• Great paper on models

• But role of soil fauna in the process totally overlooked, once again!

• Soil ecologists firmly reacted

State-of-the-art

• Soil ecologists: two rather different ways to explain processes: “food-web vs. self-organization”;

• Soil animals (biodiversity and species traits) play a crucial role in SOM turnover (not sufficiently acknowledged).

• Are soil C models less predictive without them ?;

• Interdisciplinary approaches needed to better understand and model SOM (in agreement with Schmidt et al. 2011)

• Limited communication (linkages) between rather compartmentalized disciplines like biogeochemistry, microbiology and soil ecology;

• Lack of [awareness of] data on soil animals (both field and lab experiments);

• Laboratory vs. field studies conclusions differ (e.g. Lubbers et al. 2013);

• Scales? Spatial and temporal;

Models on soil fauna and SOM interactions?

De Ruiter et al. (1994)

• Biological transformation of SOM, stabilized in organo-mineral complexes (Δ turnover rates)

• Biogeochemical SOM models oversimplify soil community (or reduced to microbial component)

• Soil fauna role in SOM dynamics (soil ecologists) based mostly in food-webs; Who eats who?

ESSEM COST Action ES1406

How to merge the «soil foodweb» model vs. self-organized systems in soils

(«ecosystem engineering») for more comprehensive model of soil functioning ?

Sanders et al. (2014)

What soil fauna does in the C cycle; how

models represent soil fauna? How these 8 insights are improve? (Jones et al. 1994; Decaëns et al. 2008)

• The situation becomes perpetual, until now?.

Meeting in Osijek (Croatia, 5-6 October 2015)

• What Worked Well – Commitment and enthusiasm of attending participants ; – Meeting preparation and hosting institution facilities (Davorka

Hackenberger)

• What Worked less Well – Not all participants could attend, not all WGs could perform their tasks

(last changes in WG responsible, e.g WG4) ; This limits our performance.

• What did not Work? – Which data from European projects (finished and currently ongoing)

can be used for data management ? ;

ESSEM COST Action ES1406

No matter how many papers we are able to produce, a further step to come up with a global synthesis paper. Lead authors and contributors(structure of the paper) to be decided.
