Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Country Day,

It was another exceptional year at Cincinnati Country Day School; the highlights are numerous and speak directly to the depth and breadth of our program. From 36% of the senior class being recognized as the National Merit Scholars to a Lower School student winning a CCM piano competition; or from Middle School students excelling on the national language exams to claiming district titles and individual state championships, it was a tremendous year by all accounts. The momentum at Country Day is palpable and was fueled by the generosity of the many loyal donors whose names are listed on these pages.

Country Day concluded its fiscal year on June 30, 2011, having received $2,165,245 in gifts. Your contributions supported the operating budget, expanded our ability to attract and retain the best and brightest students and teachers, built community, grew our endowment, and helped maintain our beautiful 62 acre campus. Each of these areas is vitally important to sustaining unparalleled educational opportunities for our children.

I want to thank the chairs of the Annual Fund: Steve Schwartz ’80, Chair; Gordon ’85 and Susan Wright, Parent Committee Chairs; and Marsha and John Raushenbush, Grandparent Committee Chairs for their dedication and hard work. Also, John Wildman ’76 is stepping down as the Chair of the Board of Trustee’s Development Committee. His wisdom and leadership will be missed.

I am proud of Country Day’s direction and priorities. There have been many changes in the past decade including a new school building, the retirement of long-time faculty, as well as the addition of new methodologies and programs, such as game-based learning. However, as we evolve, Country Day remains deeply rooted in its core principles. We are dedicated to fueling our students’ intellectual passions and preparing them for the rapidly changing world they will inherit. The bonds between faculty and students will endure as a hallmark of a CCDS education. So, though we continue to grow and innovate, the spirit and community of Country Day remains true.

Thank you for all that you do for Country Day. Your commitment is deeply valued and appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert P. MacraeHead of School

Cincinnati Country Day School is committed to enrolling gifted and creative students regardless of their ability to pay for a CCDS education. Robust scholarship aid is the difference between good schools and great ones and creates a competitive advantage. Country Day is preparing students to lead extraordinary lives and only by assembling a student body of distinction, with unique talents, through the use of tuition aid can this be achieved.

“Cincinnati Country Day has done so much for our children. We wanted to give back to the school by helping it attract the most talented students in Cincinnati and making it possible for them to receive an exceptional education.” This gift was made possible through the generosity of Julie and Noah Fleischmann, the Fleischmann Foundation and their extended family.

In 2010-2011, Country Day established four new funds in support of scholarship or as unrestricted endowment. The generosity of these respective families added more than $1,000,000 to the school’s endowment, which now stands at over $16,000,000. There are 37 individual funds at Country Day, many of which were also supported with additional gifts last year. The endowment is a vital source of revenue and must continue to grow to support faculty resources, tuition aid, and academic and extra-curricular programs of the school.

the ClAss of 1953

The class of 1953 is honored to accept a major gift for its endowment fund from The Ruth A. and William O. Mashburn, Jr. Foundation. This class scholarship fund is the only one of its kind in CCDS history. The Class of ’53 was (and is) a cohesive unit that changed CCDS history by staying together through senior year rather than transferring to an eastern prep school. Thirteen of us look forward to our 60th reunion in 2013.

Ruth & williAm o. mAshbuRn fAmily sCholARship funDThe Mashburn Fund is the first endowed scholarship fund of our new initiative to raise $10,000,000 for tuition aid and is a wonderful family legacy honoring the memory of William O. Mashburn III (“Publius”) of the class of 1953. Bill was a tremendous classmate, friend to all, and a loyal alumnus of Country Day. He helped establish the 1953 Alumni Endowment Fund to support the school’s faculty and knew the impact of a Country Day education, which he championed throughout his life.

The generosity of the Mashburn Foundation and the extended family of Meredith Keating ’83, Chris Mashburn ’87, Natalie Lindholm, Bill Mashburn IV, and Kendall Mashburn has propelled our efforts to strengthen tuition aid endowment, and has enhanced Country Day’s ability to attract the best and brightest students. Their philanthropic spirit is a tremendous gift to the entire community.

“The Mashburn family is honored to be part of this campaign. Our ties with the Cincinnati Country Day community run deep. Our family believes that private education, when coupled with private giving, results in the most rewarding and comprehensive educational experience. We are thrilled to help enrich and provide access to CCDS’s already varied and vibrant community.”

Over the past five years, financial aid has grown from $1,000,000 to $3,400,000 annually. This level of support is necessary to ensure access to Cincinnati Country Day for all students of great promise. Scholarships are not merely a benevolent impulse to embrace students of limited means; they are a strategic investment in bringing to the school a wide range of students of abundant talent and energy. Students who will constitute the next generation of leadership in Ohio, the US and the world. Country Day’s initiative is at the heart of our school and the academic excellence gained from the sharing of ideas in a diverse and talented community. We can’t thank the Mashburn family enough for their generosity.

This unrestricted endowment fund supports the most pressing needs of Country Day. “We wanted to give back to the school and its faculty, that has done so much for us and our family and played such an important role in our family’s development as students and athletes- at such a young and important age. Our school is a tremendous resource for our community, and we feel it is imperative that we support Country Day for our kids and our future.” This gift was made possible through the generosity of Kroger ’40 and Kay Pettengill and Chip ’79 and Lisa ’85 Pettengill. The gift is a testament to the deep commitment of the Pettengill family and creates a lasting legacy at Country Day. ESTABliSh An

williAm b. AnD louise nixon fAmily enDowment funD The Nixon Family Fund was created to honor the memory of William Brown Nixon (1923-2010). After serving in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, William studied electrical engineering while working full time for the Pennsylvania Electric Company. He later married Louise Emerson and soon after, accepted a nuclear research position with Goodyear Atomic Corporation. In the subsequent years, he went on to serve as director and manager of several municipal and rural electric companies. From a young age, Mr. Nixon held a deep interest in history and education and inspired his four children to "think of history as a road map that gives both right and wrong directions" to understand the ramifications of present day decisions. All of his children received both undergraduate and master's degrees in their fields of business and finance, music education, marketing, and mechanical and civil engineering with an additional PhD in environmental engineering. Mr. Nixon's only grandchild, Joshua Nixon, son of Brad and Cindy Nixon, will be in fourth grade at Cincinnati Country Day School. In addition to establishing a fund for unrestricted endowment to honor Mr. Nixon, it was the desire of the entire Nixon family to dedicate Park Gilmore's middle school history classroom in his memory.

Baldur Tangvald ’11 is a young alumnus ready to take on the world. He credits Country Day for providing him with an incredible opportunity. Baldur took full advantage of the benefits of a Country Day education and was one of 20 students in the nation accepted to the prestigious University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts and the Interactive Entertainment program. It is one of the most sought-after programs in the field, and Baldur was awarded an USC Trustee Scholarship. Baldur can also add the Country Day Visual Arts Award, National Merit Scholarship recipient, and the Country Day Award, the school’s highest honor, to his resume. He also served as the student body president and captain of the soccer team. Despite these accolades, Baldur’s closing message to his classmates was quite simple, “People like fun people. It is easy as that. It’s about positivity, energy, and fun. People like to laugh, they like to feel good.”

Baldur, in his own words, remembers being a “weird little kid” who generally acted much older than his biological age. In fact, his teacher pointed out to his parents that

he needed to work on being a kid. From this Baldur learned that “Country Day isn’t just about textbooks.” He explains while advising the underclassmen, “If you’re going to school, minding your business and heading straight home afterward, I urge you to see that you are

missing the point of this all. This place is more wonderful than people initially imagine.”

Country Day prides itself in developing well-rounded individuals. Country Day students are not only some of the brightest in the nation, but they are athletes, musicians,

bAlDuR tAnGvAlD ’11

and artists. Last year, 36% of the senior class received National Merit Scholarship recognition, the JETS team took first place in the state competition and a group of lower school student won a piano competition at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. In

addition, Country Day had three international photography winners, the state champion in the long jump, seven seniors signed letters of intent to play college athletics, a state archery champion, and a student honored with the YMCA Character Award. These are just a few of the many accomplishments of our students. It is clear Country Day prepares students for many facets of life, and Baldur is a shining example.

Whether he is designing video games or participating in a pick-up soccer game, Baldur’s message is poignant, “I measure time here, not in days, but in opportunities…I told myself to remember that every moment I choose not do something is a moment I cannot get back.” Country Day is enriched because of students like Baldur who move on to the next opportunity but leave Country Day a better place.

At Country Day, our students are ready for any world. We create a community that instills a strong sense of self and a demanding curriculum that promotes growth and success while encouraging discovery. To continue this tradition of excellence, we constantly broaden and deepen the Country Day experience. We count on Country Day parents, alumni, grandparents, past parents, faculty, staff, and friends to help us by investing in Country Day.

This year with the efforts of our Annual Fund chair, Stephen Schwartz ’80, and our wonderful volunteers, over 1,000 donors generously gave over $832,000 to our annual giving program. We are grateful for their tireless work to ensure our students have the best Country Day experience possible. Mr. Schwartz summarizes their work best, “CCDS’s success is never a finished project, but is an ongoing work in progress for each new generation of students.”

Annual giving supports a variety of programs, including academics, faculty development, the arts, athletics, college counseling, and technology. These gifts allow Country Day to recruit outstanding faculty and provide them with unique professional development opportunities, to offer a comprehensive curriculum that is both rigorous and wide-ranging, to provide need-based financial assistance for students, and to maintain our campus and facilities to the highest standards. We thank you for making this special investment.

Country Day parents have once again shown their generosity. The School’s commitment to excellence on every front is made possible by the ongoing kindness of our parents. Their generosity helps to insure the continuation of a rigorous academic program, a faculty dedicated to teaching and scholarship, the beautiful campus, and the opportunities for our students to engage in leadership and community service With the leadership of our parent chairs, Gordon ’85 and Susan Wright, (Parents to Maggie ’19 and Jack ’21) our parents raised over $524,000 for the annual giving program.

Gordon and Susan understand the significance a Country Day education has on a child’s life, “We are sure you can see first-hand the impact Country Day has had on your family and children.” The enthusiasm and dedication of our parent body helps ensure Country Day students are provided with the best tools possible to prepare them for college and beyond.

eRikA ARmsteAD ’12At Country Day we believe in exploration, integrity, self-advocacy and service. Take a look at Erika Armstead ’12; she is the epitome of all four. Erika is a senior at Country Day and has great plans for the upcoming school year.

Exploration: Success doesn’t just happen; it’s the product of trying and failing and trying again. That’s when students find what they love. Erika’s parents encouraged her to try the sport of track and field at a young age. She didn’t really have an interest, until her basketball coach in 5th grade pulled her aside and told her, she was fast, really fast, and that she could do well in track. She decided to give it a try and today she is the reigning state of Ohio long jump champion.

Integrity: We show that we are honorable through every single action and these actions earn the trust and respect of others. The relationships Erika developed with her teammates and her competitors prove her integrity. Coach Steve Conner agrees. “Erika enjoys the competition, but also has a respect for the people she is competing against. She has made friends with athletes from other schools forming some pretty incredible relationships. They will encourage each other during the competition, and then hang out and congratulate each other afterward. She wants to see everyone do well.” Erika uses these friends to help push herself to do her best. “Winning is not everything, but doing better is what counts more,” she explains.

Self-advocacy: No one else can do it for us. We take responsibility for finding things out and making it happen. Erika is a dedicated and determined young woman. She knows she is at the beginning of her journey, and Country Day has given her the tools to meet her goals. She aspires to study chemistry in college, and later go to medical school where she plans on becoming a forensic pathologist, all while hopefully jumping at the collegiate level. “Country Day has taught me that time management is a big part of life and not just high school. The AP, honors, and college prep classes have helped prepare me to take on the college course work that I will soon face.” Service: Our community is not just where we are, it’s our city, our state, our country, our world. We are committed to improving it. Erika is certainly no exception to this belief. She enjoys spending time at Mercy Mt. Airy Hospital where she volunteers in the gift shop. Erika also spends time helping with the Breakthrough Cincinnati program, the American Red Cross, and the Bethany House. Erika recalls while volunteering at the Bethany House, how she came to the poignant realization, “these women and children staying in the house don’t have a place to stay or could not afford one.”

Country Day students embrace the idea of exploration, integrity, self-advocacy, and service. Exploration is why we have students who qualify for the state geography bee, a wrestler who wins 20 matches in a season,

and a winner of the National Foundation Award for Vocal Performance. These students explored new things and found activities they enjoyed, and led to great success. Integrity is a key component in our mission; so key that our Lower School will be studying integrity as a character virtue during the 2011-2012 academic year. Self-advocacy is a trait that many of our students inherently possess, however at Country Day, we foster and nurture this attribute until it becomes second nature. Our students take responsibility for their goals and take the leads in working toward meeting them. Service is an integral part of a Country Day education. Our students are often reminded about our community from a school perspective to a global view. Our Upper School students must complete 90 hours of service learning as a requirement for graduation. The Upper and Middle Schools each have a Service Day in the fall where they are placed by advisory at area agencies to work for the day. Each grade in the Lower School adopts a project for the year such as collecting pop tops for the Ronald McDonald House or recycling paper. Country Day students enjoy trying new things, embracing things they love, and turning these passions into success…just ask Erika.

Alumni gifts to the Annual Fund totaled over $131,000 in 2010-11 and provided vital support for today’s students and faculty. Alumni contributions reaffirm the impact of a Country Day education, and how it has touched and shaped each graduate. Support from alumni is a measure of satisfaction and pride in our institution and programs, and we cannot thank you enough for your generosity.

The Class of 2011 (pictured below) chose Cincinnati Country Day as one of its senior service projects. Over a period of several weeks, various seniors spent their lunch and free bells planning and organizing a fundraiser. As a result the class met their goal and graciously donated $500 to Country Day. We are thankful the seniors chose to give back to their school and to support the Country Day community.

Richard O. Schwab ’67, Country Day Middle School Head from 1986-2006, recognizes the importance of attitude and how it affects all you do in school and in life. He is a man that has devoted himself to Country Day, serving as the Head of the Middle School for 20 years (1986-2006). He was beloved by his faculty and students and is greatly admired for his keen understanding of the adolescent mind.

Even after his retirement, Dick continues to serve Country Day. Each year in the spring, the Middle School faculty and staff award the Richard O. Schwab ’67 Middle School Awards. They are among the Middle School’s highest honors. These awards recognize the boy and girl in each grade who exemplify a positive

During the Middle School Awards Assembly, students receive the The Richard O. Schwab Middle School Award. The Award is one of the Middle School’s highest honors. It recognizes the boy and girl in each grade who exemplify the following qualities: positive attitude, dedication to school work and school activities, leadership, respect for others, and kindness to everyone. Faculty member Lois Rust presented the awards on behalf of Mr. Schwab. 2011 winners: 5th Grade - Sachi Bhati, John Blang 6th Grade - Grace Pettengill, Adam Ushpol 7th Grade - Davis McMaster, Emma Robitaille 8th Grade - Will Cohen, Danielle Wolf

attitude, dedication to school work and school activities, leadership, respect for others, and kindness to everyone.

Dick makes a leadership gift to Country Day’s annual fund to honor the student recipients. However, his dedication goes far beyond his monetary kindness. In a thank you letter to Dick, Ben Stegman, a 2010 recipient writes, “Our school is unique, because teachers have a lot of freedom to teach what they think is important. The students try hard to keep up with the standards, and I know we all appreciate your gift.” It is clear the values exemplified in the award shine through this student. In this one statement, Ben confirms exactly what Dick strived for Country Day, that our teachers teach what is important and that our students work hard learning about leadership, respect and kindness.

2011diStinguiShedalumnuS

As Head of the Middle School, Dick focused on creating a climate where respect, cooperation, and collaboration are key. He believes a division head sets that environment and he worked hard during his tenure to nurture such a culture. Dick enjoyed watching the students grow and develop. Students would often stop in to visit Humphrey and Webster, Dick’s beloved dogs. The dogs provided a great way for Dick to connect and get to know his students.

Dick also had a special knack in finding the right teacher to fit the Middle School atmosphere. Theresa Hirschauer, the current Interim Head of the Middle School and a former faculty member of Dick’s explains, “He had this great talent for finding a teacher’s passion. He often looked past their degrees and more at the human interest side of a person. When introducing new faculty members to the community, he never recited the new faculty member’s resume, but instead shared an interesting story or fact about the teacher.” Dick constantly encouraged his faculty to seek professional development and growth. He led by collaboration and realized quickly that if you have a good idea, other people will own the idea.

Dick is the 2011 Distinguished Alumnus. It is a fitting way to recognize an outstanding member of our community who continues to teach future generations of Country Day students valuable lessons.

We owe much of this success to the grandparent’s committee under the leadership of the chairs, John and Marcia Raushenbush. John and Marcia believe there is no better investment than a Country Day education, “Little is more important to us than the superior education our grandchildren, and yours, receive at Cincinnati Country Day.”

The committee’s tremendous dedication, work and sheer love of Country Day, is made evident both in their appeals and the rewards their appeals have reaped. the pomeranz FamilyFor the first time in 25 years a Pomeranz will not be attending Cincinnati Country Day School. The youngest of the six Pomeranz children, Cody, graduated in June of 2011 ending this chapter in their lives, but certainly not their connection with Country Day.

Penny Pomeranz, mother of six CCDS alumni, explains she grew up in Indian Hill and had heard great things about the school. In the fall of 1985 she and her husband, Dr. Stephen Pomeranz, enrolled their oldest daughter Christy in the Montessori program. Penny admits, “we originally put Christy in Country Day for preschool with the intentions of eventually sending our kids through the public school system. However, there is something about that Lower School hallway that creates a feeling of community, and we just never left.”

All six of the Pomeranz children are Country Day lifers, and all six of the kids couldn’t be more different. “All of our kids learned differently,” Penny comments, “Country Day grew their strengths and challenged them. Country Day fit all of our kids like a comfortable sweater but in a different way and style.”

The Pomeranz children have definitely made their way in the world. Christy ’00 graduated from Columbia University and earned a medical degree from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. She is completing a year of internal medicine in New York before she begins her radiology residency at Cornell in 2012. Corbin ’03 graduated with a degree in Psychology from Kenyon College. After graduation he spent time working with troubled boys at “E-Toh-Nee”, a youth collaboration program in the mountains of northern New Hampshire. He lived in subzero conditions in a self-built structure, burning wood for heat, while rehabilitating teenaged boys. Currently, he is applying to medical school. Taylor ’04 graduated from Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science with a degree in industrial engineering where

she also spent some of her free time as Willie the Wildcat, the Northwestern mascot. Today, she works for Northwestern Hospital and is considering a career in medicine. Jory ’06 graduated from Northwestern’s School of Communications as a film major. He is fluent in Spanish and has studied and worked in Buenos Aires, Guatemala and Seville. He worked for NBC sports in New York City and is currently a freelance writer. Kellen ’07, also a Northwestern graduate, received her degree from the Bienen School of Music in music technology. She is in New York City pursuing a career in music production and has written sold, sang, and produced several songs. Cody ’11 is a freshman at Yale University where he hopes to pursue a degree in history, political science or psychology.

When asked how the Pomeranz family plans to stay connected to Country Day now that they have transitioned from parents to parents of alumni, Penny responded simply, yet poignantly, “our children made life-long friends at CCDS and stay in touch with their former teachers. They have such an admiration for the faculty, and we will always be involved.”

There are nearly 100 Country Day faculty who have dedicated their careers to making sure Country Day students receive the best education possible. All of our teachers and collaborative teachers have degrees, while 73 percent of our Upper School faculty holds advanced degrees. More importantly, the Country Day faculty connects with their students. They are the personification of the CCDS mission; they inspire a passion for learning and independent thinking through

a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, personal integrity, and service to others.

Penny comments even at a young age, the faculty knew how to make every child feel special. She recalls the December that Kellen was born. Christy was in first grade at the time and informed Penny that she must attend the school pageant because Christy was going to be the angel. Penny, who had given birth a few days earlier made her way to the program where she proudly told the gentleman in the seat next to her that her daughter was going to be the angel in the play. To Penny’s surprise when the curtain opened, nearly the entire first grade class was dressed as angels. Even though most first graders were angels in the play, the faculty made each one of them feel special. The children knew every role was important.

“Service to others,” is an aspect of the CCDS mission that is reinforced at Country Day. “The Country Day community gives back to others in a myriad of ways,” explains Penny. For ten years Penny has co-chaired the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund’s Pink Ribbon Luncheon. Ten girls from the Country Day eighth grade class have served as hostesses greeting guests at the luncheon.

You never know when you might run into another member of the Country Day community. Penny remembers when a few Country Day students, volunteering at the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund’s Queen City Classic Chess Tournament, were delighted to see Vondale Batchelor, a member of CCDS’s facilities team, singing the national anthem to open the event. It was inspiring and fun for these students to see a member of the CCDS community giving back and serving others.

Penny sums it up nicely, “the faculty teaches kids to delve into new things, they are challenged to question and dig deep. Students are encouraged to speak publicly, serve their communities and are prepared to work and question the world around them.” With the amazing guidance of our faculty and staff, Country Day students are ready for any world.

Herbert M. Davison is a central figure in the history of Cincinnati Country Day School. As a beloved teacher (1930-1939) and as the School’s fifth Headmaster (1948-1969), Mr. Davison earned the respect and affection of students and faculty alike. Cincinnati Country Day School is proud to honor this great teacher, leader, and friend of our community through the Herbert M. Davison Society honoring individuals who make an estate gift to CCDS through bequests, trusts, or annuities.

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to members of the Society for their commitment to Cincinnati Country Day School and for carrying on the legacy of Herb Davison. These donors have named CCDS as the ultimate beneficiary of a planned gift. Most importantly, their contributions will ensure that Country Day’s success and traditions will continue for future generations.

countrydateThis year’s theme, Rock the Date, could not have been a better description for the evening. The annual auction, chaired by Tricia Knowles ’98, Tracy Ramirez ’88, and Lori Smith, was an astounding success raising over $171,000 for Country Day. Over 300 guests enjoyed a dinner catered by La Petite Pierre, a live auction with local auctioneer, Susan Johnson, a super silent auction and an after party featuring disc jockey “Hey Mr. D.J.” The online auction, which began earlier in the week, featured an amazing selection of items, from a child’s birthday party at the fire house to four tickets to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Many volunteers spent countless hours to ensure this year’s event was a smashing success. CountryDate 2011 truly did Rock the Date.
