The acute angle and sharp straight edges of the top half of the diamond symbol represent Yokogawa's cutting-edge technology while the gentle

curvature of the bottom half represents the warm-hearted nature of Yokogawa's people. By balancing these two elements, Yokogawa aims to

contribute toward the realization of a thriving global society in much the same way as the sun. This property is reflected in the bright yellow of the diamond.

This year’s Control Readers Choice Awards represent un-precedented levels of both breadth and detail.

The most ambitious effort to date, our 17th annual ef-fort represents the expressed brand preferences of more than 1,000 process automation professionals. Those sur-veyed include the print magazine’s U.S.-centric read-

ership as well as subscribers to our increasingly inter-national digital media outlets anchored at our website, ControlGlobal.com.

And, while the results certainly still reflect a North American bias (more than 90% of respondents hail from the 50 U.S.), the increased participation of industry profes-

Table II. “Best in Control” Readers Choice Awards by Process Automation Discipline and Industry

Our 19th Survey!Control Readers Pick Their Preferences

in More than 100 Process Automation

Technologies.

Welcome to the Annual Control Readers’ Choice Awards, our 19th edition. We’ve surveyed our readers, and we asked them, in a series of unaided (that means no preselected choices in dropdown boxes) surveys for their selections among all the solution providers they regularly work with. As we have for the past several years, we surveyed not only the print magazine’s readers, but also subscrib-ers to our digital media outlets: email newsletters, webinars, pod-casts and all of the other media you can find at ControlGlobal.com. This year’s awards represent the collective opinion of over 1000 automation professionals.

The results still reflect a North Amer-ican bias. However, each year we see more responses from automation pro-fessionals from outside the United States. This has made some clear changes in the standings.

The question isn’t who won,but rather why do they winand how do they do it.

by Keith Larson and Walt Boyes

Welcome to the 20th Annual Control Readers’ Choice Awards. It seems to us to be fascinating that we’ve made it with this award survey for 20 years. We are pleased with the response of readers and vendors, and we know how impor-tant this survey has become because we get the phone calls. We’ve surveyed our readers and we are pleased to present the collective opinion of over 1000 automation professionals on over 100 process automation technologies.

The survey continues to have, as we noted last year, a North American bias, but the number of responses from out-side North America continues to grow. As we have for the past several years, we surveyed not only the print magazine’s readers, but also subscribers to our digital media outlets: email newsletters, webinars, podcasts and all of the other media you can find at ControlGlobal.com.

Why is this survey important? This survey and the resulting Readers’ Choice Awards are the only completely unaided brand preference survey in the process automation industries.

As always, we pulled a random sample of end users from our databases, and we asked them, in a series of unaided (they have to write in the names—no preselected choices in

dropdown boxes) surveys for their selections among all the solution providers they regularly work with.

This means that Control’s staff has to make sure that all the various ways to name an ABB or a Rockwell or an Em-erson product are counted correctly. This is time consum-ing and requires significant knowledge of the history of the industry. Did you know that there are over 17 different ways to list what is now an ABB product, for example? One of the things this indicates is the persistence of original brands in the minds of the end users, even after name-changes, acqui-sitions, and the passage of time.

Since this is a private survey, we have control over the re-sponses, and we take great care to make sure that the survey is reasonable and accurate.

What You’re Going to SeeFor the fourth year, we’ve broken out control platform awards by discipline, and also by industry vertical. Each category represents end-user selections in the six basic process con-trol disciplines (see Table 1: “Overall ‘Best in Control’ Win-ners by Application Type”): Continuous Regulatory Control, Batch Process Automation, Safety/Emergency Shutdown, Sequential Logic, Continuous Sheet/Web Monitoring and

Main Automation Contractor (MAC)

Yokogawa paves way for a new engineering paradigm for the next-generation. It is not uncommon for a project to experience backsliding and significant rework, all of which affects the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Yokogawa's smart engineering and Agile Project Execution model prevents these inefficiencies and ensures our customers reap maximum benefits and cost-savings throughout a plant's lifecycle.

Yokogawa provides highly-qualified and well-resourced control systems specialists to engineer, supply/procure and manage instrumentation, control systems, safety instrumented systems, and associated interfaces for all project components and facilities.

Mandated Compliance MonitoringSince the 1970’s, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been establishing and enforcing environmental protection standards in the United States. An important part of these standards is the mandated monitoring requirements to verify the standards are being met; especially for emissions into the atmosphere. So for many industrial plants, Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS) are a key component of a plant’s compliance responsibilities.

In addition to federal mandates, state and local environmental regulations may exist that cover a number of emissions ranging from the measurement of Highly Reactive Volatile Organic Compounds (HRVOCs) to the monitoring of sulfur emissions. To assist plants in meeting these diverse mandated measurements, Yokogawa Corporation has the expertise to customize analytical measurement solutions for nearly any requirement.

proven reliability The magnitude of the FAST/TOOLS installed base are in critical applications, especially for oil & gas, nuclear, infrastructure and monitoring industry. For more details on the projects, delivered in the 25 years of history, please refer to our FAS/TOOLS Project Reference List. high scalability We have delivered FAST/TOOLS systems in a range from 50 I/O points to more than 1 million I/O points. Field inputs can be easily organized as unique items based on its `Installation’, `Unit’ and `Tag’ name. This allows identical tag names to reside in the same SCADA database, but with different installation areas, and/or unit areas. Each item can be `blocked’ to disable nuisance alarms when the related field equipment is on maintenance, or can be

put `off-scan’ to allow future equipment to be engineered into the SCADA system without actual scanning of the related field signals. true SCADA communication capability FAST/TOOLS has many dedicated PLC/RTU driver protocols developed for data acquisition, to enhance communication performance and reliability. FAST/TOOLS can provide direct communication links to various makes of DCS/PLC/RTU on the same SCADA server. It also has many proven communication interfaces through Fibre Optics, serial lines, radio, satellite, PSTN, etc. Furthermore FAST/TOOLS uses industry (embedded) standards such as OPC, XML, ODBC, SOAP, HTML etc. to connect to 3rd party products. Also industrial field busses are supported.

Technical Advantage

Yokogawa’s FAST/TOOLS SCADA System which is

developed since 1978, is based on the requirements

of oil/gas gathering, transportation and

distribution. There are many advantages of using

Yokogawa SCADA solutions, and we would like to

highlight some of the key advantages as follow.
