Opening doors for biology students into engineeringThe Bioengineering Summer Institute provides high school students who excel in biology a new way to enter the Schulich School of Engineering.

This program allows students to pursue their interest in understanding the human body and developing biomedical devices

— and to use it to begin a career in engineering.

Students admitted to engineering through the biology-based admission route (see admission requirements on page 14) will take part in the Bioengineering Summer Institute's four-week program, which is specifically designed to inspire engineering enthusiasts. It connects each student’s strength in biology with biomedical engineering applications. Through interactive and project-based learning, students will be prepared with the necessary physics knowledge to succeed in engineering.

admission information Dual credit studentsDual credit students applying for admission to a degree program will be considered high school applicants if they haven't completed more than 30 units (10+ courses) at a post-secondary institution. They will be considered transfer students if they have completed more than 30 units (10+ courses).

Transfer studentsStudents who have attended an accredited/recognized post-secondary institution and have completed 12 or more units (4+ courses) will be considered for admission based on their post-secondary academic standing. Some programs may require students to complete, or be in the process of completing, specific course requirements at the high school and/or post-secondary level.

Learn more at ucalgary.ca/pubs/calendar/current/a-5-3.

Indigenous students Students who self-identify as Indigenous on their application

form will automatically receive consideration, first under the regular competitive admission process, and then under the Indigenous admissions process, if needed. If granted admission under the Indigenous process, students will be asked to submit documentation to verify their Indigenous ancestry before registering for classes.

Indigenous students who are missing requirements for their desired program, or would like additional support with transitioning to university, may be able to join the Indigenous Student Access Program (ISAP). Designed to help students prepare to enter a faculty-based program, ISAP consists of university classes, advising, cultural support, peer support and tutorials. This full-time program qualifies for student loans and other sources of funding.

English language requirementsThere are three ways to meet our English language entrance

requirements: high school studies, English language test scores, and the Academic Communications Certificate (ACC).

1. High school studies: To meet the English language requirements with high school studies, students must have completed three years of study with English as the primary language of instruction at an accredited high school.

2. English language test scores: If a student's high school education does not fulfil UCalgary's English language requirements, they can present one of the minimum scores listed in the table below.

Our school code for the TOEFL exam is 0813, and the department code is 00.

3. Academic Communication Certificate (ACC): The ACC is for English learners who want to enter a university program. If a student applies for undergraduate admission and completes the ACC by the end of summer term in the year of application, they could be considered for conditional admission to a degree program.

The University of Calgary acknowledges the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprising the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai First Nations), as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Wesley First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III. UCalgary is situated on land adjacent to where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh’kins’tsis,” which we now call the City of Calgary.
