ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrive San JoseAfter you touch down in Costa Rica and feel the warm breeze on your skin, take a second to let it set in that this paradise is real and you’re actually here! Your guide will meet your family and transfer you to the hotel to check in, rest up, and prepare for the adventure to come.

Accommodations: Hotel Bougainvillea or similar

Day 2: San Jose to ArenalAfter breakfast, ask your guide any questions you may have about trip expectations or the itinerary. It’s time to head to the lush Central Highlands and the area around Arenal Volcano! When we get there, we’ll take a visit to La Paz Waterfall Gardens to hike the scenic rain forest trails. You’ll encounter gorgeous waterfalls, rivers, and a vast array of tropical wildlife, like birds, butterflies, jaguars, frogs, sloths, snakes, and everybody’s favorite – monkeys!

From there, head to the charming little town of La Fortuna, sitting peacefully among panoramic views of Arenal Volcano. Check into your home for the next two nights and just hang out; tomorrow’s a big day!

Accommodations: Hotel Royal CorinMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Arenal RegionTo start the day, explore Arenal’s Hanging Bridges. You and your family will walk along a two-mile-long series of interconnected trails, joined by eight stationary bridges, a tunnel, and six suspension bridges. The bridges hang over protected primary neo-tropical rain forest, making for quite the ecological experience.

After the Hanging Bridges, you’ll get a whole new experience of the rain forest: ride up to an observation deck in slow-moving Sky Tram gondolas, appreciating the breathtaking views all around. The way back down isn’t quite so tranquil – soar through the treetops and over canyons on a circuit of zip lines for an exhilarating thrill ride your kids won’t stop talking about! Those who’d rather not participate in the zip lining can always opt instead to ride the Sky Tram back down, keeping a lookout for vibrantly colored toucans in the trees.

At the base, stroll through the orchid and butterfly gardens. Some of these beautiful butterflies are as large as your hand! .

Accommodations: Hotel Royal CorinMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Arenal to guanacasteToday we’ll transfer from Arenal to Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast. On the way through lovely landscapes to the seaside town of Guana-caste, you’ll enjoy a peaceful float trip down the Corobici River. As you and your family drift along at a relaxed pace, watch out for the abundant wildlife, like tiny hummingbirds, huge Roseate Spoonbills, howler monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and crocodiles! After the float trip, eat a traditional homemade Costa Rican lunch, with fresh produce, rice and beans, plantains, and your choice of fish, beef, or chicken.

Accommodations: Flamingo Beach ResortMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Why choose Thomson Family Adventures?

Because we know families… we were the first and remain the only company devoted exclusively to family travel. Adult tour companies have imitated us, but we are still – as we were in 1998 – the only one to offer strictly family adventures.

We offer meaningful family experiences like horizon-broadening encounters with local children.

Our Friends Across Borders program has proven to be one of the most memorable components of our adventures for all who choose to participate. Each itinerary includes a unique cultural exchangeexperience ranging from pen pal letters to soccer games. We encourage your children to join in the fun!

Our Guides are all native to the country you are visiting, so you gain real knowledge of local life from the get-go—something a non-local, no matter how scholarly, could never match.

Our rafikis, in addition to our guide travel with almost all of our groups of eight or more. Their job is to engage the kids in fun games and activities to help break the ice among families and make sure everyone’s entertained.

Grandparents and Family Reunions—nothing can bring a family together like a shared travel experience. No matter the age difference—be it a parent and child, grandparent and grandchild or multiple generations—observing how we each see the world is not only re-markable but a sweet reminder that certain things in this world are, and will always be, totally ineffable.

Relax—you’re with Thomson—our expertise in this specialized field is unmatched, and we spend every minute of every day coming up with new ways to make family travel more fun, eye-opening and safe.

Accommodations – We’ve personally visited every ship, hotel, and campsite to be sure they all meet our family travel standards.

Meals – We know hungry kids and fussy eaters can make travel difficult, so our meals and buffets are carefully selected.

Transportation – It’s all taken care of: airport transfers, ground transportation, plenty of snacks on the vehicles, and no overly long drives—because nobody wants to hear, “Are we there yet?!”

Included travel insurance – If the unexpected should arise—no worries, we have you covered.

Guaranteed departures – It’s tough to find time out of your busy schedule; school vacation is when it is, the kids’ summer camp is not going to move to a different week… Once you’ve confirmed a trip that works for your family, we won’t cancel on you.

Let us take care of all the details for you.Parenting is hard work—vacationing doesn’t need to be.

CLIMATE

Costa Rica has two seasons, which in Spanish are known as verano (summer) and invierno (winter). This has nothing to do with summer and winter as we know them in North America. Verano, the dry season, runs from December to April and invierno, the rainy season, runs from May to November.

Still, many tourists expect it will not rain at all for the six “dry” months and then pour buckets all day long, for the six “rainy” months, but this is not true! It can rain in the dry season and be dry in the rainy season, so your best bet is to be prepared for precipitation regardless of the season.

Despite the terminology, there really is no winter period in Costa Rica – in general, it is a very warm, tropical country no matter when you visit or what region you’re in, with temperatures tending to hover around the 80s during the day and 60s or 70s at night.
