn, therefore, is to

    understand critically. Where the Quran underscores the importance of personal

    effort in understanding the signs (ayah) of Allah for the faithful, it also givespreference to critical thinking over passive acceptance (taqleed) of the past.

    Understanding the signs of Allah, however, cannot be a one time event but an

    ongoing historical process. It has to be a process by which the previousunderstanding of the signs of Allah is appropriated critically. That is how it

    should be if knowledge is to grow.

    This course is designed to re-introduce into Islamic education a forgotten element

    of Islamic tradition, i.e. critical thinking. It will do this by way of discussing thevarious theories of critique in vogue at present in the West.

    EDF 6010 Philosophy in Education for Thinking (3 credit hours)

    This course introduces students to the central issues of philosophy and the role ofphilosophy in education for thinking, in particular, the contribution of logic, ethics

    and aesthetics. Effort will also be made to deal with particular subject areas at

    particular educational levels to illustrate how philosophy can be relevant there.Some reflections will also be made on the significance of philosophy for

    curriculum development, teacher preparation and teaching for thinking

    classroom.

    EDF 6825 Educational Classics (3 credit hours)

    This course involves a critical examination of enduring writings on education in

    Muslim and non-Muslim civilizations. This exercise is meant to provide aninsight into educational thoughts and how society and culture shape educational

    ideas. The thinkers concern over the concept of education, its goals and the

    means of producing the educated man will be among the central focus of thecourse. This course will include the works of Plato,Al-Ghazali, Ibn Al-Arabi, IbnKhaldun, and Dewey

    EDF 6830 Comparative Issues in Islamic Education (3 credit hours)

    This course introduces a cross-cultural perspective on the integration and

    synthesis of the concepts, principles, trends, and pertinent issues in education andschooling especially in Muslim countries. Emphasis on the Islamic paradigm as a

    This course involves an analysis of the relationships existing between educationand its social context. Past, present, and future purposes and practices of

    education and schooling, together with emphasis on educational institutions in

    Muslim societies will be discussed.

    EDC 6610 Instructional Design and Theory for Instruction (3 credit hours)

    This course introduces students to an overview of instructional designdevelopment and relates it with developments in instructional technology. It then

    focuses on the five domains of instructional design and examines each domain

    critically. Theoretical bases from other disciplines as well as major learning

    theories will also be discussed, with special emphasis on instructional strategies,

    the formulation of instructional objectives and assessment of learning.

    EDC 6620 Instructional Technology Development and (3 credit hours)

    Utilization

    In this course, five areas of instructional technology development/ utilization willbe examined in detail namely print technologies, audiovisual technologies,

    computer-based technologies, integrated technologies and process-based

    technologies. While the primary focus of the course is on the use of technology in

    school settings, the course will also be relevant to persons involved in training and

    adult education. The intent of the course is to provide a general understanding ofinstructional theory and media, and enable educators and trainers to make more

    rationale choices regarding technology. Not only will key characteristics of

    different media be surveyed, but the principles and issues concerning theirappropriate use will also be discussed.

    EDC 6630 Communication and Innovation Theory in (3 credit hours)

    Instructional Technology

    This course reviews communication and innovation theory as it relates to

    instructional technology. It covers the nature of communication problems from

    western and Islamic perspective, communication variables discussed in researchliterature, functions of communications, elements of innovation and the

    instructional technologists role in applying both communication and innovation

    theory. The course emphasizes practice of communication skills that will berequired in instructional technology positions, especially writing and speaking

    about proposed innovations.

    EDC 6640 Management and Evaluation in Instructional (3 credit hours)

    Technology

    The course examines two main aspects; i.e. management of instructional

    technology and evaluation of instructional technology. The management

    component will cover the areas of project management, resource management,delivery system management and information management. The evaluation

    component includes problem analysis, criterion-referenced measurement,

    formative and summative evaluation.

    EDC 6650 Design and Implementation of Educational (3 credit hours)

    Software

    This course provides an opportunity for students to learn about design and

    implementation issues related to the creation of software applications foreducation and training purposes. It is hands-on course that requires the

    completion of an educational software project. While the project can take a

    number of forms, it is assumed that most will be multimedia and/or web-based.

    EDC 6110 Islamic Foundation of Critical and Creative (3 credit hours)

    Thinking

    Creativity and critical thinking are two important elements emphasized in the

    Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The Islamic legacy hasfurnished brilliant examples of creativity and critical thinking by early Muslim

    intellectuals who laid the foundations of Islamic law and thought. This course

    aims at familiarizing students with the Islamic foundation of thinking and to

    motivate them to be creative and critical thinkers.

    EDC 6120 Human Cognition (3 credit hours)

    The course is geared towards understanding the human mind. Its domain includequestions concerning how people perceive the world, acquire and remember

    information, use knowledge, understand language, learn psychology, as well as

    from other cognitive sciences.

    EDC 6130 Critical and Creative Thinking Skills (3 credit hours)

    The course discusses the foundations of critical and creative thinking. To be ableto acquire the critical and creative thinking skills, there would be a need to initiate

    a variety of mental processes, and also to exhibit certain abilities and dispositionson the part of the person. These basic elements would be the foundations tocritical and creative thinking. Such thinking is to be appreciated as a necessity to

    ensure the effectiveness of problem solving, decision-making and judgments

    specifically, and to ensure that the role of ubudiyyah (servanthood) and khilafah

    (vicegerency) is done well.

    EDC 6140 Methodology of Teaching Thinking Skills (3 credit hours)

    This course will discuss the various approaches and methods of teaching of

    thinking as required by different educational systems/curriculum designs, andhow these are operationalized in the classroom lesson plans. Also this course will

    focus on identifying and developing teaching materials that enhance the teachingof thinking and also the techniques to evaluate the acquisition of thinking skills.

    Finally, in an effort to see theory translate into practice, microteaching will also

    EDF 5391 Introduction to Education (4 credit hours)

    This survey course introduces students to the foundations of education, namely

    the philosophical, sociological, historical and psychological foundations ofeducation. The foundations will emphasize the Islamic Perspective.

    EDC 5392 Principles of Teaching (3 credit hours)

    This course will provide an overview of issues in teaching and learning while

    providing much insight into learning how to teach for the beginning teacher. The

    concept of the effective teacher would be discussed and various instructionalstrategies would be given emphasis. Students would also be guided on the

    principles of classroom management on handling discipline, motivating studentsand on assessment and evaluation.

    EDC 5393 Practice of Teaching (2 credit hours)

    This course aims to develop the skills of teaching. Students will be guided in and

    sensitized to instructional practices in schools. The focus will be on thepractical/practicum aspect of the course in terms of mentoring.
