“A Doctor’s Confession to Geauga County”And Why I Still Do What I Do ...

photo ... You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “I know you. You’re Dr. Roediger. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, perhaps I should tell you a little more about the photo. Let’s start with me, the guy at the bottom of the photo.

I know what it’s like to live with constant pain. As a sophomore on the University of New Hampshire football team, I developed sciatica; an excruciating condition that caused sharp pain in my leg and lower back. I was unable to play football anymore and the pain was so bad that at times it was difficult for me to even walk or concentrate. I was told surgery was the only option to alleviate the condition, but even after undergoing surgery, the pain persisted.

On the advice of a friend, I decided to see a chiropractor. After the initial examination, the chiropractor was able to determine that I had several bones out of alignment in my spine, and that they were putting pressure on the nerves in my back. The situation was serious, but after a few treatments I noticed the pain had decreased and I felt better overall. Over time the chiropractic treatments allowed my body to heal itself naturally!

My confession is … I’ve never healed anyone of anything! I found the body does all of the healing. What I do is perform a gentle spinal treatment to alleviate nerve pressure without any ‘twisting’ or ‘popping’, and the body responds by healing itself. It’s as simple as that! I have

helped thousands of people with a variety of health problems.

It’s strange how life is. Now people come to see me with their low back and sciatic problems. They also

come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, s h o u l d e r / a r m pain, numbness in limbs, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, sports injuries, just to name a few.

My wife, Sharon, suffered for years with m i g r a i n e headaches. She took ibuprofen everyday. We found her migraines were

from misaligned vertebrae in her neck, we adjusted them, now she rarely has migraines.

of July, was the birth of the Disney Cruise Line. In July 1998, the Disney Magic made its transatlantic crossing to Port Canaveral, its new home and where it was scheduled to be christened on July 25. Somehow I, with my very lucky family, was invited to

participate in what was called the VIP Christening Cruise. It was one of the most exciting and spectacular events of our lives.

The Magic had two 2-day cruises scheduled, one with travel agents and one with the press, followed by the exciting christening on the pier and one 2-day cruise following the christening with a handful of travel agents (we were part of the handful), a lot of press, the WDW board of directors, many designers of the ship, many celebrities like Sidney Poitier, George Lucas, Denise Austin, Drew Carey, Michael Eisner, Roy and Patty Disney, Mickey and Minnie Mouse and all of the other characters and stars. back. It was meant to give us just a taste of how wonderful it would be.

The inaugural christening itself was done the way Disney does things … spectacular, in true Disney style! The ship was designed to replicate the luxury ocean liners of the 1930s, something Walt and Lillian would have cruised on. The Magic pulled up to the dock, and Disney cast members, dressed with hats and outfits reminiscent of that same time period, performed and danced before the crowds. It looked as though the complete Navy was there in their whites, standing next to Captain Tom. Live music, vintage automobiles, kites, doves, power boats and fireworks in the sky entertained us. The Disney Magic horn sounded the tune of “When You Wish Upon a Star.” One of Walt’s dreams unveiled before our very eyes. The whole Broadway production reminded me a little of the old 1942 Jimmy Cagney Broadway musical, “Yankee Doodle Dandy/Give My Regards to Broadway.”

Disney Chairman and CEO, Michael Eisner and his lovely wife, Jane, drove up in one of the vintage

A two-room suite is also available. All guest rooms are individually designed with distinct carpet, wallpaper, drapes, framed art and handcrafted Amish cherry or oak furniture. Once people visit, they do not want to leave.

“Someone from Florida stayed here 40 consecutive days this summer,” Gordon marvels.

No problem. It is impossible to overstay your welcome at Red Maple Inn.

“We have a great staff that recognizes our focus is to take away our guests’ stress,” Gordon says. “People get relaxed here quickly.

”For many guests, the calming effect begins during the scenic drive to the country getaway. Guests enjoy navigating through the rolling hills and past farms, orchards, roadside markets and local shops.

“People tell me that when they’re within close radius of our country inn, they feel like they could be anywhere,” Gordon says. “One guest driving from Mentor pretended, at the halfway mark, to be farther away. People can do that because it’s so different out here. We may be a short drive from Cleveland and Akron, but everything east of here is Amish.”

Every stay includes a hearty Amish-style breakfast buffet in the first-floor dining room.

Located off Burton’s town square and next to the historic Century Village Museum, the two-story inn sits on a private wooded lot. Running $99-$159 a night, each of the Red Maple Inn’s 17 spacious rooms is

remarkable,” adds Gina Holk, the inn’s manager. “He’s put eyeglass cleaning wipes in every room and an everlasting light in the bathroom. Guests receive complimentary candy and newspapers. He always keeps guests in mind.”

Visitors notice. They praise these details and the inn’s cleanliness when writing entries in guest diaries that are present in all rooms.Every stay includes a hearty Amish-style breakfast buffet in the first-floor dining room. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and wine are served every evening except Sunday.

“It’s a really nice time to talk to other guests,” Gordon observes. “After the day’s activities, people are very relaxed.”

The 1,200-square foot Burton Room and adjacent pation offers ample space for rehersal dinners, small wed-dings, church retreats and business events.

There is a great deal to do in and around Geauga County. Depending on the season, visitors may enjoy hitting the links at seven golf courses, boating, fishing, hiking, skiing or picking apples

or strawberries. The Apple Butter Festival, Maple Syrup Festival and Great Geauga County Fair are big draws. No visit would

be complete without checking out the rich Amish culture, including

restaurants, cheese factories, wood-working facilities, antique shops, flea markets and other quaint stores. A complete list is available at the inn.Those who prefer not

to venture out can exercise in Red Maple Inn’s fitness center, play

ping pong or pool in the game room or browse the gift shop featuring local Amish goods.
