Goals for 2015-16: 1. Demonstrate median Student Growth

2. Implement PBIS Tier 2 interventions 3. Maintain high functioning PLC’s at each grade

level. 4. Increase interventions efforts and

opportunities for students at all grade levels. 5. Reduce number of Office Discipline Referrals

by 25% from Fall 15 to Spring 16

Professional Development: Professional Development for the 15-16 school year will include staff understanding, implementation and use of the new STAR assessments in Reading and Math. Time will be spent analyzing results and determining which reports are most helpful for the building to keep track of student progress. In addition, grades 3-5 be implementing Achieve 3000 as a pilot to provide more structure in Reading/Language Arts which will require extensive professional development for successful implementation.

School Programs: Harry Spence is a neighborhood school that reflects typical families of the La Crosse community. Our parent group, Harry Spence PTO, Inc., is a vital, long-standing organization. They are actively involved in instructional support, as well as the traditional roles of fundraising and volunteerism. Our school has a vast array of programing to support the various needs of our student population. Programs include: Preschool; Cognitive Disabilities program; School-wide Title 1; ELL (English Language Learners); Learning Disabilities program; and an active High Performance Learners program. We also provide a vast array of clubs and activities for students to participate in after school.

Goals: Increase reading and math achievement so that students meet

district and school benchmarks or experience growth of one year or greater.

Continue to implement curriculum based on Common Core State Standards and newly purchased district resources.

Continue to implement and refine system of universal behavior expectations in order to decrease behaviors so that 90% of students will have 0-1 ODRs.

Professional Development: -Staff work with the Instructional Coach in job-embedded ongoing professional development through a variety of avenues from modeling, team teaching, bi-weekly grade level meetings and monthly extended planning opportunities. -Staff members meet weekly as a Professional Learning Community to analyze student results and share best practices. -All staff receive ongoing training and support in assessment and data analysis. -Staff work with the Instructional Coach on various topics of interest and/or needs -Various staff members attend workshops, gold brochure classes and participate in various books studies - Teachers and support staff are continually taking and teaching classes in and beyond the district and then sharing with others in our learning community. -Various staff members attend Wisconsin State Reading Convention -New for the 2015-16 school year, staff members are attending monthly Edcamps that are taught by Spence staff based on interest and need of staff members. -Staff trained in Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Practices (CLRP) during 14-15 school year and are currently leading school-wide staff development for 15-16 school year.

Family, School, and Community Partnerships: -The PTO organizes and/or supports many events throughout the year, beginning with a fall Open House and ending with an old fashioned carnival. They support a variety of school projects, technology, assemblies, artist-in residence program and field trips. -Viterbo University Education students attend class two mornings a week at Spence. They learn about reading instruction in their course work and then work with students and teachers applying this new learning in the classroom. -Students at UW-L work with select students as part of a semester long class project. -UW-L is conducting a research project on implementing video-based modeling for students with autism at Spence. -The YMCA uses the Spence cafeteria and gym to provide a Surround Care program before and after school for working parents. -The La Crosse Police Department provides officers to work in partnership with schools to educate children and prevent future drug and alcohol abuse as well as gang involvement. (G.R.E.A.T. and D.A.R.E.) -La Crosse Parks and Recreation runs several athletic programs at the Spence facility. Volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball and track are offered to children after school. -The Boys and Girls Club of LaCrosse and MATHY Center provides after school tutoring for those students who need help with their homework or a place to go after school. -Spence Elementary is a community meal site during the summer serving free breakfast and lunch (except for summer of 2015 due to construction). -Boy Scouts & Girl Scouts programs utilize Spence for their programming support our Veterans’ Day program. -Nicole Milliren, Clinical Therapist for La Crosse County Human Services works with Spence staff on children’s mental health issues and trauma-informed care. -UW-L Extension provides nutrition lessons to 2nd and 3rd gr. -New for 2015 -Trane Engineers are supporting students interested in STEM – “Trains with Trane” on a Saturday AM.

Guidance/Pupil Services - Focus on celebrating the diversity and gifts of every

student - Several groups running for students in need of

assistance with assorted topics such as anger management, grief/loss, etc…..

Community Involvement/Volunteer Work - Student Council and individual classes organize several

events each year to allow all students the opportunity to do something for the community. These include collections to local shelters, performing at centers for elderly, etc.

Assemblies/School-Wide Efforts

- Buddy Classrooms where older and younger students get together throughout the year on a variety of different projects
