Brass Tuition at Fulbourn Primary
Dear Parents and Carers,
My name is Michael Dawson. I first started learning to play brass instruments at Fulbourn Primary School, at the age of eight, taught by Mrs Margaret Douglas. Since then, I have gone on to enjoy a very successful career in music, playing with many of the country's leading professional orchestras, and have played around the world. Alongside this, I have also enjoyed my career in music education.
I have delivered a brass instrument demonstration for some of the pupils at the school. I gave them a crash course on how to get a sound out of the instrument and played the different brass instruments for them, so that they could get a feel with what they sound like.
If your child has expressed interest in learning one of these instruments, but you do not have access, I have a limited number of rental instruments available. You could also rent a beginner cornet from Woodwind and Reed, Cambridge, for £10 a month, with these payments going towards the cost of the instrument, should you wish to purchase it for your child in the future. The school is also able to offer instruments to borrow or hire according to need – please do contact the school office if you would like to enquire about these. Below is a typical breakdown of the costs of learning a brass instrument.
Breakdown Details Cost
Individual lesson 20 minutes £11.00
Instrument hire Cornet £10 a month
Music Purchase Team Brass + Ton of Tune £16 one off purchase
Total per term 11 lessons + hire £161.00
If you are interested in your child receiving brass lessons at school, then please fill in the section below or forward this information to the school office via email and we can organise a trial lesson where your child can try both the trombone and cornet before making a commitment.
Yours faithfully,
Michael Dawson
Please fill in this section and return to the school office
I am interested in my child learning a brass instrument:

Dear Parent / Guardian We are pleased to announce that Fulbourn Primary School PTfA has organised a clothes & shoe collection with Bag2School in order to raise funds and encourage textile recycling. Bag2School is the UK’s leading textile recycler and fundraiser working with schools and since its inception in 2001 it has now paid out over £36 million. As well as raising vitally needed funds for the school, it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfill. A recent DEFRA report has shown that textile collection schemes are helping to reduce the volume of textiles discarded as municipal solid waste. However it is a fact that as a nation we still send 350,000 tonnes of textiles to landfill every year. By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided – this can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, handbags and soft toys. Please note that school uniform (with or without logo) and bedding will not be collected. (Please refer to http://uk.bag2school.com/ for full details). In addition to raising much needed funds it will also raise awareness amongst the children of the benefits of recycling and reuse. If you fill the donation bag and still have more then you can use any other bag to donate your items and don’t forget to ask grandparents, friends and neighbours to have a sort out as well! Empty bags will be sent home in book bags after the October half term and donated items will then be collected from school at 9am on 21st November. Further information about where to leave your bag (or bags) will be sent closer to the time. Many thanks indeed for helping us with this unique fundraising opportunity. Yours faithfully The PTfA

Wilbraham River Protection Society
Talk:Wilbraham River in the context of the Cam Valley by Stephen Tomkins Thursday 14 November, 7.30pm, in The Memorial Hall, Angle End, Great Wilbraham. Free.
This important talk will relate to The River Cam Manifesto (see above) but centre on the Wilbraham River in the context of the wider Cam Valley. The Wilbraham River (which feeds the mill race at Anglesey Abbey) is fed from springs in Fulbourn (Poor Well and the Nature Reserve) and from Great Wilbraham (The Temple), so the poor health of these water courses is of considerable concern, particularly for the flora and fauna and biodiversity. The current water augmentation that occurs at both Fulbourn and Wilbraham is not considered to be a long-term or effective answer. Chalk streams are a rare and threatened ecosystem. Do come to learn more about our important local environment. Stephen Tomkins is the Chair of the Cam Valley Forum and an expert in many areas of wildlife. He is Emeritus Fellow of Homerton College, and formerly Director of Studies for Biological Sciences and Head of the Science Faculty at Homerton.
Fulbourn's Repair Cafe
Saturday 9 November, 2.00pm to 5.00pm, in the Townley Hall, Fulbourn Centre What to do with stuff that's broken or doesn't work any more? Bring it along to the Repair Cafe and a skilled volunteer will try to help you fix it. This will be Fulbourn's sixth Repair Cafe, again run by Fulbourn Forum for community action. Booking will open in October when further details will be sent. If you have something to mend, please make a note of the Cafe date in your diary.
