Since the characters are young and the film is aimed at a teenage and therefore fashion-conscious audience, the costumes must be attractive to the audience.

However they must also be fairly simple in order for all the attention to be on the narrative.

Logos

Logos have become increasingly important to the youth market. They are also a way to represent the wealth of the characters who, since they have a 2nd home, would be most likely wearing popular brands such as Abercrombie and Fitch, Jack Wills and Hollister.

Here Brittany Snow can be seen wearing a Hollister cardigan in teenage chick flick John Tucker Must Die.

Character Representation

Clothing is key in the representation of the characters’ personalities and help the audience to form opinions of the characters.

This can is particularly evident in teen films and TV shows such as Mean Girls and Glee, which play on social stereotypes.

In the trailer the characters would also need to showcase different outfits in order to show this is a full-length feature film.

It will be set in Autumn/Winter therefore the costume will also need to be suited to the weather in order to add to the verisimilitude.

Costume Planning: Alex

Alex’s character is very sporty as she is a bit of a tomboy. She wears her hair in a ponytail and favours comfort over fashion therefore will wear simple clothes: jeans and a top with converse trainers.

Emily

Emily’s character is much more girly and fashion-conscious which will be reflected through her costume. In the opening scene where she arrives at the house with Alex she will be dressed in a body-con skirt and pink top.

As she is the main character throughout the film and therefore appears in various scenes, it is important that Emily has costume changes. When watching the film in the house she will be dressed casually – in slouch pants and a baggy top.

Later on in the film, as her character develops, she becomes more mature and less girly and innocent. This will be reflected through her clothes which will have a tougher edge as she starts to fight back.

Emily’s Dad

As a detective inspector he will most likely be based in an office and wear a suit. His overall look will be very ordinary and simple.
