LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

2 Te Awamutu Courier Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Plans impressI would like to thank the Waipa

District Council for their recentinformation evening about plansfor the new Te Awamutu library. Itpromises to be an inspiring, highlyfunctional and well-integrated fa-cility which will serve our districtfor decades to come.

A point was raised about theplace libraries have in the future, when an ever increasing amount ofmaterial is available online, and wewere told that the predicted moveaway from physical books hasalready been slower than expected.

However, with the Internet ornot, I believe there will always be aneed for quality public sources ofliterature and knowledge, what-ever the medium.

My young children, who arevery much part of the digitalgeneration, still adore books — andI want the same opportunities to befreely available to everyone in ourcommunity.

Shared local spaces are alsoimportant to nurture communityinteraction – arguably ever moreso, to counter the introspectiveeffect of the Internet and techno-logy — and the new library willundoubtedly encourage that;especially as it combines with thehub of other facilities including theevents centre, playgrounds andpark.

I also appreciate the efforts toincorporate sustainability into thedesign and construction, which canreduce operating costs, improveenvironmental impacts and set apositive example.

My impression was that thecouncillors and their staff areworking very hard to create an-other feature in our town we can beproud of.

FINN OGLE

Meeting attendance disappointsWe are writing to express

our disappointment at the poorattendance at the public con-sultation meeting for the newlibrary at the Council Cham-bers last Tuesday.

With all the discussion inthe Courier over the past weekswe expected larger numbers toattend. Where were the mayorand the chief executive forexample?

We consider the detaileddesign of the building to be illconsidered, with huge areas ofglass externally leaving no in-ternal wall space for art orelectronic digital displays.

The reason given by thearchitect was that this was toprovide an uninterrupted viewto the exterior from inside, andfrom outside in.

Who needs to have a panor-amic view of the surroundingswhen choosing books or read-ing/studying?

If the building is wellenough signed, people outsidedon’t need to be shown theinterior to know its purpose. Also, large areas of glass mustpresent a heat loss problem, even when it is double glazed.

Rainwater collection was be-ing offered as a desirable, butunnecessary, extra when itscost is only quoted as $40k. Theexcuse for not including thisitem was given as that itrequired a 66 year payback.

This is quite ridiculous, whydoes this particular item haveto be singled out for payback?

Do we have to considerother services within the build-

ing to have a payback before wecan include them? $40k is asmall fraction of the total cost.

Council should be lookingfor the opportunity to sup-plement our limited sources ofwater.

Solar power, similarly, isnot being included on groundsof cost, when it should be highon the list of desirables, againon a sum that would be a smallproportion of total costs.

We should be giving anexample to other local authori-ties providing public buildings.

The provision of extra carparking has not been consid-ered sufficiently, the responseto this query that “we shoulduse our bikes” was flippant.

PHILIP WOODSROGER TAYLOR

Commonsense needed over library decisionI was fortunate to be raised

by parents who used financialcommonsense and taught methe principle of managingmoney. Except for a mortgage,my parents bought what theycould afford after saving forwhat they needed.

Now in their 70’s they havenever felt the burden of debt orbeen financially stressed.

I was raised on the motto‘use it up, wear it out, make itdo, or do without’. I would loveto see some of that same finan-cial commonsense used withregards to the library.

The commitment of a newlibrary and museum would ofcourse be a fabulous addition toour community.

However, this commitment

will inevitably become a bur-den and will put financial stresson ratepayers, that I believewill outweigh the benefits.

The principle of ‘save firstand then spend’ applied by theCouncil will be the most benefitto families in our community inthe long run.

Our economy may look ingood health but scratch a littledeeper and poverty is seepinginto the lives of many families.Add to this the likelihood of alooming economic depressionthat could rival the Great De-pression.

Wise counsel I have readabout family finances thatwould benefit every person in-cluding councillors was this:We encourage you to prepare

for adversity by looking to thecondition of your finances.

We urge you to be modest inyour expenditures; disciplineyourselves in your purchasesto avoid debt.

If you have paid your debtsand have a financial reserve, even though it be small, youand your family will feel moresecure and enjoy greater peacein your hearts.

I would like to see council-lors hold off on the decision tocommit to a library for one yearand then re-evaluate it.

Aesthetically pleasingbricks and mortar and luxuriescan not compensate for thefinancial stress on rate payersand renters.

Following their passions

By DASHA KUPRIENKO,WIntec Journalism student

TC180815SP05AWHAREKURA o Nga Purapura o Te Aroha School principal Jade Tapine with students Dianne Te Tuhi andNgawai Aperehama who are attending regular classes at Wintec in Hamilton to experience tertiaryeducation.

Te Awamutu students DianneTe Tuhi and Ngawai Aperehama, both 15, are getting a taste oftertiary education by attendingtwo classes a week at Wintec for 10weeks.

Ngawai is interested in graphicdesign and attends two classes onMondays while Diane has chosen amusic pathway and attendssessions on sound effects andmusic reading on Tuesdays.

The placement came aboutafter a group of students fromtheir school attended a tour to atWintec to learn about study andcareer options. Wharekura o NgaPurapura o Te Aroha School prin-cipal, Jade Tapine then had adiscussion with Wintec which ledto the programme being set up.

Mr Tapine says he encourages

students to find their real passion.“If we have got a student who

wants to be a rocket scientist thenwe will try to find the way to makeit possible,” Mr Tapine says.

Coming from a school with aroll of just 46 students, the girlshad to overcome their fears tofollow their dreams.

Mr Tapine says many TeWharekura students come from awhanau-type learning environ-ment, which is different from thetertiary environment.

“These 10 weeks will show howthey feel about coming and being apart of the tertiary]culture.”

Diane says one of her fears wasinteracting with people at Wintec, but after three weeks she says shehas made friends.

Ngawai says she feels moreindependent being a tertiarystudent. “At school there areteachers that look over your shoul-

der every now and then. A lot ofthe times actually,” she adds.

Wintec visual arts team mana-ger Sam Cunnane says the pro-gramme provides the girls with avaluable insight into tertiary edu-cation and what they can expectafter high school.

“As I see it, the big benefit forthe students is that they get aninside look at what it’s like tostudy in a tertiary institution, andit takes away some of the fear ofgoing to a scary big new place,”says Mr Cunnane.

The girls are buddied up with athird year Wintec student andearn credits towards NCEA level 1for the work they do at Wintec.

Just three weeks into theirtertiary experience programme, the girls say they are alreadynoticing a positive impact on theirschoolwork and are finding thingseasier.

Subsidy cut on cardsGovernment changes to funding of

SuperGold card journeys by elderly bususers is raising concerns of WaikatoRegional Council having to seek fundingfrom other sources if public transportservice levels are to be maintained.

Currently, central Government paysfor all off-peak journeys by SuperGoldcard holders but it has now decided to puta cap on the amount it will fund.

The funding formula has yet to befinalised.

While card user entitlements won’tchange, the decision has raised the pros-pect of the council getting less SuperGoldcard-related revenue than anticipated infuture, meaning potential for othersources of revenue being needed to coverany shortfall.

“It’s too soon to say exactly what theimpact of the changes will be in the

Waikato,” said finance committee chair-woman Jane Hennebry, following a brief-ing on the issue to the committee.

“But the issue is particularly relevantgiven recently released data talking ofsignificant population growth in Waikato, with an increasing proportion of elderlypeople.”

Last financial year there were morethan 420,000 bus boardings by SuperGoldcard holders in the region, with thecouncil receiving reimbursement of morethan $815,000 from the Government.

“Our advice currently is that thefinancial risk to the region of the changeis relatively low.

“But estimates are not insignificantand raise a general concern about how wemight have to replace any revenue we loseas a result of the changes,” Cr Hennebrysaid.

Missed the point completelyRegarding Barbara Terry’s reply

letter to mine, she seems to havecompletely missed the point I made, thus has side-tracked off into a numberof other issues.

I brought to readers’ attention, oneof New Zealand’s double standards.Double standard defined as:

“A system, code, etc. applied un-equally” (Collins Concise English Dic-tionary).

To illustrate this I contrasted twogroups of people.

They are those inmates of ourprisons who are being punished fortheir crime of murdering a fellowhuman being. And, some of theworkers in our health system who arerewarded with monetary payment for

their participation in the killing ofmany human lives by abortion.

The rape issue, I will, puttingemotion aside, respond to.

A scientific study over a 10 yearperiod of 3500 cases of rape treated inhospitals in America’s Minneapolis —St Paul area revealed zero cases ofpregnancy.

In Czechoslovakia, out of 86,000consecutive induced abortions, only 22were done for rape.

English law did not even list rape asa reason for abortion, because of the“difficulty of proving rape”.

Finally, isn’t it a twisted logic thatwould kill an innocent unborn child forthe crime of his or her father.

BARBARA LINTON

Stop bullying nowI was walking about at Pak’n Save just doing

my shopping when I witnessed the most horrificthing — a supposedly mature mother said to herson, who looked around six years of-age: “That’swhy you have no f***ing friends.”

As I walked by, I looked at the lady andpondered what I should do about this situation.

As a 17-year-old, I felt I didn’t have the rightto confront her and tell her that she is bullyingher little boy.

I thought about calling the police, and I evenwent to the extent of taking her number plate, but my mum told me there is no use, the policewould probably not intervene.

If the police are not going to step in then whois going to be there for this little boy? Who isgoing to stand by his side when his own motherwon’t?

National successfor a small club

TC180815SP12AFAMILY AFFAIR: From left, Simon and Hollie Larsen, Xian and Jim Patmore, Gavinand Judd Fuszard, Nikita and Guy Lyons, and Darrell Shaw who all excelledrepresenting Mangapiko at the Nam Wah Pai Kung Fu National Championship inHamilton.

TC180815SP12BMANGAPIKO’S Gavin Fuszard about to break two concrete slabs to claim thenational Nam Wah Pai Kung Fu breaking title.

By COLIN THORSEN

Mangapiko Nam Wah Pai Kung FuClub’s small, quality contingent produceda mighty performance at the nationalchampionships in Hamilton.

The eight-strong team collectivelybrought home six trophies — farexceeding expectations for a club withonly a dozen members.

Club instructor, Gavin Fuszard isecstatic.

“This was an awesome result consider-ing some of our competing members haveonly been training for a few months andare yet to sit their first grading,” he toldthe Courier.

“Mangapiko (NWP) is a family focusedclub. We had two father/daughtercombinations and a father/son combina-tion competing.

“The trophies are a reflection of thequality of our club members. Thosemembers who didn’t manage a trophy onthe day and those who didn’t compete, stillmade a huge contribution to the topquality performance of the club as awhole.”

Fuszard led by example. The third danblack belt won the breaking nationalchampionship, was second in the men’sfirst to third degree black belt free-sparring and third in the broadsword

kata. Darrell Shaw was second in hisbreaking contest, Jim Patmore third inkata 1 and Nikita Lyons third in thewomen’s blue to red belt free-sparring.

Young Hollie Larsen and Xian Patmoreboth performed well and were a credit totheir club.

Fuszard says it was a huge challengefor them to step up to competing, havingonly been training for a few months.

“Hollie was sparring kids significantlybigger and more experienced than her,but it didn’t seem to faze her as she stoodher ground.

“Xian also relished the challenge ofsparring in an age level to get moreexperience.”

The national competition is held annu-ally in different regions.

More than 70 competitors travelled toHamilton for this year’s event, from as farafield as Invercargill and Northland.

Mangapiko NWP Club has been operat-ing since 2010 and currently has 12students.

Hamilton and Mangapiko clubs helpeach other out, with the respectivestudents often training together.

Trainings take place at the MangapikoHall on Monday and Wednesday nightsfrom 6pm to 7.30pm.

New members are welcome, with thefirst two visits complimentary.

Siblings lift world rankingsBy COLIN THORSEN

A_TC111214CA01BSNOWBOARDERS Dakota and Flet-cher Craig.

TC180815SP13BHIGH FLYING Dakota Craig to represent New Zealand in Audi Quattro WinterGames.

Te Awamutu snowboarders Dakotaand Fletcher Craig are benefiting fromliving in Wanaka for easy access train-ing and competing.

The siblings will, no doubt, see theirworld rankings increase after achievingexcellent results in the Continental Cup,which attracted an international field ofriders.

The cup was an FIS event whichoffers riders the opportunity to earnpoints towards an International WorldRanking.

Fletcher was fourth in slope andmade the podium placing third in halfpipe.

His third placing was all the moremeritorious considering the 14-year-oldwas competing in an open age eventagainst snowboarders much older thanhim from a range of countries.

“I’m stoked to place so highly in my

very first FIS event,” he told the Courier.Dakota competed in slopestyle,

finishing fourth, as well as placingfourth in half pipe, her preferred discip-line, against riders from Australia,Finland and USA.

“While disappointed not to havemade the podium, I am happy that I putdown and landed a clean run,” saysDakota.

As a result of their Cup perform-ances, Dakota and Fletcher have bothqualified to compete for New Zealand atthis month’s Audi Quattro WinterGames.

Unfortunately for Fletcher, he is ayear too young to compete at the Games, only being 14 and the cut off age is 15. Hesays he would have liked to compete atthis level for the experience but his timewill come.

Dakota is ‘incredibly stoked’ to beinvited.

“I will get to compete against some of

the world’s top female half pipe competi-tors, including an Olympic gold medal-list.

“This is a huge experience for me tocompete at this level. It offers me theopportunity to work on new skills andput down competition runs against afield of very experienced riders from allover the world.”

She is working hard to improveahead of the Games, spending up to fivehours a day practising on the slopes atCardrona.

Internationally regarded as one of theworld’s top five snow sports events, thefourth Audi Quattro New Zealand Win-ter Games take place in the SouthernAlps from August 21-30.

The Games attract the world’s elitewinter sports athletes including mul-tiple Winter Olympic, Paralympic and XGames medallists and world championsin freestyle skiing, snowboarding, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing andcurling.

The Craigs would like to thank theirsponsors, Cornerstone Trust, K2 andRide snowboards, Smith Optics,Groovstar Outerware and Profit Gym TeAwamutu for their support.
