Costumes § Students with blue cards (character parts) should check their cards for specific costume and prop suggestions. American and French high-ranking officers often wore blue military jackets, and British officers often wore red jackets. Many American soldiers simply wore their own clothing – typical colonial attire or even hunting tunics. § Students with green cards (expert words) should have a costume that fits their blue or yellow card role OR which fits their battle scene role. Typical colonial attire would also be appropriate. § Students with yellow cards are members of the Continental Congress and should dress like rich colonial men. Extra team points are awarded for appropriate props and costumes, so every child should have a costume, but costumes do not need to be elaborate. Costumes can usually be pulled together from items already found in the home closet. Here are some ideas: Colonial Men A white dress shirt with a frilly collar or a long strip of white neck cloth tied in the style of the day. Students can pick up an instruction sheet in the classroom which explains how to tie the tie. Pants rolled up or cut just below the knee – White baseball pants and football pants work great. Regular dark-colored pants can be rolled up and tied with a tie to look authentic. Long white socks up to the knee. A black or blue jacket or vest – The jacket can be plain or dressed up with braid if the look of a uniform is desired. Black or navy vests look authentic. Ladies’ jackets tend to fit this age perfectly. Black shoes with aluminum foil silver buckles – Attach the foil buckle to regular shoes with a hair pin. Students can pick up the cardboard/aluminum foil pattern in the classroom. Tri-corn hat – These can be purchased at party/costume stores for about $10. Tunic top – Many militiamen didn’t have uniforms. They simply wore their everyday shirts or tunic-style hunting tops. Powdered wigs – Rich men wore powdered wigs. They can be made with a baseball cap turned backwards and covered with cotton balls. A wig would be especially appropriate for students with yellow card roles. Most students have two roles – a speaking or acting role AND a battle scene role. Choose ONE costume idea (usually the blue/yellow card idea) which best fits your role. There will NOT be time for a costume change in the middle of the play. Girls in skirts CAN wear their skirt costumes during the battle scene.
