ARENAL VOLCANO

Arenál Volcano is an active andesitic strato-volcano in north-western Costa Rica (10.5N, 84.7 W), around 90 km north-west of San José, in the province of Alajuela, can-ton of San Carlos, and district of La Fortuna. It is the most active and youngest volcano in Costa Rica. Re-cognized as a volcano since the 19th century, it was known by foreign investigators as Volcán Costa Rica, Rio frio, Canastos Volcano and Cerro de los Guatusos. Scientists have been able to date it back to more that 4000 years ago. The area remained largely unexplored until 1937 when a documented expedition took place to

reach the summit.

This is a guided tour. The tour starts with a hike

through the jungle in the foothills of the active Arenál

Volcano. There you will have the opportunity to see

many exciting birds, monkeys and other wildlife. The

tour begins at 8 AM with a short 20-minute drive to the

trail head; there you will walk on a rain forest trail up to

a look out point where you will have a spectacular view

of the volcano.
