September 2010
Principal’s MessageHello Families and Community Members,We have begun the 2010-2011 school year with an outstanding turnout during Back-to-School Night on August 12th. It was exciting to see everyone and also listen to your questions and ideas for this school year. I want to address some of the questions that came up during the evening first.
Student Achievement: Yes we did see a slip in six of our ten CSAP testing areas. Three of these were related to a misadministration of the test that impacted 74 test scores. What this means is that 74 scores were not counted for the school rating, but we have been able to get those scores for the families. This caused the drop in three areas. Without this, Columbia would have had gains in seven of ten areas. We are still the highest scoring middle school in the Aurora Public Schools and our growth data for our students outpaces the district and the state for a second year in a row.
No Place for Hate: Parents were asking about this program. I explained that we have partnered with the Anti-Defamation League to be designated as a No Place for Hate school at the end of the last school year. This, combined with our PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Excellence) and the district’s new Anti-Bullying campaign will allow us to work directly with students and staff to make Co-lumbia a safer and allow us to develop understandings among students and staff of the 19 different languages and 132 countries represented here at Columbia. This work is beginning and we will be doing activities during a special Tuesday class time designated for developing student understandings around culture, equity, PRIDE and bullying.
Tuesday morning late starts: We do begin our Tuesday morning classes at 8:50 AM so that all staff may have common time for professional development. This is district wide and on Tuesdays for some schools and Wednesdays for others. Information regarding this was communi-cated through mailings and automated phone calls throughout the spring last school year as well as during our summer mailing. There will not be child care provided, and students should not arrive at Columbia prior to 8:30 AM.
Summer Construction: We have the majority of our summer construction projects completed (new heating and air conditioning, new car-pet, new media center circulation desk and new digital building signs). We are in the process of completing an update to our door and video security systems throughout the month of August. I want to personally thank the Columbia community for supporting the Bond election in November of 2008 that allowed this fabulous project to happen. Your support of the school and community is outstanding as always.
I want to ask you to consider volunteering your time during the day whenever possible to help in classrooms, lunch areas, media center, etc. We are always looking for your support! Thank you for making the start of our school year so strong. As always, if you have any questions, please contact us!

Dress Code ReminderDress codes are established to provide modest guidelines for stu¬dent attire in a public school setting with children from diverse back-grounds.
Therefore, if there are any questions on the appropriate nature of a student’s outfit, an administrator will make the final deci-sion.
What is allowed:1. Polo, T-Shirt type shirts or collared shirts, with sleeves, that
appropriately cover the entire upper body, without offensive or vulgar language/graphics/gang symbols/drug or alcohol logos.
2. Pants, skirts, shorts without excessive tears/rips/holes. The length must be longer than a student’s fingertips with arms at sides, even if the student is wearing leggings underneath.
3. Accessories (belts, jewelry, etc.) that are appropriate and do not contain any offensive or vulgar language/graphics/gang symbols/drug or alcohol logos, or dangerous spikes.
4. Appropriate shoes must be worn at all times. 5. Pants should be worn appropriately so that underwear is always
covered.6. PE uniforms must be worn in PE classes.
What is not allowed:1. Hats, bandanas or headgear. (Exemptions and special cir-
cumstances will be handled by the administrative team on a case-by-case basis).
2. Dressing alike or altering personal appearance for the purpose of intimidation, gang-claiming, or disruptive behaviors.
3. Pajamas and slippers.4. Anything else deemed inappropriate by an administrator.
This dress code will be updated as fashions, trends, and need for student safety change.
If dress is not appropriate for school, students will be required by staff to change into more appropriate attire prior to returning to classes or activities. This may include putting on a sweatshirt, wear-ing a Columbia shirt, or contacting parent(s)/guardian(s) to bring acceptable clothing to school. The administrative team will make all final determinations about the appropriateness of clothing.
Students, if you are NOT sure if the clothing you are choosing is acceptable according to the school dress code DO NOT WEAR IT.

Artist’s CornerCherry Creek Arts Festival 2010This summer, our school was chosen to participate in the Janus Art Buying Program at the annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival on July 5th, 2010. Three Columbia students were chosen to attend this art festival in order to purchase $500 worth of art that will soon become part of a permanent installation here in our building! Currently, the artwork that was purchased by Brandon Aquiningoc, Melanie Flynn, and Juwan Harris is being displayed for the month of September inside the boardroom in the APS building ESC-2. Columbia’s art is sharing this space wth the other three APS schools that were also selected to particiate in this fantastic program. Once the artwork returns to Columbia Middle School, it will be presented to students and staff before we find a permanent location in our school building for everyone to enjoy. Please make a point to come and seen our amazing purchases coming soon this fall!
Fall McTeacher Night Last fall, Columbia’s McTeacher Night broke records due to such a tremendous turn-out from our extremely supportive staff, stu-dents, and their families’ attendance at McDonald’s! Please help us break another record this year at our CMS McTeacher Night on Wednesday, October 6th from 5pm-8pm at the McDonald’s on the corner of Buckley & Iliff. A percentage of purchaes that evening go directly to our PTSO who, in turn, help support and fund so many great programs and supplies that directly benefit our students here at Columbia. Our CMS staff will be working hard behind the counter taking orders and serving french fries, please mark your calendars and come for a “Happy Meal” to raise money for our PTSO on Wednesday, October 6th from 5pm-8pm!
Barnes and Noble Bookfair - Save the Date! Our Art Department and Media Center want to extend an invi-tation to our 4th annual “A Night of Art & Literacy” Barnes & Noble Bookfair on the evening of Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 4pm-8pm. During the entire month of November, some of our CMS artists will have works on display at the Barnes & Noble store on Abilene & Alameda. The actual evening of the bookfair we invite all Columbia families to attend this fun event and start your holiday shopping early with us because a % of all purchases made come back to our school! There will be student performances, family art activities and games, and student artwork to view in ad-dition to shopping and enjoying a latte! This CMS event has been very successful in past years thanks to our staff and CMS families and we hope that this year is the same. Please mark your calendars and join us on November 11 from 4pm-8pm.
Music NewsThe Tri-M Honor Society for musicians will begin meeting every 1st and 3rd Friday in September from 3-3:20pm. This is for students that participate in any musical ensemble at Columbia and have good grades. We will be doing a coat drive for our community service project this year. Students should see Mrs. Walsh in the band room if they would like to participate.
Columbia’s Second Annual Knitting Club Set to BeginFor the second year, the Knitting Club will be held every Wednesday in B206 from 3:00-3:45. All knitters and crocheters are welcome to attend. No experience is necessary – we will teach all you need to know to create great projects for yourself and to give as gifts to others. If you already know the basics, come to our club and learn some advanced pattern skills and have fun knitting with your friends. For the first meeting, the only things you need to bring are a set of needles (size 8-12). Practice yarn will be provided, but if you want to complete a personal project, plan to bring the yarn you will need. We also have some looms available for use during the club sessions. Parents and other volunteers are always welcome to come join us after school to share your skills. Also, all donations of extra yarn and knitting crocheting materials are always welcome. Please contact Ms. Tutak, Ms. Wilbanks, or Mrs. Mugatha for more information.
Columbia’s Caring Community Club Starting SoonThere is a new club coming to Columbia Middle School. This club, Columbia’s Caring Community or C3 for short, is set up to provide participants with community service/volunteer projects to help us give back to our community. Our first project will be a school food drive. Other projects will include coat drive, school supply drive, etc. This club is open to anyone at CMS with a desire to help others in our local community. We will meet after school on Thursdays from 3:00-3:45 in D207. No supplies are needed at this time. You only need to bring some enthusiasm and a desire to help others. We hope to see you there! (Contact Ms. Wilbanks, Ms. Tutak, or Mrs. Mugatha with questions.)
