Dear Carson Families,

We are a few weeks into the 2nd Quarter of the school year, and it has been a great start so far! The Carson staff is hard at work teaching, assessing, and examining data within teams to ensure student learning. Our students are engaged in learning during the school day and busy with their activities, athletics or interests after school. I encourage you to continue to support your students while they learn and grow during their time here at Carson.

The Carson Junior High staff works together as a team to provide your student the very best educational experience possible. If you do not have access to the Parent Portal, be sure to get your access code so that you can see your students current grades and have access to all of the information regarding your student.

In this newsletter, you will see that our teaching staff has shared topics of their lessons, instructional objectives and outcomes, and learning activities they have planned. Technology is used in many classrooms as our Math and English classrooms each have computer carts for our students to use daily.

I want to share with you that every Wednesday, our teachers are working together in their grade level PLC groups on how to improve what they do in the classroom. Carson has a quality team of highly trained educators who continue to develop themselves as professionals by constantly looking to see how we can improve our craft.

At the beginning of the school year, Mrs. Thomas and I took the time to meet with all students during their math block. The purpose of these small meetings was to reinforce the importance of their education, but we also highlighted specific areas in the student handbook and had a discussion why those policies are in place. One of the things I always talk with students about is Respect and how important it is to show respect to everyone they interact with. I want them to be proud of their school, but more important, I want them to make you and their families proud.

We appreciate you giving us the opportunity to work with your students for the two years they are with us here at Carson. We are committed to help them in the areas they struggle and promise to challenge them to learn more so that they are prepared for high school when they leave us in 8thgrade. As always, give me a call or just stop in to see me if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Cougar News

Gracias!

Student Store

Student Store is a brand new club to Carson this year! Student store is led by our Special Education MIID class working on their money management and social interaction skills. Student Store sells popular items to students during both lunches. Our club is hoping to launch within November once the rest of our merchandise arrives. We will be selling popular items such as: Propel Water, ICE drinks, Hot Cheeto Puffs, and Flamas Doritos Chips which follow our district nutrition guidelines. The 2019 Carson Close Up Club is set with 7 students

planning to travel to Washington DC on April 28th.

Drama Club

It’s not too late to be involved in Drama Club! We are recruiting more PIRATES for the spring play, “Jolly Roger and the Pirate Queen.” If you are interested in joining, please see Ms. Engle in Room 338. Drama Club will continue to meet in Room 338 every Thursday after school for regular rehearsals from 4-5:30 pm. Feel free to bring a friend!

In addition, Wednesday meetings will be held as well from 4-5:30. Wednesdays are optional as we will be focusing on making costumes, props, and set pieces. Students DO NOT have to be in the play in order to help out on Wednesdays. Everyone is welcome to come and create with us, even parents and guardians!

Play Week will be the first week in April, 2019. Students will need to plan on staying after school for final dress rehearsals and a performance from Monday to Wednesday, as well as be present on Thurs-day evening for the last performance. Extracurricular Activity

What is the Arizona state tax credit for public schools? Arizona law provides a tax credit for contributions to public schools to support extracurricular activities or character education. Beginning in 2015, additional support areas include:

• standardized testing fees for college credit or readiness, such as PSAT, SAT, ACT, AP and IB tests

• career and technical education industry certification assessment

• preparation courses and materials for standardized testing

You can help Mesa students and possibly lower your tax bill by making a donation.

The state tax credit is available to ALL qualifying individual Arizona state taxpayers. You do not need to have a child

enrolled in a school to take advantage of this state tax credit. It is always best to consult a tax adviser to see if you qualify for

the dollar-for-dollar credit. A tax credit is different from a deduction, because you may subtract the whole contribution from your Arizona state tax bill. An individual may contribute as much as $200, and a couple filing jointly may contribute as much as $400 to a public school and receive the money back in the form of a tax credit. How does it work? If you qualify for this state tax credit, you may write a check or use your credit card to make a contribution. When you file your Arizona state taxes, you then subtract the amount of your contribution from what you owe or add the amount to your refund

• If you owe $800 in Arizona state taxes: Make a $400 contribution to a public school, and subtract $400 from your Arizona state taxes. Your tax bill will then be $400.

ART

This month in art we are making our coil pots with clay. After working on Clay we will begin our color theory project. Students will mix all of the colors on the wheel and make a painting using a color scheme of their choice.

ATTENDANCE

Carson is a serious educational institution. Class time is dedicated to teaching and learning, so we try to keep interruptions to the bare minimum. Anytime a student leaves campus, a parent or authorized guardian must sign out through the attendance office. Persons listed on the emergency contact list may sign out students, with parental approval (parent must call in prior) and picture ID. Students will not be called out of class prior to authorized person signing out student at the front office. Anytime a student is called out of class, it creates a disturbance in the learning environment. Please try to pick up your child during passing periods.

Students who arrive late to school MUST check in at the attendance office. Any school missed due to late arrivals can be excused only by: • the parent/guardian calling the school prior to the

student’s arrival • the student bringing in a note with the date,

reason, parent signature and phone number

• the parent/guardian coming into the office to sign in the student

• the student bringing in a note signed from an • appointment (medical, dental, counseling appointments, or court appearance) for the time they were absent.

All other late arrivals will be considered unexcused and will not be excused after the fact.

If a student is more than 10 minutes late, excused or un-excused, the tardy becomes an absence.

Carson AVID classes are working hard to achieve no D’s or F’s in the second quarter. 7th graders are learning the Focus Note Taking process and developing excellent questioning skills in tutorials. 8th graders are writing TRF’s with level 2 and 3 point of confusions. AVID students recently visited the Mesa Arts Center for a National Geographic Live presentation. Ami Vitale spoke to the students on her experiences as a photographer in

the 100 different countries she has travel. The 3rd period, 7th grade AVID class finished the 1st quarter with a class G.P.A of 3.0, highest of the three classes. The 6th period, 8th grade AVID class finished the 1st quarter with a class G.P.A. of 3.3. Congratulations to both classes for all the hard work and dedication.

TIP: Did you know Carson provides a FREE late bus every Tuesday and Thursday at 5pm for students who are already assigned a bus route? This allows students schedule time with any teacher on campus for tutoring, etc.

Schoolwide, we are focusing on taking useable focused notes. We are teaching the following 5 Phases of Focused Note Taking in all of our courses here at Carson Jr High.

CTE

Computer App Development (CB06)- Carson students in the Computer App Development course have spent their time learning how to make working Apps for Android phones/tablets. The skills they have learned are leading up to gaming apps. They are currently learning how to code to make things move when you flick a finger or when up/down and left/right arrows are used. The game PONG, Space Invaders and others will be.

ENGLISH

In 8th grade English Language Arts, students have been working on their Edgar Allen Poe unit. This consists of reading and analyzing several stories by Poe for various literary elements, followed by the students producing their own piece of narrative writing.

In 7th grade English Language Arts, students have been working in conjunction with the Social Studies department’s Industrial Revolution studies by researching and reading about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Students will turn their research into an information essay.

Additionally, Carson’s English Department just completed our first district benchmark, and one takeaway all students would benefit from is reading endurance. We encourage each student to read at least 15 minutes each evening. Often, students may already have some kind of article or reading assigned from class, or students may read a book for their quarterly book projects.

What’s the difference between kids who read more than 30 minutes per day and those who read less than 15 minutes per day? Twelve million. Between kindergarten and twelfth grade, students with an average daily reading time of 30+ minutes are projected to encounter 13.7 million words. At graduation, their peers who averaged less than 15 minutes of reading per day are likely to be exposed to only 1.5 million words. The difference is more than 12 million words. Children in between, who read 15–29 minutes per day, will encounter an average of 5.7 million words—less than half of the high-reading group but nearly four times that of the low-reading group. Encourage your child to complete the daily English Language Arts homework and even read a book aligned with his or her interests!

HEALTH OFFICE

The Health Office will perform scoliosis screening for all 7th grade students during the months of November and December. The screenings will take place during PE classes. More information will be provided closer to the screening dates. The cold and flu season is just around the corner so be sure to encourage your child to wash hands often, cover their cough with their arm, and get proper nutrition, hydration, and rest. If your child has a fever 101 or higher, please keep them home from school until fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medicine or as needed for symptoms.

The Media Center is still collecting Box Tops for Education. Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help earn cash for our school. Each

one is worth 10¢ for our school! Just look for the pink Box Tops on hundreds of products. All you have to do is clip them and send them to

school.

MATHEMATICS The 8th grade Math team is wrapping up “Equations: One, Two, and Multi-Step Equations”. We are also finishing the ever popular “Equations with Variables on Both Sides.” We have completed last year's crowd favorite, “Rewriting Equations.” Students are now beginning on the exciting topic of graphing and writing linear equations Our students continue to work and thrive with the growth mindset mentality, the belief that our mistakes allow us to grow. The 8th grade team encourages students to work hard and correct their mistakes, so they can help themselves grow their brains!

The 7th grade Math team is following in the footsteps of the 8th grade team and providing their students with a growth mindset enriched environment. 7th graders are valiantly working on one and two step equations with rational numbers.

As always, tutoring is available every Tuesday and Thursday from 4-5 p.m. If students take the bus there is a late bus available on Tuesdays and Thursdays to take students home.

The math department would like to remind you that math is the only subject that counts!

PERFORMING ARTS

The Choir, Band, and Orchestra worked very hard this past month to get ready for our fall concerts. Several students took their instruments home to practice and others came in before and after school to practice. This not only ensured a great performance, but is an important part of being in a performing group. Music is different than other classes in that every student’s individual performance has a direct effect on the whole group’s performance. One student playing the wrong note can make everyone sound bad. It’s a combined effort and all the students must worked together to create a great concert performance. We hope you’ll join us as we celebrate all our student’s hard work at our next series of concerts in December.

Orchestra: Did you know that as the Arizona temperatures change, chances are your string

instrument is suffering as well. Instrument care is a must during the dry winter months!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

P.E. has an exciting couple of months ahead of us. We will be doing a weekly mile test from October through December. Some of the units that we are working on are tumbling, volleyball, soccer, dance, badminton, football and track. Please encourage your student to drink lots of water as they tend to forget to do this in the colder months. We appreciate your support as we continue to work on making sure that all our students are staying physically active in P.E.

SCIENCE

7th Grade Science is finishing their mini Classification and Forensic units. We will be starting Deep Space which will include educating students on the relative size of things within our universe and where we are (Earth) within our solar system within the universe.

8th Grade Science is currently in the midst of studying the intriguing unit of Genetics. Our classes have been using a variety of strategies to learn about the basic principles of heredity. In this unit, students use microscopes to learn about cells, extract DNA from strawberries, test our own dominant and recessive traits and create monster babies using a tool called punnett

SCIENCE CONTINUED

squares. After Genetics, 8th Grade Science will move on to a unit called Adaptation. In this upcoming unit we will collaborate with our team, make notes and flipbooks, research online and take part in a bird beak competition to understand how organisms survive their changing environment. Science Fair students have finished brainstorming and choosing their experimental question that they will be testing. They are currently working on their research papers to become experts on their chosen topic. Our Carson Science Fair is scheduled for February 6, 2019.

SOCIAL STUDIES

7th grade Social Studies is working on our American Civil War unit. Students have been working with focused notes, engaging in higher level questioning, and critical reading. They have been comparing the strengths of the Union and Confederacy, breaking down each side’s strategy and progress throughout key battles. The Honors classes have done some work focused on perspective, analyzing events from different viewpoints and taking time to recognize their personal “frames” and how they influence their views and opinions. 8th grade Social Studies has been focused on American Government throughout this second quarter. By using resources from iCivics and “We the People,” students have been able to learn the principles of our government and make connections to current events and how it operates today. We will finish the quarter with our Economics unit, discovering economic principles and reviewing basic financial literacy. The Honors classes will be taking a close look at the Electoral College and will use primary source evidence to determine if they believe it should still be in use today. All 8th grade students will be taking their state Civics test next month. This is a high school graduation requirement, but students should be able to pass now. Please ensure students are studying and reviewing at home- your support is appreciated! All students had the opportunity to practice the ultimate form of democracy: voting. We were able to prepare for the election, reviewing the candidates running for various offices and researching the key issues. Students were then able to vote on November 1, working with volunteers from the County Re-corder’s Office, using real ballots and polling materials.

SPECIAL EDUCATION

The Special Education Department has been keeping quite busy this year! We have added two new teachers to round out our amazing staff. Mr. Cisneros (8th grade Math) and Mrs. Hernandez (7th grade ELA and Math). Carson offers a variety of Special Education programs based on each student’s needs- co-taught ELA and math classes, where there's a general education and special education teacher in the

classroom, resource classes with a small class size, as well as Autism and MIID programs. Speech and language therapy ser-vices occur in the Communication Lab provided by a Speech Language Pathologist. We were just awarded a grant for Social Emotional Learning for our students who have emotional and behavioral needs. In December, our applied programs will be competing in the district wide Special Education Science Fair at Rhodes Junior High. The classes are focusing on problem based learning projects. The MIID class is working on how, as a class, they can effectively feed people in poverty. They will be taking field trips to Feed My Starving Children and United Food Bank and interviewing the program directors as part of collecting data for their problem statement. This is a great experience for students to work on basic steps of the scientific method and service learning opportunities.
